THE RAILROAD COMES TO TOWN
The Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroads reached Battle Creek in 1879. The coming of the railroad is a matter of record to Madison County. Lots in Battle Creek which at the time were railroad property to wit:
A Mortgage $340,000.00 dated August 13, 1879, given by the Fremont Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad Co. to Dewitt C. Blair and David B. Kimball, Trustees acknowledged before Charles E. Eddy, Notary Public Suffolk County Mass. 'for extension of the Railroad . . . part now constructed and to be constructed from the present terminous of said railroad at Wisner, Cuming County, Nebraska, westerly up the Elkhorn Valley through the counties of Stanton and Madison to Battle Creek, a distance of about 39 miles in said last named County, etc.'"
THE BATTLE CREEK ENTERPRISE IS FOUNDED
The Battle Creek Enterprise was founded in 1887. Volume I was dated April 20, 1887. A review of articles found therein are as follows: The founder was D. W. Bryan, editor and publisher. Robert D. Scott, Ed Scott's father, who had come from Virginia, was foreman and printer's devil. A short time later, Mr. Scott purchased the paper and published it until his death on September 7, 1900. The obituary for Mr. Scott was published on September 14, 1900. "Mr. Scott was married to Miss Lily M. Brecheisen on October 27, 1889. Survivors include the widow, children Bar-
