AMISS, THOMAS BENJAMIN; Born July 4, 1839 in Rappahannock County, graduate VMI and University of Pennsylvania. Enlisted as Corporal 4/1/62 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Absent on detached service in Medical Department in Richmond on 5-6/62 roll, his only official record with the regiment. Subsequently surgeon at Salisbury and Weldon, N.C., and with 31st Ga. inf. m. Mary Elizabeth Miller 1881. Physician in Rappahannock and Page Counties, postwar. Died November 9, 1913, buried Green Hill Cemetery, Luray, Page County, Virginia.

ANDERSON, PEYTON L., Jr.; Born July 4, 1837 at Amissville, Rappahannock County. Enlisted April 22, 1861 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry, occupation Farmer. Wounded May 27, 1861 by a pistol shot through his right arm near Fairfax C.H. while On picket. Thereafter absent unfit for service until discharged for disability January 18, 1862. Later served in Co. C of Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry. Noted as the first Confederate soldier to shed his blood, an event commemorated by a small monument at the site. Married Susanna Frances 'Louemma' Miller on February 29, 1876 in Rappahnnock County. Son of Peyton and Sarah S. Anderson. Died January 12, 1914, buried Anderson family cemetery, near Amissville.

ARMSTRONG, SAMUEL RINGGOLD; Born December 10, 1847 in Woodville, Rappahannock County,Virginia. Enlisted in Company E, 43rd Virginia Cavalry on July 28, 1864 for war by John S. Mosby in Upperville. On the July/August muster roll. Attended the 1895 reunion of the 43rd Va. Cavalry in Marshall, the 1905 reunion in Fredericksburg and the 1920 reunion in Culpeper, Va. Lived in Woodville. Married Ella B. Miller on November 14, 1877 in Rappahannock County. Son of William C. and Y. Armstrong. Died June 3, 1923, buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Cemetery, Woodville Virginia.

ARMSTRONG, WILLIAM CLEMINSON; Federal records show him as POW 4/19/64 in Rappahannock County, and a member of Co. B or D, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Held at Old Capitol Prison, and paroled at Point Lookout 1/17/65. Not in Confederate records or postwar rosters. married Sarah Catherine Slaughter. Residence Woodville, Rappahannock County, a wagon maker and farmer.

ATKINS, DEWITT CLINTON; Elisted 11/1/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry, age 24. Harness maker. AWOL from 6/10/62 and POW 7/14/62 while visiting Rappahannock County. At Old Capitol Prison and released about 8/1/62. Under sentence of court-martial on 1-2/63 roll. Deserted to Federals, who made him POW 7/23/63 at New Creek, (W.) Va. Died April 12, 1864 of pneumonia at Camp Chase, Ohio, buried there. Postwar roster says "deserted, accidentally wounded."

ATKINS, GEORGE PEYTON; Born October 13, 1844 in Sperryville. Enlisted 2/20/63 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Absent sick since 8/1/63 on 11-12/63 roll. Reported by Richmond as a deserter on 2/28/65. Present otherwise thru 3/21/65 final roll. Died January 8, 1920, buried family cemetery near Sperryville. married March 12,1868, Mary Washington Myley.

ATKINS, SILAS M.; Enlisted 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry age 19. Saddler, injured shoulder 6/1/61 and sent home. Absent sick since 2/27 on 1-2/62 roll. Severely injured by fall from horse in engagement at Cedarville 5/23/62. Wounded in finger at Fairmont 4/29/63. POW at Sperryville 11/14/63. Paroled at Pt. Lookout 5/3/64. Absent wounded since 1/16/65 on 3/21/65 final roll. Paroled at Winchester 5/9/65. Resident Rappahannock County.

ATKINS, THOMAS V.; Born Rappahannock Coounty, enlisted 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry age 20. Farmer. Discharged 5/23/61 as unfit for service, "having had a wound in his leg unknown at the time of enlistment." enlisted again 2/1/63. Absent sick since 9/1/63 on 11-12/63 and 7-8/64 rolls. AWOL since 1/15/65 on final 3/21/65 roll. On pension application claimed he was shot in the hand, and came home wounded in 1864. Residence near Sperryville, occupation a miller, age 65, on 6/11/06. Still drawing pension in 1923.

BAGGARLY, MARTIN LAFAYETTE; Born: December 29, 1834 in Virginia Farmhand. Residence near Flint Hill, Rappahannock County, when paroled from Co. B 6th Virginia Cavalry at Winchester April 29, 1865, age 30. This is his only official record. Also on postwar roster. Died May 20, 1917, buried Flint Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. BAGGARLY, BALDWIN BRADFORD; Born: March 19, 1825 in Virginia Farmhand. Residence near Flint Hill, Rappahannock County. Enlisted as a private in Company H, 4th Virginia Cavalry, Black Horse Troop. Died: December 11, 1913, buried Flint Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. Married Emma Moore. Son of David C. and Catherine R. Baggarly. Grave photo.

BOTTS, ANDREW TUTT; Born at Woodville, Rappahannock County, enlisted. 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry as Cpl., age 20. Farmer. Absences for Illness, furlough, and detailed service as shoemaker before being wounded 5/11/64 at Yellow Tavern through right arm. Absent wounded to final 3/21/65 roll, when detailed grazing cattle. Died: December 12, 1928 at Woodville. Married Cora Eusebia Miller, December 31, 1870.

BRADY, WILLIAM BARNET; Born abt. 1847 in Rappahannock County, Farmer. Transferred from Co. G, 49th Va. infantry to Co. B. 6th Virginia Cavalry. Only records are Federal, showing POW about 11/6/64 at Front Royal (or Fauquier Co.). Paroled 2/24/65 at Point Lookout, and transferred for exchange. Age 21 on 12/1/61. Died June 12, 1918, buried Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.

BROOKE, ROBERT DAVID; Born in Rappahannock County, enlisted 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry age 36. Farmer. Died suddenly of disease while on picket duty 5/6/62.

BROWN, HENRY CLAY; Born 1841 in Rappahannock County, enlisted 3/1/62 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Home 5/23/62 at Cedarville. On sick leave 12/62. Otherwise present thru 3/21/65 final roll. Reported as deserter by Richmond 2/28/65. Residence Midland, Fauquier Co., on 5/21/15, farmer, claiming two wounds. Died 1923, buried Cedar Grove Cemetery, Bealeton.

BROWN, JOHN S.; Born March 18, 1831, near Sperryville. enlisted 4/18/62 in Co. H, 6th Virginia cavalry, Carpenter. Detailed as wagoneer in brigade for much of his service, and thru 3/22/65 final roll. Resident of Rectortown, Fauquier County, on 6/17/02 and claimed typhoid fever during war. Died July 31, 1904, buried Ivy Hill Cemetery, Upperville.

BROWN, ROBERT WILLIAM; enlisted 9/1/63 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Present thru 3/21/65 final roll. In Chimborazo Hospital No. 1, Richmond, on 3/28/65. Married Elizabeth Thornhill. Farmer in Rappahannock County postwar. Postwar roster gives his middle initial as "C", and says he was 40 when he enlisted.

BROWN, WILLIAM TRAVIS; Born 1833, enlisted 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia cavalry Farmer. AWOL from 6/10/62 until POW 7/14/62 at Sperryville. In Old Capitol Prison and exchanged 8/5/62. Generally present until dropped from the rolls for desertion on 3/21/65 final roll. Died 1908, buried Sperryville Cemetery.

BROWNING, GUSTAVUS JUDSON; Born May 16, 1830 in Rappahannock County, enlisted 5/4/61 in Co. I, 6th Virginia Cavalry as Captain. Ankle broken by fall, 10/5/61 at Culpeper C.H., and at home recovering thru 11-12/61 roll. Dropped 4/20/62. Farmer in Orange postwar. Married Sarah Thomas. House of Delegates 1866-67. BROWNING, WILLIAM S.; Born in Rappahannock County, enlisted 4/22/61 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry as Corporal, age 27. Farmer. Absent sick in Rappahannock County from 8/28/61 thru 9-10/61 roll. To Lieutenant 4/20/62. Present except for occasional leaves until KIA 10/19/64 at Middletown (Battle of Cedar Creek).

BURKE, ROBERT A.; Born in Rappahannock Couny, enlisted 3/1/62 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Absent sick since 1/25/63 on 1-2/63 roll. Provost guard since 10/6/63 on 11-12/63 roll. Absent sick on rolls for 7-10/64. Reported as deserter by Richmond 2/28/65. AWOL since 1/21/65 on final 3/21/65 roll. Wheelwright, age 70, residence Boston, Culpeper Co., 5/3/06. Died September 8, 1908, at Staunton. Wed Roberta, November of 1864.

CARY, ALEXANDER; Born November 23, 1837 Rappahannock County. Private 43rd Virginia Cavalry, Company E, Mosby Command. Enlisted for war by John S. Mosby, July 28, 1864 at Upperville. Present on July-August 1864 muster roll. Paroled April 25, 1865 at Winchester. Age 27, 5'11", fair complexion, light hair, grey eyes. Died April 7, 1911, buried Flint Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. Married Eliza Jane Ricketts November 19, 1867. Son of Hesekiah & Elizabeth Ricketts; Farmer.

DEAR, CHARLES HENRY; Born July 29, 1846 Rappahannock County. Virginia Military Institute 'VMI' Cadet. Joined Mosby's command in early 1863, said to have been the 19th man to join. Enlisted in Company D, 43rd Battalion Mosby's Rangers. Involved in many raids; March 9, 1863 Fairfax Court House; April 1, 1863 Miskel's Farm fight. May 9, 1864 wounded in the side on attack of wagon train between Newtown and Winchester; July 5, 1864 both raids of Point of Rocks Maryland; July 6, 1864 fight at Mt. Zion Church near Aldie.; October 13, 1864 skirmishes along the Valley Pike between Martinsburg and Winchester.; October 14, 1864 "Greenback raid" on the B∓O railroad near Duffields Station Jefferson County, WVa.; October 25, 1864 attack on wagon train and Captain Duffie on Valley Pike between Winchester and Martinsburg.; October 29, 1864 fight at Dulany's near Upperville.; January 30, 1865 attack on Reno's Cavalry camp near Charlestown, Jefferson County, WVa.; February 9, 1865 fight at Mt. Carmel Church, Clarke County.; March 12, 1865 capture of Federal patrol near Munson's Hill in Fairfax County near Washington, D.C.; March 21, 1865 fight at Hampton; March 30, 1865 attack on the block house at Summit Point, Jefferson County, WVa.; April 10, 1865 fight near Arundel's Tavern near Fairfax County. He was wounded 12 times during the war. His mount was called 'Old Thunder' and he rode in Company D's first set of 4's with Ned Gipson and Joe Bryan. He boarded at Llangollen Farm near Upperville, home of ranger Martin Maddux. Paroled in Winchester on May 17, 1865 at the age of 19, 5'11", dark complexion, black hair, grey eyes and a resident of Rappahannock County. He married Ada McGeorge Pierce on November 14, 1883 in Rappahannock County. Son of Amos and Phoebe Miller Dear. Member of the Sons of American Revolution. 1909 employed by IRS in Washington, Virginia. Died in Bronxville, New York. Buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Washington, Rappahannock County, Va.

ELLIOTT, WILLIAM J.; Born 1847 in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Private in Company B, 7th Virginia Infantry. Wounded in the thigh at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Wounded in the head at Seven Pines a wound that affected one eye. Married Elizabeth Virginia Snyder on February 14, 1865 in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Son of Joseph & Ellen Elliott. Died in Rappahannock County in 1927, buried in Sperryville Cemetery.

FINCHAM, BENJAMIN BOOTON; Born March 18, 1846 in Rappahannock County, Va. Private in Company B, 7th Virginia Infantry, enlisted in 1863, served about 18 months. Was sick with Typhoid Fever received a furlough. Also broke and ankle. Occupation farmer. Married Susan Elizabeth Sisk on August 20, 1888 in Rappahannock County. Son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Fincham. Died July 31, 1915 in Rappahannock County, buried in Sperryville Cemetery.

HISLE, LLOYD AYLETTE; Born December 2, 1832 in Rappahannock County. Served in Company B, 3rd Virginia Cavalry. Son of George B. & Rhoda Hisle. Married Miss Mary Louella Rudasile May 19, 1867 in Rappahannock County. Died April 1, 1912. Buried in Sperryville Cemetery.

HITE, CORNELIUS RANDOLPH; Born April 7, 1845 in Frederick County, Virginia. Member of Company H, 4th Virginia Cavalry 'Black Horse Troop', enlisted on March 20, 1863 in Fauquier County. Muster Roll for March and April, 1864 (last on file) shows him absent, prisoner. Union Prisoner of War records show that he was received at Elmira, N.Y. August 12, 1864, from Old Capital Prison, Washington D.C.: captured at Fauquier County, Virginia, February 1, 1864 and released at Elmira, N,Y., June 19, 1865 after having subscribed and sworn to the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Place of residence, Gainesville, Va. complexion, fair; hair, dark; eyes, hazel; and height, 5 ft. 9 in. Son of Hugh Nelson & Ann Randolph Hite. He married Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Caroline Stark on November 3, 1874 in Rappahannock County. His wife, Elizabeth Catherine Hite, received Soldiers pension from Virginia. Died November 17, 1910, buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Woodville.

HUFF, THOMAS HUMPHREY; Was first enlisted in an Infantry Regiment; On September 6, 1864 he enlisted in Company F of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry for war by Walter E. Frankland in Fauquier county. Appears on rolls until October 19, 1864 when he was dropped by order of Colonel Mosby for inefficiency. He then enlisted in Company B, 6th Virginia Cavalry on February 2, 1865. Present on final roll March 21, 1865. Paroled April 9, 1865 at Appomattox with men detailed and hired in QM Dept. of Cavalry Corps. Farmer, age 72, in Rappahannock Co. on April 25, 1916. Son of Theophilus and Mary Huff. Married Eliza Ellen Fogg on November 21, 1875. Died in Rappahannock county August 23, 1817 buried in Masonic Cemetery in Washington, Va. Tombstone photo

JOHNSON, HENRY CLAY; Born July 26, 1835 Rappahannock County. Enlisted March 1, 1863 in Co. B 6th Virginia Cavalry. Absent on scout under LA. Duncan on November/December 1863 roll. AWOL on September/October 1864 roll and on final March 21, 1865 roll. Post war roster says age 30 on enlistment. Married Elizabeth M. Mills on December 10, 1857 in Rappahannock County. Son of William and Mary Johnson. Died April 20, 1916 buried in Sperryville Cemetery.

JONES, ROBERT L.; Born about 1846 in Rappahannock County to Elizabeth A. and John A. Jones. He was a Graduate of Georgetown University. He enlisted in Company E, 49th VA Infantry on July 17, 1861 at Culpeper Court House, Virginia for 12 months. Reenlisted on April 30, 1862 as 3rd Sargent at Yorktown, Virginia, for 2 years of war. Wounded slightly in the arm on May 30, 1862. Omitted to Chimborazo Hospital, No. 1 in Richmond on June 1, 1862 died from wound on July 5, 1862. Burial Unknown. His parents were the superintendents for the county poor house in Rappahannock County, Virginia.

MASSIE, THOMAS BENJAMIN; Born December 15, 1820 near Upperville, Virginia. 7th Virginia Cavalry appointed 1st. Lieutenant, March 27, 1862. Appointed Captain, Company I, 12th Virginia Cavalry, April 25, 1862. Board of officers recommended him as Lieutenant Colonel, 12th Virginia Cavalry, June 16, 1862. Description 1865; age unknown, height 5'11", light complexion., dark hair and gray eyes, a farmer residing in Warren County. Post war member of Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, served 25 years. Son of Thomas & Elizabeth Massie; His second wife was widow Eliza Foushee, daughter of Peyton & Sarah T. Anderson. They were wed on November 24, 1868 in Rappahannock County, Va. He died in Rappahannock County, April 29, 1908 and is buried in the Massie family cemetery.

MILLER ROBERT EMMETT; Born January 2, 1843 at Sperryville. Enlisted on March 1, 1864 in Co. B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Shown on November and December 1863 roll as absent, detailed. Otherwise present until absent buying cattle for brigade on final March 21, 1865 roll. One source gives his middle name as Emmett, another as Edward. May have served previously in Co. B, 7th Virginia Infantry. A postwar roster gives his age on enlistment as 21. Married Elizabeth Rust. Died March 8, 1928, buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Woodville.

PHILLIPS, DINWIDDLE B., DR.; Born June 7, 1826 in fauquier County. General and Staff Officers, Non-Regimental Enlisted Men, CSA. Surgeon. Son of William F. and S.E. Phillips. Married M. F. (Nannie) Walden on February 26, 1857 in Rappahannock County. Died May 5, 1892, buried in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Woodville.

RUDASILL, WILLIAM GALEN: Born August 9, 1842 in Rappahannock County. Enlisted April 22, 1861 in Company B 6th Virginia Cavalry, occupation Farmer. Absent on furlough on January/February 1862 roll. Wounded December 12, 1863 and thereafter absent thru March 21, 1865 final roll. Reported by Richmond as deserter March 1, 1865. Died February 22, 1911 in Rappahannock County, buried Sperryville Cemetery.

RUDASILL, WILLIAM KENLY; Born May 7, 1842 Rappahannock County. enlisted on April 22, 1861 in Company B 6th Virginia Cavalry. Occupation Farmer. Absent sick at hospital on November/December 1862 roll. Absent with leave on September/October 1864 roll. Otherwise always present thru March 21, 1865 final roll. Paroled May 9, 1865 at Winchester, resident of Rappahannock County, Farmer at Sperryville postwar. Married Rachel Scott on January 25, 1872 in Rappahannock County. Son of Philip & Mildred Rudasile. Died June 28, 1825, buried Sperryville Cemetery.

SCOTT, ARMISTEAD; Born July 27, 1843 in Rappahannock County. Conscript Camp Lee Confederate States. Occupation Wheelwright. Married Cora Alice Bruce on August 14, 1871 in Rappahannock County. Son of John and Tabitha Scott. Died July 20, 1927, buried Sperryville Cemetery.

THORNHILL, THOMAS; Born December 22, 1841, Rapphannock County, Virginia. Enlisted in Company C, 4th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. on March 10, 1862, at Madison Court House. On Muster roll for April 1, 1864, (last on file) shows him present, a private. Prisoner of War, records show that he was - Captured February 18, 1865, at Upperville, Virginia, and released May 1, 1865, at Fort McHenry, Maryland, a Private. Oath administered May 1, 1865. Residence; Rappahannock, Virginia. Married Flora Beverly Fristoe on June 17, 1867 in Rappahannock County; Son of Bluford and Lucy Thornhill; Merchant-Retail. Died January 23, 1875 buried in family cemetery, Thornhill Cemetery, on Slate Mills Road.

YATES, CHARLES L.; Born August 17, 1828 Rappahannock County. Served in Company B, 7th Virginia Infantry Confederate States Army. Occupation Farmer. Married Susan M. Bragg on March 12, 1857 in Rappahannock County. Son of Paul and E.S. Yates. Died March 15, 1908, buried in Sperryville Cemetery.

WILLIAMS, WILLIAM JACKSON; Born January 17, 1824 in Culpeper County what is now Rappahannock County. Captain, Co. A-E, 49th Virginia Infantry; physician. Enlisted April 4, 1861 for 1 year, elected Captain at inception. Absent, sick 8/31/61, present 10/31/61; present 12/31/61; detailed to serve on court-martial board during 1/62; present through 4/62; not re-elected at Company reorganization of 4/30/62 and was dropped. He later served 2nd corps as surgeon. Died April 5, 1905, buried Flint Hill Methodist Church Cemetery. Married Adeline Chappelear.

WOOD, JAMES MADISON; Born August 17, 1840 Rappahannock County. Enlisted on April 22, 1861 in Company B, 6th Virginia Cavalry. Occupation Farmer. Wounded and horse "lost" May 23, 1862 at Cedarville. Absent from wound until present on January/February 1863 roll. On detached service at bridge near Mt. Crawford March 20-March 31, 1863. Otherwise present until detailed buying cattle on final roll March 21, 1865 . Paroled May 10, 1865 at Winchester. Farmer, on Rappahannock Board of Supervisors postwar, resident of Oak Hill. Married Anna Eliza Bragg on April 8, 1868 in Rappahannock County. Son of John H. & Lucy Wood. Died July 4, 1924, buried Sperryville Cemetery.
