HOLT COUNTY OBITUARIES

You may submit your Holt County Obituaries for posting to this page. We can only post obituaries that are older than 1932, or where you have written permission from the newspaper to reprint/post them. You may submit an 'extract' for an obituary for current obituaries. Thank you for following these guidelines. Submit your obituaries to the State Coordinator.

"These are from the Rouse History that Mrs Riser and I compiled. She had a lot of the newsclippings cut out of the newspaper. That's why no name of the paper or date on some of these. She is currently in the O'Neill nursing Home." - Doris Counts

Although the obituaries listed here are from Holt County newspapers, the actual deaths and/or burials may have been in other counties or states.

Aberdeen SD Daily News

The funeral of Mrs Mary C Bates was held yesterday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs A S Reed on North Main Street, many friends attending the services.

A profusion of beautiful flowers gave silent expression of the love and esteem of all those who had known Mrs Bates and learned of her sweet and worthy character. Brodie, Wilson
June 25,1908, Stuart Advocate

Wilson Brodie was bornOct 18,1835 in North Chilli, Monroe County, NY. His father was a Scotchman and English woman, It was from such ancestry he took many of those strong and sterling qualities which have always marked his life. At 21 years of age he was married to Miss Hannah Amelia Longmuir, who died in 1896.Eight children resulted from this union, all of whom are living.

In 1863 Mr Brodie moved with his family from NY state to Oakland County, Mich, where he resided for 16 years. It was here he took a decided stand for Christ and immediately became active in Church and Sunday School work in Pontiac. It was here also that he became interested in the temperance movement and all other Christian reforms.

In 1880 he moved from Michigan to Holt County, Nebr, where he was foremost in organizing the Cleveland Presbyterian Church. He has served as an elder during its entire history, and for many years acted as superintendent and teacher in the Sunday school, having an interest in religious work which grew with each passing year of his life.

On March 12,1902, after 7 years of loneliness, he was married to Mrs Rosalie A Cleveland.

He has served the county as supervisor, and the people of this district in various public capacities, taking an active interest in the welfare of the public school.

He longed to live to see the cause of prohibition ruling throughout the land and the final completion of the little church he had done so much to help. These were the two great desires of his heart. It is safe to say that no one has done more than he in the giving of time, energy, money for so many years for the care and development of this church. Likewise there are few who have watched the growth of the temperance movement with more prayerful attention, being ready at all times to sacrifice time and effort for its promotion.

There were present from abroad Ernest Cleveland from Chicago, Illinois, Burton Brodie and wife and two children from Ewing, Mrs Francis Spencer and John Brodie of Neligh.

The church was unable to accommodate those who attended the farewell service and all realized that he had lost a good friend.

His sickness began about three years ago, manifesting itself by his loss of appetite and physical weakness and ended in his death at Lincoln sanitarium last Saturday morning. The funeral occurred at the Cleveland Church Tuesday morning, his pastor, the Rev Samuel Light officiating.

Brown, A G

MURDER NEAR NELIGH

A G Brown, a harness maker in the little town of Brunswick, near Neligh, was brutally murdered on Monday or Tuesday of last week, by having his skull crushed with an ax, in the parlor of his own home. The crime was not discovered until the last of the week, when his neighbors, noticing that his place of business remained closed, broke into his home (he was a bachelor and lived alone.) They discovered blood stains on the carpet and furniture of the front room, but no signs of the body until they reached the cellar, where the body was found along with the ax with which he had been killed.

Joe McKay, a man who bears a hard reputation in that community, has been arrested for the crime, and it appears that evidence is rapidly accumulating that he is the murder. Public feeling runs high, as the murdered man was of a quiet, unassuming disposition and had many friends who are bound to see that his horrible death is avenged.

M F Harrington has been retained to help prosecute the prisoner, and A O Williams will defend.

FAMOUS BLIZZARD OF JAN 12,1888

The mother-in-law of Harry Faust of Stuart, and his two little children, aged 11 months and 5 years respectively. Mrs Chapman and the children were coming to Stuart the morning of the storm in a sleigh and when it began to blow were away from the house, and they perished in the cold. They were brought to town just as found and an eye witness informs us that it was a most heartrending scene. The funeral took place Tuesday. To the bereaved father and mother the Frontier extends its heartfelt sympathy.

LEWIS JONAS SUICIDES

Lewis Jonas, the 19 year old son of George Jonas of Green Valley committed suicide last Thursday morning.

He was working on the J F Hale ranch northeast of town and last Wednesday evening, after taking a bath with several others in a nearby pond, they all returned to the house. Shortly after this he was missed; an organized search was made by scouring the nearby country and dragging the pond and deep hole in the Eagle Creek, but no trace of him could be found until Monday when he was discovered by Mesdames Tesch and Alfs, suspended by a bailing wire attached to a rafter in the coal shed at the Tesch school house which is about four miles from the Hale ranch. The sheriff and coronor were notified and found he had committed the act while mentally deranged.

His remains were brought to Atkinson Tuesday, and laid at rest in the Catholic Cemetery.

THE BIG BLIZZARD OF JAN 12,1888

The same evening we learned of the death of Thomas Kellar, better known as Uncle Tommy, brother of J B Kellar, Shamrock. He was out the morning of the storm hauling hay for the cattle and when the storm struck him had a load on the wagon and started for the house. Just how he was lost will never be known, but it is probable that he became bewildered and could not find the way with the team and tried to go to the house near where he was hauling hay, but could not find it. He was found next day after the storm only about 30 rods from the house (that of Mr Dougherty's, east of Mr Kellar's). Mr J S Kellar was in O'Neill during the storm and went home on Friday. The funeral services took place on Tuesday at the house. Mr Kellar was one of those exceptionally good men, the friend of all and universally beloved. He was about 70 years of age, and had always lived the life of an earnest devout christian, and his friends have the consolation in his death that the parting will not be forever. He leaves no family, having never been married, but a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his sad, sudden demise.

FAMOUS BLIZZARD OF JAN 12,1888

An hour or two before the wind changed several parties living near Goose Lake left Ewing for home. They made the sand hills about 7 miles west of twon just as the storm struck them in full fury. Here is a stretch of country of 5 or 6 miles without a house in sight. There were several men and teams in the party, and a Mrs Joe Miller and two children. When overtaken by the storm the team that carried the woman and children were tied to the preceding wagon, but became frightened and broke loose. With this the teams became separated and the party likewise, for it was impossible for them to find one another after getting three rods apart. All night and until 9 o'clock the next morning they were out on the prairie before assistance came to their relief, and when it did the little boy, about 12 years of age, was frozen to death, and the mother's feet were so badly frozen that it is said that they may have to be aputated. The other child-a little girl - escaped without being frozen. Sunday morning the boy was brought to Ewing to be layed out and his remains now lie at Mr French's undertaking rooms waiting relatives from Columbus. The mother is being tenderly cared for at the farm of W McKee, 9 miles southwest of this place. The boy's name was Frank Metz. He was his mother's child by her first husband.

DOUBLE TRAGEDY

Last Saturday, Eric Borg, a prosperous farmer living north of O'Neill, was shot near the heart by John Price, his hired man. It was first thought that Mr Borg was fatally hurt but there now appears a chance for his recovery. After the shooting, Mr Price disappeared but was pursued by a posse which quickly formed and started after him, determined on his capture. They followed him about 3 miles to an old sod building which they found he had entered and killed himself by a well directed shot through the head. The explanation of Price's rash act is given by saying "He Drank".

FAMOUS BLIZZARD OF JAN 12,1888

Miss Etta Shattuck, a young lady 18 years old, who had been teaching school in district No, 141, 9 miles southwest of O'Neill. She was not teaching that day, having recently closed her school, but had gone to the home of J M Parkins to get her order signed. Attending to her errand, she started for her boarding house when the storm came up and she soon got lost, wandering for some time until she found a friendly hay stack, into which she worked her way and layed down determined to make the best of it. She remained in the stack for 74 hours before being found, from Thursday to Sunday, conscious all the time of her surroundings, and yet not able to extricate herself. She sang and prayed to keep up her courage. A cayote came about the stack and howled and a friendly mouse nibbled her wrist, of which she was conscious but could not hinder. When found her limbs were frozen to her knees and fears are entertained that she will loose her feet or toes.
