Gulf County FLGenWeb

Gulf County was created in 1925 and was named for the Gulf of Mexico. Wewahitchka, was its first county seat. It is often referred to as the "Home of the Florida Constitution". Delegates from all of Territorial Florida assembled in a constitutional convention in the City of St. Joseph, December 3, 1838 where the drafting and signing of Florida's first constitution occurred. The 1927 Gulf County Courthouse is still in existence.

In 1965 the county seat was moved to Port Saint Joe, formerly named Saint Joseph.

Gulf County covers approximately 578 square miles in the panhandle of Florida. It is bordered by Bay County on the west, Calhoun to the north, Liberty and Franklin to the northeast and east, respectively. To the south border is the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
