In 1769, The town hired a school master, Rev. William Parsons, and built two school houses. In 1778, school was voted to be kept at six places: Avery town, near Robert Moultons, at Dr Smiths, Joshua Beans mill, at Nehemiah Lougee and at Peaked Hill. In 1779, Col Samuel Greely's school district was set off.
Gilmanton Theological Seminary was started in 1835, and Rev Herman Rood opened a Dept of Theology. In 1839, a brick building was erected and dedicated August 18, 1841. It ceased to exist about 1844.
The town voted in 1792 to leave the matter of a higher institution of learning to a committee of 20 men. Gilmanton Academy was chartered in 1794. A building was built and the school was started under the instruction of Peter L. Folsom, AB, a graduate from Dartmouth College. All early records kept by Stephen L. Greeley, Esq., were destroyed by a fire Sept 25, 1872. In 1808, the entire Academy was destroyed by fire. The citizens of Gilmanton rebuilt Gilmanton Academy in just four weeks and four days.
