Register of Deeds

The Register of Deeds can provide a surprising amount of information about landholders. If your ancestor owned land in Pembina County the Register of Deeds will have a record of transactions for that property.

To receive this information write to them at the above address and ask for all deeds and abstracts for your ancestor. If known, provide the section number and township. By limiting your request as much as possible you will save money and earn the gratitude of the person processing your request. You can speed the process by calling first for a preliminary check and a cost estimate.

The data received will include the homestead certificate number and a description of the property. If your ancestor was the original homesteader, use this number and description when requesting homestead information from either the ND Historical Society or from the National Archives.

The National Archives request the following: "If you have the legal description (section, township, and range numbers) of the land you are interested in, there should be little problem in locating the land entry case file, if it still exists. If the entry was made and completed before the General Land Office changed its records keeping system in 1908, the case file should be held by the National Archives.”

The Clerk of District Court has limited birth, marriage, and death information for the period prior to state record keeping. It is always worth checking.

The Pembina County Historical Society has some cemetery transcription books available for sale.
Check with them for other information they may also have.
