On December 28, 1835 Major Francis L. Dade died in the battle that began the second Seminole war. The following year a territorial county in southeast Florida was named after him -- Dade County. The county seat was originally Indian Key. Dade County was bordered by the Everglades on the west, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Indian hunting grounds on the south and Lake Okeechobee and Mosquito County on the north.

On March 3, 1845, Florida became the 27th State to join the United States of America.

By 1896, Julia Tuttle's efforts to bring the railroad to Dade County succeeded. The City of Miami was also incorporated that year. In 1910, Dade began losing it's northern territory to new counties and by 1920, the railroad had been extended to the Keys.

The name was changed from Dade to Miami-Dade County in 1997.
