"Noted local historyian and author Nancy Binford Chappelear Baird died Nov. 4 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. She was 83. The daughter of Mr.and George W. Chappelear (sic), Mrs. Baird was born in Harrisonburg, where her father was the head of the biology department at Madison College. Mrs. Baird grew up on the Chappelear family farm near Marshall, and at Belle Grove, the home of her uncle, noted Virginia historian and author, Benjamin Curtis Chappelear. Curtis Chappelear was the son of Armistead and Amanda Virginia Edwards Chappelear, and through family connections and her own interest, Mrs. Bair soon became involved in the primary study of local history. Mrs. Baird graduated from Madison College in 1940, earning a bachelor's degree in education (mathematics major and art history). She also studied architectural engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and was a naval architect in the U. S. Navy. Nancy Chappelear married Alvin Vorhis Baird, Jr. in 1966 and they later made their home in the Delaplane area. Like Nancy, Alvin Baird came from a family steeped in local history. His parents owned Oak Hill, the home of Chief Justice John Marshall from 1914 until their deaths in 1965. Alvin Sr. was regarded for many years as an expert on Virginia and Civil War history. Although they came from similar backgrounds, they had two distinctly different personalities. She once described the differences as "Alvin is a ballroom dancer and I'm an old square dancer." Both Mr. and Mrs. Baird became active with the Fauquier Historical Society in the early 1980s. Mrs. Baird served as a docent in the Old Jail Museum for years, as was a director from 1987-92. She served on the Awards and Hospitality Committee for a number of years after stepping down from the Historical Society board. She also pursued historic research on her own, publishing Fauquier County, Va. Tombstone Inscriptions in 1970, and an updated, two-volume edition of Tombstone Inscriptions with Carol Jordan in 1994. In 1984, she edited and published the diary of her ancestor in the Journals of Amanda Virginia Edmonds: Lass of the Confederacy. Mr. and Mrs. Baird lived next tothe Cool Spring Methodist Church where one of her grandfathers had been a trustee and she often gave tours of the historic old church and cemetery. Her devotion to history was appreciated by her neighbors, and television personality Willard Scottonce had her on the Today show to give a "quick but detailed history of Paris, Va." Mrs. Baird was active with the Fauquier Mental Health Association, where she worked on all levels from arranging for clothes to be made for patients at Western State Hospital, to advocating for increased mental health funding at the General Assembly. 'She had a purity of purpose that inspired us,' recalled Joanne Lyons of Amisville, who worked with her for the Fauquier Mental Health Association. Mrs. and Mrs. Baird have generously supported many other causes, endowing the Fauquier Historical Society with a trust, as well as the Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia, and the Attention and Learning Disabilities Center at James Madison University. In 1997, the Bairds moved from Delaplane to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Baird is survived by her husband, Alvin V. Baird, Jr., of Harrisonburg; her sister, Georgina Milliken of Goucester; a nephew, William Milliken of High Point, N.C.; a niece, Nancy McAvoy of Princeton, N.J.; and her goddaughter, Diane Curling of Reston. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Delaplane, followed by interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 3189, Warrenton, VA 20188, or Central Valley Habitat for Humanity, 205 Dry River Road, Bridgewater, VA 22812, in memory of Nancy C. Baird." CHAPPELEAR, B. Eugene Scheel Survey History Mapmaking Articles written for the Washington Post SPARACIO, Sam Sam Sparacio of The Antient Press died of cardiac arrest on the 13th of August 2000. He and his wife Ruth abstracted so many of the colonial Virginia records that we all use. He will surely be missed by all! Sam Sparacio must be listed here as a result of his huge contribution to our Family History Community. SWEM, Earl Gregg An American historian, bibliographer and librarian. Swem worked at the Library of Congress and Virginia State Library, and for more than two decades was primary librarian at the College of William & Mary, where the Earl Gregg Swem Library was named in his honor.
