Sullivan County was organized in 1827 from the northern portion of Cheshire County. It is located in western New Hampshire, along the Vermont border. Sullivan County was named in honor of the Revolutionary War hero General John Sullivan, who was a New Hampshire attorney general and judge.
Newport is the County Seat, although Claremont is its largest city.
Many of its 18th century farms are still in the same family. Primary industries include manufacturing, retail, health care and higher education. Sullivan County is the birthplace of America's machine tool industry. Several historic mill communities are located within Sullivan County.
