Lifetime Arizona resident Socorro H. Acosta, 82, of Claypool, Ariz., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa. She was born in Superior, Ariz. on Jan. 28, 1928, the daughter of Manuel and Sarah Hernandez.
A member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Socorro loved cooking for all her family. She always put everyone before herself. Family was very important to Socorro; she enjoyed all of her grandchildren and loved all her children. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Her husband, Estevan Acosta, preceded her in death on April 7, 1997.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, 844 W. Sullivan St., Miami, Ariz. Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. Interment at Mt. Breeze Memorial Gardens, Miami-Superior Highway, Miami, Ariz.

Mary Elizabeth Adams, 89, of Globe died Jan. 31, 2004, at Copper Mountain Inn.
She was born in Denver, Colo., and moved to Arizona 28 years ago from
Massachusetts.
She was a nurse at Gila General Hospital and a member of Gila County Sheriff's
Reserve.
Surviving Mrs. Adams are one daughter, Alicia Flanagan of Globe; one son, Gary
C. Adams of Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and
four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St. John's
Episcopal Church in Globe. The family was assisted by Lamont Mortuary of Globe.

Sallie Adley, 78, of Peridot died Nov. 30, 2003, at Copper Mountain Inn in
Globe. She was born in San Carlos.
She is survived by two sons, Hanson Adley of San Carlos and Deon Adley of
Peridot; three daughters, Lorraine Mallow, Delores Adley and Velma Adley, all of
Peridot; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral service for Mrs. Adley was conducted Dec. 7 at Peridot Lutheran Church.
Interment was in Upper Peridot Cemetery. Lamont Mortuary of Globe handled
arrangements.
ANDREZ
Leah Marcine Andrez, 62, of San Carlos died Aug. 25, 2003, at Good Samaritan
Medical Center in Phoenix. She was born in San Carlos and her occupation was a
nurse.
She is survived by one son, Edison Cassadore of Tucson; two daughters, Jonell
Cassadore and Jennifer Cassadore of San Carlos; one brother, Evans Sisto of San
Lorenzo, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral mass was conducted Aug. 30 at St. Charles Catholic Church in San
Carlos. Interment was in Northgate Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
ARMER
George A. Armer, 88, died March 21 [2003] in Redlands, Calif. He was born in
Globe and moved with his family to Whittier, Calif., in 1922. His father, Tom,
was Gila County Sheriff in 1917-1918.
He was production manager at U.S. Rubber Company, retiring after 30 years.
From 1967 to 1983, he embarked on a second career with A. Finkl and Sons, a
manufacturer of tool and die steel. In his final retirement, he volunteered at
the Golden Oaks Seniors, the Hilltoppers Garden Club, and the local arboretum at
Runnings Springs, Calif., in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Claire; four stepchildren Heather, David and John
Hall and Linda Garrett; one brother, Paul Armer; 13 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
He often returned to Globe, especially during roundup time at the Armer ranch.
Family and friends will gather in September at the Armer homestead where his
ashes will find their final resting place.
BEJARANO
Peter F. Bejarano, 63, of San Martin,
Calif., died July 28 [2003] in Gilroy, Calif. He was born in Miami.
After receiving his bachelor's of science degree in electrical engineering, he
started his career working for Salt River Project in Tempe, then went into the
semiconductor industry working for 33 years for companies in Arizona and
California. He retired for a short time before becoming an elementary school
teacher. He also coached Pop Warner football and Morgan Hill Pony baseball for
approximately 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; four sons and three daughters-in-law,
Anthony P. and Melanie Bejarano of Gilbert, Paul M. and Yvonne Bejarano and
Rogelio A. and Jennifer Bejarano, all of Gilroy, and J. Dominic Bejarano of
Morgan Hill, Calif.; one daughter and son-in-law, Denise M. and Art Arellano of
Gilbert; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 4 at St. Catherine Catholic
Church in Morgan Hill.

BERNAL
Martiana Bernal, 88, of Superior died July 1 [2003] at Copper Mountain Inn in
Globe. She was born in Gila, N.M., and had lived in Arizona 53 years.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and Senior Citizens of
Superior.
Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Candy and Alfred Rocha
of Globe, Cathy and Leroy Valdez of New Mexico, Flora and Manuel Rameriz and
Frances Castillo of California; one brother, Genaro Tapia of Central, N.M.; 14
grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-granchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 7 at Our Lady of the Blessed
Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami. Interment was in Mountain Breeze Memorial
Gardens. Arrangements were under the direction of Miles Funeral Services.
BOAN
Russell Boan, 85, died June 23 [2003] at Tucson Northwest Hospital following a
brief illness. He was born in Wright City, Okla., and moved to Arizona at the
age of three. He spent many of his young years in the Bloody Basin area and
witnessed the first motorized vehicle to enter the Basin in 1926.
He was a World War II Army veteran and moved to Oregon in the late 1960s to
work for Weyerhouser Company. He retired from there in 1984 and returned to the
Globe area where he resided until the time of his death.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Debbie Finley of Mesa;
one daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ron Ray of Globe; close friends and
companions, Sue Rodgers and Roland Bills; four grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
BRAY
Elizabeth Cranswick Bray, 92, died June 1 [2003] at her residence in Claypool.
She was born in Lancaster, England, and worked as a laundry person at Copper
Hills Motel.
She is survived by one daughter, Norma Gilliland of Globe; one son, Ronald
Bray of Globe; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 20
great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted June 6 at Pinal Cemetery in Central Heights.

Ronnie Bread Jr., 19, of San Carlos died July 11 [2003] at Maricopa Medical
Center in Phoenix. He was born in Phoenix and was a lifelong Arizona resident.
He worked as a firefighter for San Carlos Forestry.
Survivors include one daughter, Arayauna Faith Bread of San Carlos; his
mother, Arlene Bread of San Carlos; three sisters, Renee Bread, Reyeet Steele
and Thomasena Steele, all of San Carlos; and one brother, Christopher Steele of
San Carlos.
Funeral service was conducted July 20 at World Evangelist Revival Center in
San Carlos. Interment followed at San Carlos Cemetery. Lamont Mortuary of Globe
handled arrangements.
BENAVIDEZ
Rosie Benavidez, 40, of Eagar died Sept. 9 [2003] in Globe. She was born in
Bagdad and was a lifelong Arizona resident.
She is survived by her husband, Eddie Benavidez of Eagar; one daughter and
son-in-law, Leticia and Jeremy Rocha of Miami; two sons, Eddie Joe Benavidez of
Eagar and Estevan Benavidez of Miami; five sisters, Ramona Carbajal of Prescott
and Irma Gutierrez, Vina Willhite, Norma Saiz and Maria Carranza, all of Tucson;
five brothers, Roger Vigueria and Johnny Longoria of Eugene, Ore., and Raul
Vigueria, Hector Vigueria and Jessie Longoria of Tucson; and three
grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 13 at Our Lady of the Blessed
Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami. Interment was in Globe Cemetery. Lamont

Billie J. Caddell, 69, of Globe died Oct. 4, 2003, at Copper Mountain Inn. She
was born in Rosehill, Va., and moved to Arizona eight years ago from Ohio. She
was a retired waitress.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Pitzer of Globe; two daughters, Rosanna
McGaha of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and Pam Caddell of Globe; three sons, Levi Caddell
and David Caddell of Globe, and Chesley Caddell of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight
sisters, Ruth Duncan, Wanda Weaver, Christine LeMaster and Ida Mae Pace, all of
Harland, Ky., Linea Wagner of Hillsboro, Ohio, Linda Watson of Aurora, Ind.,
Martha Paul of Corbin, Ky., and Marie Sparks of Batavia, Ohio; two brothers,
Lloyd Johnson and Tony Johnson of Covington, Ky.; 13 grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.

Home in Grants Lick, Ky. Interment will be in Peach Grove Cemetery in Peach

Brittinee Dawn Cano, 18, of Marksville, La., died Sept. 21, 2003, from
injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born in Globe and attended
school in the Miami school district before moving to Louisiana about eight years
ago.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Kelly Dawn (Cormack) and Kurt
Dubea of Marksville; her father, Rudy Cano of Phoenix; and grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Jose Cano of Phoenix and former Miami resident Jim Hostetler of Tucson.
Funeral service was conducted Sept. 23 in Marksville.
CASTANEDA
Jesus Granado "Chuey" Castaneda, 84, of Miami died Sept. 17, 2003, at Heritage
Health Care Center in Globe. He was born in Globe and worked as a heavy-duty
mechanic for Cities Service and Pinto Valley Copper companies.
Survivors include four sons, Jesus "BeBe" Castaneda Jr., James E. Castaneda
and Joey Castaneda, all of Globe, and Ralph Paul Castaneda of San Francisco,
Calif.; five daughters, Inez Castaneda-Drescher of Tennessee, Connie Marie
Falquez of Central Heights, and Olivia Cordova, Mary Lou Castaneda and Annie
Duran, all of California; three sisters, Pauline Delgado and Andrea Mariotti of
California, and Genieva Lopez of Globe; 42 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren
and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Sept. 22 at Pinal Cemetery in Central

CASTANEDA
Memorial services for longtime area resident Refugia "Ruth" (Cuca) Perry
Castaneda, 79, will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Our Lady of the
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami.
She is survived by her husband, Jesus; three children, Frank, Ann, and
Rosemary; one brother, Ernest Jaurigui; and grandchildren.
CEARLEY
Harold W. Cearley, 79, of Roosevelt died Aug. 8 [2003] at Cobre Valley
Community Hospital in Globe. He was born in Crystal Springs, Ark., and had moved
to Arizona 14 years ago from Washington.
He was a World War II Air Force veteran and was manager of a mobile home park.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Cearley of Roosevelt; two daughters, Terri
Cochran of Ridgefield, Wash., and Melanie Becker of Globe; one stepson, Reginald
Selman of Alamogordo, N.M., one brother, Darrell Cearley of Needles, Calif.; 11
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at the
family home. Lamont Mortuary of Globe assisted the family.
CONTRERAS
Lorenzo "Larry" Contreras, 76, died July 24 [2003] at his residence in
Claypool. He was born in Miami and was a lifelong area resident.
He was an Army veteran and worked at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company
for 30 years. After retiring, he worked for the United States Forest Service and
various other jobs. He was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament
Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Glenda of Claypool; one son, Richard of Phoenix;
two daughters, Grace of Tempe and Mary Jane of Chandler; five step-children,
Kathy, Sheryl, Johnny, Buddy and Danny; one sister, Luisa Mesa; eight
grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today (Wednesday, July
30) at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami. Interment
will follow at Pinal Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles
Mortuary.

88, of Roosevelt who died Sept. 1, 2003, at Cobre Valley Community Hospital.

Eleanor Adeline Cooper, 88, of Roosevelt died Sept. 1, 2003, at Cobre Valley
Community Hospital in Globe.
She and her late husband, Leonard, formerly owned and operated Five Mile
Landing Resort in Topock, the Virginia Lakes Resort in the high Sierras in
California for 10 years, and the Pikes Airport in San Diego, Calif., for five
years.
Survivors include one son, Leonard Joseph Cooper Jr. and his wife, Jane, of
Roosevelt; one daughter, Karen Ferm of San Diego; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Mountain
Breeze Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral
Services.
COTA
Mabelena Maria Cota, 15, of Phoenix died July 20 [2003] in San Carlos. She was
born in Show Low and was an honor student at Washington High School in Phoenix.
She like computers, basketball, baseball, writing, drawing and making baskets.
She won awards at Heard Museum for basket making.
Survivors include her parents, Adolph and Veda Cota of Phoenix; two sisters,
Sheila Marie Cota and Hadassah Marie Cota of Phoenix; and grandparents, Dennis
and Lena Nelson of San Carlos.
Funeral service was conducted July 24 at Assembly of God Church in San Carlos.
Interment followed at San Carlos Cemetery. Lamont Mortuary of Globe was in
charge of arrangements.
CRAWFORD
Barbara Ann Crawford, 66 of Globe, died Aug. 15, 2003 in Mesa. Born in
Oklahoma, she had lived in Arizona for 56 years. She was a nurse's aide at
Miami-Inspiration Hospital and later Cobre Valley Community Hospital
administration.
She is survived by two sons, Bob Crawford of Globe and Randy Crawford of
Apache Junction; two sisters, Betty Vasquez of Globe and Vicky Avelar of Kearny;
four brothers, Danny Nelson of Globe, Tommy Nelson, Curtis Nelson and Jim
Gillette.
A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Aug. 20 at Lamont Mortuary Chapel.
Inurnment will be in the Resthaven section of Pinal Cemetery immediately
following the service. Lamont Mortuary handed arrangements.

Brenda Kay Crawford, 55, of Globe died June 18 [2003] at Mesa Lutheran
Hospital. She was a homemaker who was born in Miami.
She is survived by her husband, Doug Crawford of Globe; three daughters and
one son-in-law, Tina and Rick Poeling and Beatrice Manues of Globe, and
Cassandra Gooding of Wheatfields; one sister, Judy Smart of Globe; 14
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at
Wheatfields Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Lamont
Mortuary of Globe.
CULPEPPER
William (Sonny) Culpepper, 66, of Globe died Aug. 13, 2003 at Cobre Valley
Community Hospital. He was born in Morton, Texas, and lived in Arizona 51 years.
He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Culpepper of Globe; two sons, William
Howard (Pepper) Culpepper of Globe and Randy J.D. (Shorty) Culpepper of West
Plains, Mo.; three sisters; and five grandchildren.

Margaret Dale, 68, of Peridot died March 20, 2006, at Banner Thunderbird Medical
Center in Phoenix. She was born in San Carlos.
She was a community liaison for the Whiteriver School District.
Survivors include two sons, Troy Bonito of Canyon Day and Timothy “Ernie” Bonito
of Whiteriver; three daughters, Marilyn Salter of Peridot, Anna Sampson of Salt
Lake City, Utah, and Marsha Quay of Canyon Day; two brothers, Breezy Johnson Sr.
of Canyon Day and Sylvester Johnson of Phoenix; two sisters, Jeanette Massey and
Genevieve Seymour of Canyon Day; 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was conducted March 25 at Canyon Day Miracle Church. Interment
was in Canyon Day Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Lamont
Mortuary of Globe.
DALMOLIN
Albert J. Dalmolin, 87, of Sun City West died May 29 [2003]. He was born in
Globe and graduated from Globe High School in 1933.
He played football at GHS and was known as Jumpin' Joe. After graduating from
GHS, he went to Arizona State College and played for the Bulldogs where he was
known as "Al Thug." ASU's mascot before the Sun Devils was Bulldogs. He was all
border conference for three years and also played Texas league baseball.
He coached football and wrestling at Phoenix Union High School for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Dalmolin; one daughter, Janice; one son,
Albert Dalmolin II; three brothers, Art Dalmolin of Gold Canyon, Richard
Dalmolin and Frank Dalmolin of Globe; two grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
DONA
Joseph Dona Sr., 68, of Bylas died July 9 [2003] in Mesa. He was born in Bylas
and grew up in the Black Point and Navajo Point areas.
He worked as a farm hand in Pima then moved to Phoenix to attend trade school
to become a heavy equipment operator. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs
for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen; four sons, Tim Lee Ethelbah, Darin Dewane
Dona, Joseph Dona Jr., and Rufus Dona; five daughters, Theresa Susan, Jo Nell,
Sherry, Pamela and Veronica Dona; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service for Mr. Dona was conducted July 17 at Bylas Assembly of God
Church. Interment was in Black Point Cemetery. Morris David's Safford Funeral
Home handled arrangements.

Franklin Dosela, 56, of Bylas, passed away July 26, in Mesa. Franklin was born
May 12, 1950, in San Carlos to Frank and Inez Moses Dosela.
Funeral service was conducted Aug. 6 at the Lutheran Church in Bylas with
interment at the Navajo Point Cemetery.
Morris Safford Funeral Home handled arrangements.
DOWNIE
Former San Carlos resident Janice Marie Downie, 58, died Aug. 31, 2003 in
Tucson. An Arizona resident for 19 years, she worked several years as a
missionary on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. She also taught at a Christian
school for a few years.
Survivors include one son, Theodore Downie of Tucson; two brothers, George
Downie of Tucson and Michael Downie of Wylie, Texas; and one sister, Marilyn
Baker of Pittsburg, Kan.
Funeral service was conducted Sept. 5 at Calvary Chapel in Tucson. A graveside
service was also conducted Sept. 5 at Globe Cemetery. Miles Funeral Services of
Globe assisted the family with arrangements.
DOWNING
Donovan "D" Downing, 82, of Tucson died May 3 [2003] at the Veterans
Administration Hospital. He was born in Rolla, Kan.
He was a World War II and Korean Conflict Navy veteran. He was a life member
of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1704 and Pinal Mountain BPO Elks Lodge No.
2809. He served as a Navy recruiter in Globe.
He was also a 50-year member of Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) No. 176, and
active in the Southern Arizona Midget Racing Association.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine N. Downing; two sisters, Agnes Wedlake and
Phyllis Case of California; one brother, Wade L. Downing of East Los Angeles,
Calif.; and two stepdaughters, N. Sue Moyer of St. Johns and T. Gail Morrow of
Newcumberland, W.Va.
DRAKE
Gary Richard Drake, 66, died June 7 [2003] at his home in Globe. He was born
in Stambaugh, Mich., and moved to Arizona from Illinois.
He was employed by Gila County as a shop foreman and was a member of First
Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margo Drake of Globe; one daughter, Dawn Winter of
Peoria; and two granddaughters.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at First
Presbyterian Church in Globe. Assisting the family is Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
EASTIN
Robert Lee Eastin, 58, died July 31 [2003] at his residence in Globe. He was
born in Denver, Colo., and had lived in Arizona 25 years.
He was an Army veteran and worked as a tree trimmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammey Noll of Denver and Nita Berryhill of
Globe; his mother, Nita L. Ohmart of Arvada, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
Lamont Mortuary of Globe assisted the family with private memorial services in
Denver.
ERKLANS
Ova Erklans, 96, of Globe died Sept. 23, 2003, at Heritage Health Care Center.
She was born in Mobile, Texas, and had lived in Arizona more than 90 years.
Prior to her move to Globe in 1996, she and her late husband, John, lived in
Palominas on the San Pedro River where they had 30 acres of permanent pasture
and farmland.
She is survived by two daughters, Ima Lee Shelton of Globe and Linda Fletcher;
two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and
18 great-great-great grandchildren.
Graveside service was conducted Sept. 25 at Pinal Cemetery in Central Heights.

ESQUIVEL
Margarita Tarango Esquivel, 88, of Globe died July 10 [2003] at Heritage
Health Care Center. She was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and moved to Arizona 62
years ago from New Mexico.
She worked as a dishwasher in local restaurants.
She is survived by four sons, Bobby Esquivel of Denver, Colo., Paul Tarango
Jr. of Globe, Domingo Tarango of Mesa, and Joe Tarango of San Fernando, Calif.;
nine daughters, Helen Quinn of Scottsdale; Connie Gonzalez of Pacoima, Calif.,
Toni Silva of Lancaster, Calif., Phyllis Cordova of Brighton, Colo., and Maggie
Salazar, Mary Bradford, Libby Tarango and Jenny Aguilar, all of Globe; and
numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

was born in Miami and graduated from Miami High School in 1962. She had lived in
Delaware approximately 30 years.

and Linda of Toms River, N.J.; her mother, Frances Gould of Duncan; two sisters,

Joyce Irene Fisher, 74, of Globe died June 8 [2003] at Good Samaritan Hospital
in Phoenix. She was born in Davis, Ill., and had lived in Arizona 41 years.
She worked as a florist at Cecil's Rainbow Flowers, Ann's Flowers, Ardell's
Flower Shack, and The Red Rose. She was a member of Manzanita Garden Club and
Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Club of Globe.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Thomas Fisher of Globe; two daughters
and sons-in-law, Debra and Blas Madrid of Miami and Sharon and Jim Kowalzyk of
Globe; one sister, Doris Smith of Globe; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

was born in Lordsburg, N.M., and had lived in Arizona 37 years.
He was a Navy veteran and worked as a solution utility operator for

Tamie Medina of Globe and Sherri Edmoston of Dripping Springs; one son, Billy

Pascuala Gamboa de Garay, 89, of Miami died June 6 [2003] at Cobre Valley
Community Hospital. She was born in Chihuahua, Mexico.
A longtime resident of Globe-Miami, she graduated from Miami High School then
returned to Mexico to marry Marcelo Garay. He died after only five years of
marriage and Pascuala returned to the United States to join her family and
became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
She is survived by three sisters, Sofia Gamboa, Josefina Canizales and
Agustina Barajas, all of Miami; and one brother, Tomas Gamboa of Miami.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 10 at Our Lady of the Blessed
Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami. Interment was in Mountain Breeze Memorial

Jim Gillette, 69, of Lakeside died Aug. 7 [2003]. He was born in Globe.
He was an Army veteran and retired from the Arizona State Highway Department.

Longtime Globe-Miami resident Bobby Dow Hale died Aug. 7 [2003] in Chandler
after a battle with cancer.
He served in the U.S. Navy where he learned his trade as a mechanic. He
retired from Phelps Dodge in 2001 as a supervisor.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hale; three children and their spouses, Kevin
and Karla Hale of Tucson, and Jon and Kare Swanson and Michael and Lorri Moreno
of Phoenix; two brothers, Vernon Hale of Tempe and Hughey Paul Hale of Morenci;

HARBISON
James "Jim" Maurice Harbison, 79, of Globe died July 1 [2003] at Cobre Valley
Community Hospital. He was born in Maplewood, Mo., and had lived in Arizona 77
years.
He was a World War II Air Force veteran and longtime owner/operator of Globe
Hardware. He was a member of Globe Optimist Club, Pinal Mountain Elks, Veterans
of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Chamber of Commerce.
He was also a Globe School Board member and past president and served on Globe
City Council for many years. He was instrumental in moving city hall to its
present location and helped procure 40 acres of land for Copper Rim School.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Harbison of Globe; two daughters and one
son-in-law, Eileen Harbison of Claypool and Shirley and Bill Liles of Globe; two
sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard and Eve Harbison of Larkspur, Colo., and John
and Jeanne Harbison of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Reed of Scottsdale
and Norma Dee of Phoenix; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at Pinal Mountain Elks
Lodge in Globe.

HARDY
Leonard W. Hardy, 92, died Aug. 21, 2003, at his home in Mesa. He was born in
Bumble Bee and attended school in Buckeye where he excelled in baseball and
football. In 1932 he won the Arizona state amateur boxing title.
He moved to the Globe-Miami area in 1949 and worked as a butcher and later as
a shovel operator for the Castle Dome mine. While working in the mines, he
became interested in the turquoise that was found with the copper ore. He began
to market the turquoise to Native American Indians for use in their jewelry and
soon opened a wholesale turquoise operation in the Miami area.
Hardy and his wife, Geraldine, later moved the operation to Kingman after
successfully bidding on the removal of turquoise pockets at the Kingman, Castle
Dome and Sleeping Beauty mines. Kingman became known as the turquoise capital of
the world and L.W. Hardy earned the nickname of Turquoise King. In the early
1970s, Hardy Turquoise Company was producing over half of the world's supply of
turquoise. He stayed active in the turquoise business until the age of 85.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy of Gilbert; six grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

Hubert Allen Haught, 88, formerly
of Globe, died Aug. 8, 2006, at Windgates Adult Care Nursing Home in Tucson.
Haught had been a Navy Seabee during World War II before working for Inspiration
Copper Company as a shovel operator. He had also worked for eight years for the
City of Globe as building Inspector. He was a member of the Pinal Mountain Elks
and the White Mountain Masonic Lodge #3.
He is survived by his wife, Helen “WeeZee” of Tucson; two daughters, Pam (Mack)
Stuart of Tucson and Alana Haught of Hilo, HI; a brother, Austin of Gisela; five
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
brothers Homer, Jim San, Lloyd, Frank and Alfred Haught and Clifford Martin; and
sisters Mildred Borosh, Virgie Joy, Lucille Sorrum and Dessie Vineyard.

Dale Henderson, 80, died Aug. 2 [2003] in Mesa. He was a longtime resident of
the Globe-Miami area and worked at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company.

Gerald D. “Jerry” Holiday died March 21, 2006. He was born and lived in Globe
most of his life. He moved to Grants, N.M., two years ago where he died at the
age of 61.
He worked construction in the local area and worked and retired from the city of
Globe. He was a Vietnam War veteran and a life member of the Globe VFW.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Byron and Tanya Holiday; three
sisters, Marion Lightner from Mexico, Margaret Crago of Globe, and Beth
Alexander of Pima; two brothers, Roger of San Francisco, Calif., and David of
Queen Creek; and two grandsons.
His request to have his body donated to research to help find a cure for
arthritis was granted. A memorial will be announced at a later date.
HOLIMAN
Raymond Holiman, 36, died Aug. 12, 2003 at his home in Tucson.
He is survived by one son, Jesus; his mother, Rita Diane Langley of Globe; one
brother, Bill Holiman of Tucson; and one sister, Crystal Holiman of Casa Grande.

HUGGINS
Charles R. Huggins, 64, leader of the Arizona AFL-CIO from 1987 through 2002,
died Aug. 5 [2003].
He was an Air Force veteran and when he returned to Globe, he began his union
service as a member of Local 518 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers. He served as foreman, general foreman, and instructor of apprentices
and business agent for I.B.E.W.
He served on the board of directors of Gila General Hospital and created
Ensuring Opportunity Coalition, a beacon of hope and opportunity for
underemployed and dislocated workers.
He was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Workers Memorial on the
grounds of the state capital which was dedicated in 1999. The statue honors
Arizona workers who died or were seriously injured on the job.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Huggins of Phoenix; one daughter and
son-in-law, Lisa and Phillip Hubbard; and two grandchildren.
Funeral service for Mr. Huggins was conducted Aug. 9 at First Christian Church
of Tempe. Interment was in Resthaven Park Cemetery.

JACKSON
Philip C. Jackson, 79, of Globe died June 17 [2003] at Cobre Valley Community
Hospital losing his battle with cancer. He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and
had lived in Arizona 75 years.
He was a retired insurance adjuster and owned Jackson Claims Service in Yuma
for 30 years. He was also an investigator for the law firm Westover, Choules and
Shadle in Yuma and more recently for Thompson, Montgomery and DeRose in Globe.
He was a Perpetual Master Mason and was named the 1995 Mason of the Year by
White Mountain Lodge No. 3 of Globe; a 45-year member of Rotary International
and received the Rotary Red Rose Citation for Outstanding Service; past
president and life member of Affiliated Adjusters of Western United States; life
member of National Association of Insurance Adjusters, Arizona Insurance Claims
Association, and Blue Goose International; and served on the Globe Library
Board. He was a long-time Rotarian.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Jackson of Globe; two sons and
daughters-in-law, Phil and Christine Jackson of Troy, Mich., and Neal and Sara
Jackson of Lakeside; one brother, Dan Jackson of Vista, Calif.; two
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

born in Omaha, Neb., and moved to Arizona six months ago from Austin, Texas.

Conrad Kinney, 40, of San Carlos died July 15 [2003] in San Carlos. Born in

LAZOVICH
Eli S. "Ted" Lazovich, 69, of Phoenix died June 7 [2003] after an eight-month
battle with lung cancer. He was born in Miami.
He was co-captain of the 1950-51 Miami High School state basketball
championship team. He was the first Arizona high school student to score more
than 1,000 points, including 50 points in one game. He also played basketball
and baseball at the University of Arizona for four years.
After teaching several years in the Osborne School District at Clarendon
School, he went to work for the Arizona State Compensation Fund, retiring in
1993.
He was a member of the Phoenix Bowling Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; one son, Marc; two daughters and one
son-in-law, Cecile Pettle, and David and Michelle Lazovich Schadler; his mother,
Violet; one brother, Bill Lazovich of Tucson; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Green Acres Mortuary at

Marc Anthony Leber, 40, of Globe died Aug. 2, 2003, in Globe. He was born in
Loma Linda, Calif. He was an enrolled member of the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation
in Sells.
He was a Bureau of Indian Affairs special agent assigned to the San Carlos
Apache Reservation. He had recently transferred from BIA duty in Nevada where he
started working in 1996. Previously he had worked for the U.S. Border Patrol and
the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in California.
Survivors include his wife, Inez; three sons, Mark J. Leber, Scott P. Leber
and Eric A. Leber, all of Globe; his parents, William E. and Irma R. Kesler of
Chino Valley; three brothers, Alexander A. Kesler of Beaumont, Calif., Adrian A.

Elmer Keith Lofgreen, 69, of Globe died July 29 [2003] at Banner Baywood
Medical Center in Mesa. He was born in Chandler and was a lifelong Arizona
resident.
He was a truck driver for Kevlin Steel and also worked for Inspiration
Consolidated Copper Company, Hagen Construction, Cecil Trucking, Dixon Oil and
Woodburn Tire. He was a member of the Elks and was a past Exalted Ruler.

She was a girl Scout leader and was active in the Cursillistas, Social Club,
Sonerense Club, and Porfirio Diaz. She worked as a chef for many years and owned
two restaurants and a deli.

Rosalie Machukay, 63, of San Carlos died July 18 [2003] at Heritage Health
Care Center in Globe. She was born in San Carlos and was a lifelong resident.
She is survived by three brothers, Anthony Machukay of Laveen, and Joseph
Machukay and Fernando Machukay of San Carlos; and four sisters, Veronica Cadue,
Dorothy Yellow Eyes, Agatha Lovato and Bernadette Machukay, all of San Carlos.

Gwendolyn "Gwen" Bates Baird Machula, 89, of Globe died Sept. 25, 2003, at
Heritage Health Care Center. She was born in Taylor.
A descendant of three generations of northern Arizona LDS pioneers, she was a
faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by three sons, Paul Machula of Globe, Myron Machula of Kansas
City, Mo., and Orville Baird of Cornville; three sisters, Pearl Solomon and
Marjorie Whiting of Taylor, and Anita Schmaltz of Gallup, N.M.; one brother, Max
Bates of California; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six

Charles S. "Chuck" McNew, former Miami resident, died July 2 [2003]. He was 83
years of age.
He is survived by five daughters, Kathleen Myers, Dawn Varnes, Theresa

She was an active member of Full Gospel Church and was employed by the San
Carlos Apache Tribe for a few years before becoming ill.

nine years ago. She had worked as an administrative assistant in the
construction industry and, for the past three years, for the probation
department of the Superior Court of Gila County.

Vivian Bonito Nozie, 47, died June 8 [2003] in Phoenix. She was born in San
Carlos.
She was active in the Head Start program and helped start a youth group called
Y.H.Y. The program was focused on drug-free youth and mentoring.

skimmer and was a member of Mine-Mill and Smelter Workers (Steelworkers Local
586). An active member of the community, he was involved in culturally relevant
activities such as the Globe-Miami Latinos Club, was a founding member of the
Globe-Miami Retiree's Union Club, and a member of Our Lady of the Blessed
Sacrament Catholic Church.

and his wife, Verma, of Phoenix; one daughter, Eleanor Pastor of Claypool; three

Donald "Don" R. Skelly Sr., 68, of Globe died July 15 [2003] at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Phoenix. He was born in Globe and moved back to Globe in 1969 after
working 15 years in engineering for the Arizona State Highway Department in
Sanders and Holbrook.
He also worked for Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, served as Gila
County Chief Deputy Treasurer, and retired from the Gila County Health and
Animal Control/Rabies Department.
He was a Korean War Navy veteran, a member of St. Paul's United Methodist
Church, and a past member of Pinal Mountain Elks.
Survivors include his wife, Nadibah "Nina" T. Skelly; one son, Donald R.
Skelly Jr., and daughter-in-law, Christina; three grandchildren and several

Former area resident Coy Buford Splane, 65, of Show Low died Sept. 11 [2003]
on Forest Service Road 229 in Coconino County near Happy Jack.
He was a Navy veteran and worked as a foreman in the copper mines before
retiring and moving to Show Low six years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Splane of Show Low; one son, Jerry Splane of
Globe; one daughter, Joni Splane of Show Low; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Fletcher's Mortuary of Show Low handled arrangements.
STENGEL
Edna Louise Stengel of Globe died Aug. 2 [2003] at Heritage Health Care
Center. She was born in Isabel, S.D., and moved to Arizona 23 years ago from New
Mexico.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Stengel of Globe; five daughters, Laura
Parker and Shirley Wilson of Rapid City, S.D., Kathy Klinchman of Spearfish,
S.D., Debbie Cordisco of Tucson, and Lianne Stengel of Coeur d'Alene, Ida.; two
sons, Gary Stengel of Tucson and Gregory Stengel of El Cajon, Calif.; two
sisters, Margie Vancleve of Whitewood, S.D., and Verla Marti of Rapid City; 19
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Lamont Mortuary
Chapel. Interment will be private.
STRONG
A graveside service was conducted June 5 [2003] at South Lawn Cemetery in
Tucson for Raymond "Dad" Strong, 75, who died May 31 in Miami. He was born in
Indiana.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Arthur Kessler; two
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and others who called him dad, hence
the nickname.
TALGO
Stewart Talgo, 76, died May 29 [2003] in Globe. He was born in San Carlos.
At the age of 15, he was encouraged by his father to become a cowboy. He
worked as a ranch hand for Slaughter Mountain Cattle Association and owned his
own cattle.
He is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Mr. Talgo was conducted June 7 at Our Savior Lutheran
Church in Bylas. Morris David's Safford Funeral Home handled arrangements.
TAYLOR
Robert C. Taylor, 90, of Rossville, Ill., died Aug. 3 [2003] in Rossville. He
was born in Newell, Ind., and lived in Globe from 1952 through 1985.
He was a heavy duty mechanic for Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company.
Survivors include one son, Richard Taylor of Globe; one sister, Delores Lowe
of Danville, Ill.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Lamont Mortuary Chapel.
Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the
Resthaven Section of Pinal Cemetery in Central Heights.
TERRAZAS
Emilie Terrazas, 62, of Peridot died July 8 [2003]. She was born in East Fork
and reared in Morenci. She graduated from East Fork Lutheran School and attended
Bible College in Miracle Valley under A.A. Allen's Ministries.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Curtis and Tanya Romans of San
Carlos, and Debbie Terrazas of Peridot; her mother, Edith Longstreet of Bylas;
four brothers, George Longstreet and Tony Longstreet of Peridot, Robert
Longstreet of Bylas, and Corbert Longstreet of Safford; four sisters, Connie
Longstreet, Vivian Wilson, Betty Baylish and Gladys Hinton, all of Bylas; and
six grandchildren.
Funeral service was conducted July 15 at First Miracle Church in Bylas under
the direction of Morris-David's Safford Funeral Home.
THOMPSON
Retired Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Lyle Lee Thompson, 67, of Seattle,
Wash., died Aug. 4 [2003] in Seattle. He was born in Superior and reared in
Globe. He was a Vietnam veteran and received various commendations and medals.
Survivors include his wife, Mimi Thompson of Seattle; three sons, Curtis W.
Thompson of Sierra Vista, Thomas D. Thompson of Brockton, Mass., and Benjamin
Thompson of Seattle; one daughter, Karen J. Thompson of Eagle Rock, Calif.; one
brother, Aaron Thompson of Scottsdale; one sister, Darlene Reyes of Tucson; and
one grandson.
THORNBRUGH
Betty Johnson Thornbrugh, 67, of Globe died Sept. 14 [2003] at Banner Good
Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. She was a homemaker who was born in Globe.
She is survived by her husband, James Thornbrugh of Globe; one daughter,
Tressia Contreras of Phoenix; two stepsons, Donald Joe Thornbrugh of Chandler
and James T. Thornbrugh of Globe; two stepdaughters, Barbara White and Beverly
Wilson of Show Low; two sisters, Ann Shane of Alexandria, Va., and Olive
Harrington of Globe; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Holy Angels Catholic
Church. A rosary will follow at 6 p.m. at Holy Angles Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at
Holy Angels Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Globe Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
THORNE
Georgiana Thorne, 54, of Peridot died Sept. 14, 2003, in Bylas. She was born
in San Carlos and was a lifelong area resident.
She worked as a nurses aid at San Carlos Community Health Service.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Thorne Sr. of Peridot; three sons,
Timothy Thorne, Harold Thorne Jr. and Alfonzo Thorne Jr., all of San Carlos;
three daughters, Era Thorne, Linda Thorne and Peggy Thorne of San Carlos; her
parents, Jefferson and Era Black of San Carlos; five sisters, Glorianna Nosie,
Marion Norman and Victoria Nosie of San Carlos, Katherine Cardelaina of Phoenix,
and Velma Kinney of Bylas, and one adopted sister, Maybelline Kayson of San
Carlos; four brothers, Carl Kinney, Kenneth Black and Larry Black of San Carlos,
and Ferris Clark of Bylas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service was conducted Sept. 22 at Burdette Hall in San Carlos.
Interment was in Northgate Cemetery. Lamont Mortuary of Globe handled
arrangements.
TITLA
Dennis Titla Jr., 45, died Saturday, July 5 [2003] in Phoenix. Mr. Titla was
born Feb. 10, 1958 at to Dennis and Olive Titla Sr.
He is survived by his wife Rosalita and five children.
Wake for Mr. Titla is pending for Friday, July 11 at Rosalita Titla's
residence in Bylas at 5 p.m. Services are tentatively set for 3 p.m. Saturday at
the Bylas Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Morris David's Safford Funeral Home.
TITTLES
Kimberly Jean Nichols Tittes, 32, died Sept. 28, 2003. She was born in Globe
where she lived until moving to Scottsdale.
She was an emergency medical technician, worked for the forest service, and
attended college for the past several years.
Survivors include her husband, Jasen Tittes; one daughter, Reagen Tittes; her
mother and stepfather, Joan and Norman Todd; two sisters, Julie Nichols and Amie
Todd; two brothers, Taron Todd and Joseph Nichols-Noah; grandparents, Burnelle
Nichols and Ruth and Everett Todd; and a special friend, Jamie Jones.
Funeral service was conducted Oct. 4 at Miles Funeral Services Globe Chapel.
Interment was in Globe Cemetery
THOMPSON
Jonathan James Thompson, 22, of San Carlos died July 14 [2003] in San Carlos.
He was born in San Carlos and worked as a lifeguard for San Carlos Recreation
Center.
He is survived by his mother, Vickie Johnson of San Carlos; five brothers,
Daniel Thompson of Sells, and Danny Thompson, Johnson Thompson, Gilbert Ornelas
and Elijah Noland, all of San Carlos; three sisters, Amber Thompson, Justine
Thompson and Danielle Thompson of San Carlos; his paternal grandmother, Camelia
Belvado of San Carlos; and maternal great-grandmother, Edith Johnson of San
Carlos.
Funeral Mass was conducted July 19 at St. Charles Catholic Church in San
Carlos. Interment was in Upper Peridot Cemetery. Arrangements were under the
direction of Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
TUCKER
James "Jimmy" Tucker, 37, died Aug. 2 [2003] at his home in Miami. He was born
in Miami and was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
He is survived by his mother, Carmen Tucker of Miami; two brothers, Albert
Tucker and Michael Tucker of Miami; three sisters, Lisa Spry of Carlin, Nev.,
and Cathy Russell and Pamela Tucker of Miami; and his grandmothers, Beatrice
AuBuchon of Claypool and Margaret Codero of Miami.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Miles in Miami. Rosary
will follow at Miles at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Our
Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami. Interment will follow at
Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens.
WARREN
Nancy Ann Warren of Globe died July 4 [2003] at Cobre Valley Community
Hospital. She was 66. An excellent artist who enjoyed making blankets and
contributing to many Christian organizations, she moved to the local area from
Oklahoma two years ago.
She is survived by three sons, Mike Warren of California, Kenneth Warren of
Montana and Terry Warren of Central Heights; a daughter, Vicki Warren of Miami;
brothers, Terry Smith of Globe, J.D. Smith of Central Heights and Doug Smith of
Germany; sisters, Loretta Padgett, Ruth Lowry and Diane Taraba; nine
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Virla Warrren.
A memorial service was held Sunday, July 6 at the Word of Life Assembly of God
Church in Miami. Inurnment will be at Coolidge Cemetery. Miles-Damron Funeral
Home in Globe was in charge of arrangements.
WEBB
Mamie Eleanor Webb, 99, died Aug. 28, 2003, at her home in Cave Creek. She was
born in Topeka, Kan., and moved with her family to Tucson where she attended the
University of Arizona.
She married Carroll Council Webb on July 24, 1926, in Miami and resided in
Miami until 1999 when she moved to Cave Creek to be near family. She was active
in a number of organizations including Zonta, the Literary club, and several art
groups and was an accomplished artist, photographer and painter who ran her own
jewelry business, Ariglo.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Dodd of Cave Creek; one son and
daughter-in-law, Robert and Helen Webb of Billings, Mont.; eight grandchildren,
six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was conducted at Mountain View memorial Gardens in Mesa.
WILLIAMSON
Alvis Dwayne Williamson, 60, of Globe died June 26 [2003]at Navapache Hospital
in Show Low. He was born in Miami.
He worked as a pipefitter for Miami Copper/BHP Copper for 35 years and was a
deacon at River of Life Church.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Minefee Williamson of Globe; two daughters
and sons-in-law, Maurisa and Brant Palmer of Claypool and Traca and Gary Lopez
of Mesa; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cardella Williamson of Globe;
one brother, Berle Williamson of Globe; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral service was conducted June 30 at Central Heights Baptist Church.
Interment was in the Resthaven Section of Pinal Cemetery. Arrangements were
under the direction of Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
WILLS
Mae Elizabeth (Smith) Wills, 93, died June 24 [2003] in Tucson. She was born
in Carlsbad, N.M.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Harley N. and Fern Wills; two
grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was conducted June 30 at Globe Cemetery. Adair Funeral Homes
Avalon Chapel of Tucson handled arrangements.
