George Franklin Townsend

1860 Census:
Millwright, Washington Co., age 26.

Enlistment:
Washington Co., age 28, 6/18/61.


Present thru 8/31/61.  Hospital, sick, by 10/15/61 thru 10/31/61.  WIA, left hand, Cedar Run 8/9/62.  Hospital, Charlottesville, 8/11/62 when sent to Lynchburg.  "Duly and unanimously elected' junior 2nd Lt., Co. B 2nd Bn. Va. Cav., 9/20/63.  Applies for discharge 10/8/63 to accept commission.  Remained in 48th Va.  Captured Winchester 9/19/64.  POW Harper's Ferry by 9/23/64 when sent to Point Lookout.  POW there 9/26/64 to 6/20/65 when released on oath.  5'7", light complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes in 1865.  Died near Greendale, Washington Co. 8/15/1902.  Buried there, Tate family cemetery.


Dave Townsend supplies the following information -

"George F. Townsend married Mary Adeline Tate (1840-1928), daughter of John Canady Tate and Nancy Apperson (Vance) Tate about 1858.  George and Mary Townsend had several children, one of whom was my g-g-grandfather, Charles Rolson Townsend (1877-1964)."
