Kimbals Castle, a replica of a castle on the Rhine in Germany, was built 1897-1899, in Gilford. The castle was occupied by the Benjamin Kimbal family until 1960. Benjamin Kimbal was a railroad tycoon.

The mills in downtown Laconia. The Belknap Mill, on the left was built in 1823. A canal off the river powered the mill. In 1911 a generator was added which gave them lights so they could run a night shift.

Timetable Mabel, in Tilton, was redicated at a new site near the island, at a public ceremony 15 Aug 1970. The statue originally stood by the old railroad station and held a horse watering trough.

Newspapers

Newspapers have always published the deaths of citizens. However, it wasn't until the Linotype machine was put in use, around 1900, that you had ten-page or better daily newspapers. These new papers, instead of a one sentance anouncement of the death, created a full obituary describing the persons life and the people whom servived him. The Laconia Library has all the Citizen Obits from 1926 on in a card file and has all of the papers from 1950 on microfilm. The Laconia Daily Sun has taken over and the Citizen is no longer in print.
