About the Grand Island Tax List
On Tuesday, January 6, 1920 the Grand Island Daily Independent published a list of those residents of Grand Island who were obliged to file income tax returns for the year 1918. "It is not indicated that all of these are compelled to pay income taxes or that all did pay income taxes last year. It is, however, evidently, the list of those persons from whom the government demands returns."
Also: "The repetition of names in the list, which is published exactly as submitted by the treasury department, is explained by the possibility that the same persons or firm might have a capital stock tax or an excess war profit tax in addition to his regular income tax."
