NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS
The following newspaper clipping was found tucked between the pages of this
Bible.
IN MEMORIAM
In sad but loving remembrance of my dear husband Jerry Frank
Smith who departed this life 12 months ago today, May 10, 1918.
Gone but not forgotten.
Nor ever will you be
For as long as life and memory last
I will always remember thee.
I will always think of you, dear one,
And every word you said
When you clasped me to your heart
And bade me farewell.
But I hope to meet my love one
On that bright and happy shore,
The gentle voice now is hushed,
Thy war, true heart is still
And on thy young and innocent brow
Is resting death cold chill.
Darling Frank has left me
Left me, yes forevermore.
Thy hands are clasped upon thy breast
I have kissed thy lovely brow
And in my aching heart I know
I have no darling now.
A precious one from us has gone
A voice I loved is still
A place is vacant in our hearts
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled,
The boon his love has given
And though the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in heaven.
Heaven retaineth new my treasure
Earth the lonely casket keep
And the sunbeams love to linger
Where my sainted husband sleeps.
It is hard, so hard to speak the words
We must forever part,
But little did I think it was so near
The last you clasp me to your heart.
Dearest husband, how I miss you,
Miss you more than heart can tell,
Somewhere in France he is lying
In a quiet lonely grave
Unknown by his fighting mates
Who cheered the cause he died to save
And by his sacrifice the Stars and Stripes still proudly wave
Somewhere in France.
By his loving and devoted wife,
Emma Jane Smith
