Joann Tortarolo writes the following about Nelson J.M. Beatie, the "puzzle in (her) research on the Beatie family.

"1860 Census shows his children:
Warcus 9, Thomas 4, Rebecca 1, Elizabeth 2/12

Apparently his first wife died and he remarried 25 Oct 1881. The marriage license or application shows the following:
Age 54, widowed, born in Washington Co., VA, father - James Beatie, occupation - blacksmith.

He married Eliza Reid, 33, born in Washington Co., father - Andrew Reid. He is not listed as buried in Washington Co. in High on a Windy Hill.

I believe his father, James Beatie, had two wives. Nancy Long (who is Nelson's mother) since shie is listed in guardianship documents for Washington Co, VA. James married Elizabeth McQuown in 1830, in Washington Co. and had four more children: Margaret Montgomery Beatie, Ann O. Beatie, John Beatie, and Mary Elizabeth Beatie. All of these individuals, except Nancy Long, are buried in Rock Springs Cemetery, Washington Co.

When James died in 1847, he seems to have held his land in trust for Nelson who was not yet of majority. Thomas Preston served as Nelson's guardian."

If anyone has any more information on this gentleman, please contact Joann.
