Language Helps for Cemetery Inscriptions

Although most of the county gravestones are in English, there are areas, especially in Fairport and Painesville in which we find foreign languages. The predominant languages are Finnish and Hungarian. There are many Irish and Italian people in the area, but only a few have used the language on the stones. Evergreen Cemetery is a mix of Hungarian, Finnish and English, with a small smattering of other languages. Fairport Cemetery is in Finnish and English. St. Mary's is Hungarian and English with some Italian and Slovenian. There are a few German stones around the county.

This project has attempted to deal with other than the predominant foreign languages on an individual basis at the reading itself. Therefore, the Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew translations will be found in the reading.

The lists of words and phrases for German, Hungarian and Finnish stones were developed from the stones themselves. There are surely words that were missed, but the most common ones are included. No attempt was made to list the towns, counties, and other places named on the stones.

We thank Mary Sallay, Helen Kasari, and Istvan "Steve" Herczeg for their help in translating and explaining the language conventions used in the inscriptions. Thanks also to Duncan Gardiner for his assistance.
