LIBRARIES

The main library in Broward County is the Broward County Library System. Broward's library system is the 9th largest library system in the United States. It maintains a main library branch in downtown Fort Lauderdale with a large genealogical department containing census records, newspapers on microfiche/film, and a huge selection of books from many areas of the United States. I will attempt to provide, in the future, a listing of the types of books they have. Off the top of my head, I know that they have the Passenger List series, and many historical books from various states, predominantly the east coast. I will gather more information for this section when I am at the library doing research.

The Genealogical Society of Broward County provides additional information about the Broward County Library system at their website: Libraries.

There are two Family History Centers, which are maintained by the Church of the Latter-Day Saints in Broward County. They are located at:

+ 10148 NW 31st Street, Coral Springs, FL
     + 851 NW 112th Avenue/Old Hiatus Road, Plantation, FL

Broward County was not formed until 1915 from portions of Palm Beach County and Dade County (now Miami-Dade County), much information may be located in those counties. This makes Broward a fairly new county in history, as opposed to other locations.

The Alvin Sherman Library is located on the campus of Nova Southeastern University. It provides a research library which includes the prior holdings of the Genealogical Society of Broward County. The Genealogy Section of Alvin Sherman Library provides a wealth of information. The library's website provides a free 44 page downloadable Genealogy Workbook in pdf format, which contains a start-up guide, various research forms and additional information. Check with the library for this guide. Be sure to check it out if you are new to genealogy research.
