Enumerations of Youth

Beginning in 1838, the townships took enumerations of youth between the ages of 4 and 20 years. These can be helpful in placing children with parents or guardians for pre-1850 families and families that do not appear in the Federal Census. Although these have more recently been refered to and labeled as "school records," they were done, probably by township or school district clerks, for the purpose of taxation.

Morley Library in Painesville has a collection of school records as noted here, in the local records section in the Genealogy and Local History Department. Thanks to Lake County Genealogical Society for this list from LakeLines July 1993.
