VA Isaiah Marks was the son of Thomas and Keziah Marks. He married 1) Rachel Rankin abt 1817, perhaps in Loudoun Co VA. By this marriage there was a daughter, Uriah K. Marks, born 1818, who married William Grayson 25 Feb 1836. Uriah and William Grayson are in this census; they were the parents of 12 children. There is also the possibility of a second daughter but she has not yet been identified. Isaiah Marks married 2) Selah Olive 9 March 1830 Henderson Co KY and they became the parents of three children: dau Clementine Marks, born 1830, married 1) Charles C. Baker, son of Moses Baker and Leannah Marks, 12 Jan 1856 Henderson Co KY by whom she had two daughters. Both Clementine's daughters and Charles Baker died in 1858. Clementine married 2) Edward Simpson Duncan, son of John Bunion Duncan and Susan Slaughter, 12 Jul 1860 Henderson Co KY by whom she had 5 children. The second child of Isaiah and Selah Marks was William A. Marks who is listed at household 298/294 of this census. The third child is son Thomas Marks, who is included in this listing. Isaiah Marks was widely known as a land-swapper whose handshake property deals lead to early Henderson Co Court battles that weren't finally resolved until 1850. Isaiah is referred to in one court record as "a drinking fellow". Read his father's will . Press your browser's back button to return here. Isaiah and Selah are Carole Palmer's 3great-grandparents. He died in 1864 and is probably buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Carole Palmer and Pearlene Melton Johnson. Ruth Ashe and Jean Marks were also helpful.
Selah 63 f housekeeper
NC There is a Rutherford Co NC marriage Record of a Sealey Melton to a James Oliver; it is dated only 181-; bondsman was John Guffey. I believe this to be the Selah Olive who married Isaiah Marks in 1830 Henderson Co KY. Melton researchers say Selah was the dau of Daniel Melton and Elizabeth Norvell of Rutherford Co NC. Daniel Melton left a will there dated 15 Apr 1848 but all of his 12 children are not named. Selah died 17 Dec 1867; she is probably buried at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. I would very much like to hear from anyone who has information about John Oliver of Rutherford Co NC. Carole Palmer.
