Brief History of Otoe County, Nebraska
Otoe County
is located in southeastern Nebraska, bordered by the Missouri
River and neighboring Iowa and Missouri. Established in 1854
and named after the Otoe tribe, the county features gently
rolling hills and fertile farmland ideal for crops like corn,
soybeans, wheat, and fruit orchards. Its county seat, Nebraska
City, is known as the birthplace of Arbor Day and a
historic hub for river trade. With a population of around
15,900, Otoe County blends rich agricultural heritage with
deep historical roots, making it a vital part of Nebraska’s
early settlement story.
