"Greater Omaha Genealogical Society [GOGS] has a book done several years ago with cemetery records from outside the city of Omaha. Most of the Omaha cemeteries haven't given permission to have the stones read. GOGS members will go in and find the stones (if any) and send transcriptions on request for a nominal fee ($10/hr plus copy costs).... [Also, they can check] for obits as there's quite a collection of historical Douglas county newspapers at the library. However, they need a date, as they're not all indexed yet--volunteers ARE working on it, though it is a slow tedious process." Karen wrote in NEDougla-L

Note: "I want to add regarding the Jewish cemeteries, in the Omaha area,: the records are not at the cemeteries themselves.  They're at the various synagogues.   Evidently the Jewish Community Center does not have a copy of who's buried where either.  I just recently was looking for someone, having no dates, to check an obit, and it took several phone calls to locate the correct cemetery.  The cemeteries haven't been read by anybody that I'm aware of."  Karen <OmahaMom@aol.com> 8.2.2001 NEDougla-L member
