John Lee Senr>Edward Lee>George "Henderson" Lee>Ann "Adele" Lee
- Submitted by JoLee Gregory Spears

Undated paper of Ann "Adele" (Lee) Dillard. page 1, page 2, found in the old papers of two of her Gregory cousins in Lunenburg Co., VA.
Background: Adele was b. 1844, Lunenburg Co., VA., the year after the death of her grandfather, Edward Lee. Her family moved to Petersburg, VA when she was 2 or 3 yrs old. Her mother died when she was ten yrs. old. The family returned to Lunenburg and Adele's younger siblings lived at the Josephus Gregory home. Mrs. Gregory was a sister of Adele's father. Adele probably attended boarding school preparing to teach. In 1861, her father died while serving in the Confederate Army, and she was teaching in Henry Co., VA; married John R. Dillard and lived in Martinsville, VA. Throughout her life, Adele kept in touch with her Gregory cousins in Lunenburg.
Comment: Adele's grandfather Edward Lee was born 01 May 1779, see Lee/Gregory Bible transcription, so would not have served in the Revolution. He was called "Capt. Lee" [Gregory Family Correspondence], and appears to have obtained the title from service in the Charlotte County militia. Edward Lee appears as Lieutenant in the Charlotte Co., VA militia in 1812, and as Captain in 1821. [Timothy S. Ailsworth, comp., Charlotte County - Rich Indeed (Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, 1979), pp. 471,472.]
