Will of George W. Cox, Sr. 1844 *

Lunenburg County, Virginia

Approximately 1844

I, George W. Cox of the County of Lunenburg and State of Virginia do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament of following to Wit.

1st, I desire that my tract of land purchased of Malcom MacFarland containing two hundred and forty acres to be sold for the payments of my just debts.

2nd, I will and desire that all the balance of my property and interest I have in the Estate held by my mother during her life - also the balance of proceeds from "Sale of my Land before mentioned" to be equally divided on the following conditions between my two children James Ivy Cox and George Washington Cox. That is to say if Mrs. Catherine Hardy, their grandmother, should make an equal proportion for both of my children. Then I wish the above named equal division also to be made equal between them. But should the before said Catherine Hardy give a large portion of her estate to my son James Ivy, then to my son George Washington, then my will and desire is that the whole of my estate of every kind and description be given to my son George Washington Cox for the sum of twenty dollars which I give to my son James Ivy Cox.

3rd, I appoint Washington Maddra executor of this my last will and testament given under my hand.

Additional note: Malcolm MacFarland, mentioned in this will, represented Lunenburg in legislature 1820-1830. Rev. Malcolm MacFarland was married in Richmond, VA to Mary E. Tompkins. He died Dec. 15, 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was an Episcopal clergyman.
