"George McMelon enlisted into the unit known as the Stock Creek Greys until they arrived at Abingdon, July 6th, 1861, and were placed into companies. He is shown as "present" through 10/15/61, re-enlistment leave 2/13/62 to 3/31/62, and then shown AWOL 4/30/62 (which may or may not be true, die to poor record keeping, burned records).
We are certain this is the same person as listed in the 1860 Scott Co. Va. census under the household of Elijah & Elizabeth McMillen, parents, and the age given is 23, bn. Va., farm labor. George wed in/about 1865 an Elizabeth Thompson. Their daughter, Sarah Francis McMillen is grandmother to both Cindy (Hentchel) and myself."
