Bob Long. I and several other folks are together researching several lines of the surname LONG, who initially came out of PA during the early 1700s into VA and crop-up there for a couple of generations between Louisa, Loudoun, Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties before heading west into KY, TN, AR and MO. Several were preachers. They all appear to be related.
However, one entry ostensibly taken from "Abstracts of Wills, Inventories and Administration Accounts of Loudoun County, VA - 1757-1800" by J. Estelle Stewart King - cites a:
"LONG, Thomas - 7 Oct, 1764, 11 March 1765, pg. 5 Late of Lartford County, New England, Estate to friend James LONG (Loudoun County) Exr: James LONG (page 122)"
MY QUESTIONS:
1. Can someone translate for me precisely how the dates apply?
2. What is meant by and where is Lartford (possibly Hartford) County New England? This geographical reference has several of us baffled.
Regards, Bob Long bubbapi@amanet.net

By 1820 this family was in Belmont COunty, Ohio and is listed in the census. I would like to know about their time in Louden COunty. Several of the children died in infancy and should be buried there. ANy leads would be helpful. I can't even get a copy of the 1790 or 1800 census for Virginia here in Maryland, so I don't know if they are in that. Also, I have been told that Card is an old Virginia family. Were there Cards in Louden County at this time? I have no clues as to Mary Card's ancestors.

Chuck McKeown. I am researching the Lander Family that lived in Hampshire and Loudoun Counties from about 1725 to about 1780. William Lander, born in Saxony, I believe emmigrated first to Salem, Mass., then to Loudoun County, VA before 1725. He was a tailor. William's son Henry Lander was born about 1725 in Loudoun County, married Hannah Skinner about 1753. They may have moved to Hampshire County, as their son Charles was born there on Dec 9, 1754. Charles Lander entered the Revolutionary War from Loudoun County in October 1775 as a sargent in Captain Charles West's Company, Colonel Weldon and Thomas Marshall's Virginia Regiment.
