The above picture (19inches x 10 inches), done in pastels, is signed by M Williams (Martha Drucilla Bouldin Williams) of a Bouldin homeplace in Virginia. “Woodland” is written at the center bottom of the picture. She has also written a note on the back of the linen-like canvas stating:

Woodland, Charlotte County Va.
Founded by Wm Watkins Bouldin and his wife
Angelina Morgan about the year 1839.

See image of letter written by Sarah Bouldin (d/o W. W. & Angelina Bouldin) to her brother William Dennis Bouldin during the Civil War. The letter is headed "Woodland, Va." Names mentioned in the letter:

Charles Bedford Bouldin (unmarried d.1911)  was the last of the family to live at Woodland. A sister wrote, "He loved it as he did his life."

In Dec.1919 Alma Bouldin wrote: "There is still one acre of land belonging to the estate that has not been sold. It is the Tabernacle church lot, which was deeded so as to revert to the family when it ceased to be used for church." (It is not known here when the Woodland ceased to stand.)


Family Cemetery: A family letter in possession of Frances McGowan shows that in 1900 Martha Bouldin Williams represented the family in making arrangements for the monuments at the Wm. Watkins Bouldin Cemetery in Charlotte County. See photos of the cemetery made by Ms. McGowan.
