1 John
1 LEE, Senr. d: 1804/1805 in Charlotte Co., VA (
will)
Parents of John Lee Senior (d. 1804/1805) have not been identified. Reports that he was the son of William LEA (wife Rachel) who died 1770 in Amelia Co., VA are disproved.1
Researching the wife of John Lee Senr: A spouse was not named in his will made 27 Nov 1804. None of the deeds of John Lee in Charlotte County show a wife relinquishing dower interests.
The only found record naming a wife of John Lee Senr is the death record of son Thomas Lee:
Charlotte County Death Register, line 77, November, 1865, "Thomas Lee, age 88, old age, birthplace Charlotte County, parents Betsy and John Lee, wife and informant, Elizabeth Lee" — indicating in 1777 spouse of John Lee Senr was Betsy __?__. (See image)
No source has been found to support tradition that the wife of John Lee Senr was "Jane (nee) Henderson." (Such record would be most welcomed.)
The known introduction of the given name "Henderson" into this Lee line was Henderson Lee, son of Ambrose, son of John Lee Senr. The Rev. Henderson Lee family continued use of the name. In the next generation, Edward Lee (brother of Ambrose) named a son "George Henderson Lee" who was called "Henderson." Subsequently, Edward Lee, Jr. named a son "George Henderson Lee." Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Lee-Gregory (dau. of Edward Lee Sr)named a son "William Henderson Lee," who went by "William," sometimes "William Henderson." Whether it was a case of a son being named after his uncle (after the 1st one), or parents honoring a now unknown ancestor, is the question.
See, further on, a discussion of name "Henderson" at the article of John Lee Senior's son Ambrose Lee.
In Dec 1780, "Jane Lee" and "John Lee" witnessed the will in Charlotte County of neighbor John Haley Senr, possibly suggesting Jane Lee was wife of John Lee. 2 John Lee had a daughter Jane, but it is not determined if she was of age in 1780 to have witnessed the will. It is unlikely as 1810 and 1820 censuses indicate she was born 1766-1775
The inventory of John Lee deceased reflected the average farm of the county except in the field of horse breeding. He owned a stud and several mares along with three colts at his death.3 In 1800 John Lee was taxed in the District of Stephen Bedford with 4 white male tithables,7 horses, 2 slaves over eighteen, and 1 stud horse. |

Further evidence that Ambrose Lee was of this family and was deceased before John Lee Senr made his will in November 1804:
7 Sept. 1795 Charlotte Co., Va. Order Bk 10:93, John White and John Lee presented surety to be administrators of estate of Ambrose Lee. Thomas Pettus, Joseph Pearson, Blankenship and Ambrose Haley were ordered to appraise Ambrose Lee's estate.
The following shows Ambrose Lee lived in Charlotte County, at his own house, though no deed record is found:

"A court held for the examination of Richard Pearl, who stands charged with feloniously entering the dwelling house of Ambrose Lee on Tuesday the 2nd day of this instance, and taking thereof, a blue broad clothe cloak, three pairs of breeches, one linen shirt & silver sleeved buttons, two pairs of stockings, one pair of shoes and buckles, 18 shilling and one woman's hat, also breaking and entering the night of the 10th of this instance, the meal house of James Hamblett and taking thereof, a quantity of Meat, Meal and Soap. (The court subsequently finds the prisoner Guilty in the form and manner as alleged, and he is remanded to the jail of Prince Edward country for trial at District Court. The following depositions are recorded.)
Depositions:
Ambrose Lee, before the court, on oath saith that on Tuesday, the second day of July of the present year, his house was robed(sic) between the hours of twelve o'clock and sunset of the same day, of a blue broad clothe cloak, three pairs of breeches, one linen shirt & silver sleeve buttons, two pairs of stockings, one pair of shoes and buckles, three silver dollars, one woman's hat, one razor and case and a pair of knee buckles, which goods were delivered to him at James Hamblett's, said to be taken from the prisoner, except the three dollars, which were delivered to him by the prisoner himself, when in the custody of several persons..." ". . . of this present month in the morning, and was informed by the sd Hamblett, that his meal house was broken open the night before, and the said Hamblett requested the deponent to assist him in pursuing the thief, which he did in the accompany(sic) with several others. After pursuing with dogs some distance, he with the company, came upon the prisoner, and found in his possession a blue broad cloth cloak, three pairs of breeches, one linen shirt and silver sleeve buttons, two pairs of stockings, one pair of shoes and buckles, one woman's hat, a case and razor. Which articles were claimed by Ambrose Lee as his property. Some little time before the company overtook the prisoner, they found a pair of saddle bags, a joynt(sic) of bacon & a tin coffee pot, and a wallet of Flower(sic). The prisoner being asked by some persons present, for the tools he made use of in breaking open the meal house, he answered 'They were in the wallet which contained the bacon and flower'. Further this deponent saith not."6
Ambrose Lee and wife, Elizabeth, named their only child, Henderson. It has been rumored through generations that there was a "Henderson" family connection through the mother of Ambrose Lee. It appears there could have been such a connection through the wife of Ambrose Lee. It is noted that Elizabeth White (wife of Ambrose Lee) had a sister with the middle name Henderson and a brother with the birth name Henderson. The 1796/1797 will of Elizabeth's father, John White, mentions wife: Franny White; Sons: Elisha White, James White, Elijah White, Henderson White & Carter White; Daus: Mary Henderson, Elizabeth White, Rebecca White; Sons: John White. [Bell, Lun. Co., VA. Wills 1746-1825 (1972) #518] Acct Current of estate of John White dec'd beginning 19 Mar 1797, mentions among numerous names: John Lee (twice); Wm. The Reverend Henderson Lee was a Presbyterian Minister who resided in the Hounds Creek area of Lunenburg. Rev. Lee and his wife reared a large family at their home, Lee Hall. (Correction 11-24-03: Lee Hall was in the Crooked Creek area. Henderson Lee purchased the Lee Hall tract on Crooked Creek in January 1842, from Alexander Cralle and wife, Mary E. At the time of the purchase, Rev. Henderson Lee was shown to be living on land on the waters of Big Hounds Creek. [LDB 32:347,348])
The Reverend Lee preached at Bethany, Nutbush Church, Bluestone, Hat Creek, Union S.S. Chestnut and Rockfish.7 Earlier, Henderson Lee served as pastor of Chaney Church and Old Court House Church in Charlotte County.8
On a list of ministers in Charlotte County, Henderson Lee is shown as "Republican Methodist" in 1818.9 Charlotte County - Rich Indeed: "Little is known about the Republican Methodists. Although they were Methodist in doctrine, they followed the Presbyterian form of government. From all indications it seems they were too small to survive as a separate denomination."10
As a young man, Henderson Lee served in the War of 1812 from Mecklenburg Co., VA.11
The Death Register of Lunenburg Co., VA shows: Henderson Lee d. 21 Oct _____ of unknown cause, age 69, son of A & E Lee, born Charlotte County, minister, wife Susan Lee, info by wife.

John Lee's will dated 15 Dec 1856 was probated 5 Jan 1857 in Marshall Co., TN. He directed that the land on which he resided "in Williamson and Marshall counties" be sold and all personal property except Negro man, Bob. Balance of slaves - Sarah, Margret, Caroline, Tennessee, Albert and Susan - their value being taken into account - be allotted to the children.12
One of the earliest references to this John Lee is probably the "J. Lee jr" on a list of subscribers 1797 for repairing the Meetinghouse. The Meherrin Meetinghouse, or Church, was in Lunenburg County in the immediate neighborhood (map)of the Lee family in Charlotte County, near the county line. Other names on the list of subscribers are typical of the family names we see around the Lee family, such as: Haley, Ellington, Johnson, Thompson, Almond, White, Eubank, etc. (The Almond was "H. Almond," likely Hezekiah Allmond who had become John Lee's bro-in-law the year before.)13 Hezekiah appears in the minutes as a member of the church.
The line of John Lee Junior is carried forward.
Evidence that this is the same John Lee:
The marriage date, 23 Feb 1812, of John Lee and Frances in their son's bible is compatible with the recorded marriage bond, 11 Feb 1812, of John Lee to Frances Webb (widow) in Charlotte Co., VA. We know that John Lee Junr was in Tennessee in 1845 (or 1847) when his nephew Edward Lee, Jr in Pickens Co., AL wrote that he was in Tennessee the summer before and "our old uncle John Lee wanted me to move up there."14

"Genealogical Notes:
Hezekiah Allmond -- A Maury Co. pioneer, having arrived in Tennessee in 1806. He was born in Virginia in 1769 and married [2nd/jgs] Frances Smith, on 1 Jan 1828. He acquired 300 acres of land from Samuel, the father of Pres. James K. Polk, and this became the family homestead. Portions of the farm are still occupied by descendants of this pioneer. When Interstate 65 was built, it cut through the property and the Lasea Overpass is close to the site of the old home site. Hezekiah and wife were members of the Primitive Baptist Church and he donated an acres of land for the building of Flat Creek P.B. Church in 1840.
"W. T. Allmond--[note: child by 2nd marriage of Hezekiah Allmond/jgs] Born near Lasea in 1831 was son of Hezekiah and Frances Smith Allmond. He married Susan Frances, dau. of Squire David and Mary Bostick Fogleman. Their children were: Margaret, Laura F., Lou and Maud?. Mr. Allmond served his county as magistrate and was the Collector of Internal Revenue under President U. S. Grant for some time. He died in 1914 at the age of 83 years.
"Edward Franklin Lee--Son of William & Elizabeth Allmond Lee and born in Maury Co., Tn. in 1828, E. F. Lee lived to the great old age of 101, dying in 1930. He was one of Maury County's last living veterans of the Civil War. He was a Captain in Company L, 38th Tenn. Inf." [note: E.
