ELK CITY CEMETERY aka Elkhorn City Cemetery
Douglas County, Nebraska

Compiled by Mrs. Georgene Morris Sones, Omaha, Douglas Co. NE

Part 2

In continuing my quest for information on burials in the "Present" Elk City Cemetery I have been fortunate in getting information from a variety of sources: newspaper abstracts, court records, correspondence, early Record of Assessments, family scrapbook containing newspaper clippings (many undated), family records and burial permits (state and county usually issued 2 days after death date). This information was then compared to NEBRASKA DOUGLAS COUNTY CEMETERIES, A recording of all rural Douglas County, Nebraska, cemeteries. The 275 page book was published in 1981 by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society from information gathered in 1975.

The burial data that I found was compared with the above mentioned cemetery book and this additional data will be shown as GOGS.

I was told in the early 1980s by the custodian of the Elk City Cemetery records that the early records were poorly kept. It was from the Record of Assessments in the custodian's possession that I copied the data pertaining to the lot owners as it appeared - with names and addresses crossed out - and with later additions of names and addresses.

Spelling of the names and locations was retained.

Elk City was aka Elkhorn City.

Miscellaneous Newspaper Abstracts from various newspapers

Compiled by: Mrs. Georgene Morris Sones

The obits were compared to the tombstone readings which began in the late 1970s by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society. The recording of the rural Douglas County cemeteries was published in 1981 by the Society in Nebraska. Douglas County Cemeteries. This information will be shown as: (GOGS).

The obits often referred to the burial location with cemetery names which differ from those used today, such as: Valley Cemetery: aka Byars/Byers; Mercer

Old Elkhorn Cemetery: aka Old Britton/Brittain, Spring Grove
(John BRITTON & wife deeded land to Elkhorn Cemetery Association on 8 April 1871.)

?Donnelly Cemetery - another name for Mt. Calvary Cemetery?

Stiner Cemetery: unknown location

Prospect Hill Cemetery: aka Elkhorn

Flower Hill Cemetery: aka German Lutheran, Bennington

Mt. Auburn Cemetery: Was this ever known as Plambeck?

Britton Cemetery was nearly always spelled "Brittain" in the newspapers.
Spelling of the names and locations as it appeared in the newspapers was retained.
Some of this information may be a duplication of the data already on the Douglas Co. Nebraska Web page.  A special THANK YOU to Ralph Wilson for his assistance.

ELK CITY CEMETERIES aka Elkhorn City Cemeteries
Past and Present
Located in Western Douglas County, Nebraska

This historical information prepared by Mrs. Georgene Morris Sones, Omaha, Douglas Co. NE

I have a personal interest in these cemetery locations and for many years have gathered additional information regarding those interred in the two sites. Information has come from newspaper abstracts, scrapbooks, family records, courthouse records, and correspondents. But in particular the greatest source of information has come from my friend, Ralph C. WILSON, of Waterloo, to whom I extend my personal thanks for his assistance and friendship.  I also thank the many other who contributed information

The "Original" cemetery location was in S11 T16N R10E. This site is on private land and permission must be obtained to enter the premises. I have been told that when the Mormons left Winter Quarters in the Florence area, many of them died and were buried in a common grave near or at the site of this original cemetery; however, I have no information regarding these Mormon burials. The location is south across a field from the "Present" cemetery. A search there some years ago did not reveal any tombstones; however, I was told several stones had been removed, and supposedly one stone remains which is buried.   In several places the earth indicated definite depressions, remnants of broken stones were found and lily plants were abundant. Several bodies were moved from the original cemetery and reburied in the "Present" cemetery.

John BRITTON & wife deeded land to Elkhorn Cemetery Association on 8 April 1871.

Thomas WILKINSON purchased this land in 1881 from Sophia LOWE. On 1 April 1884, Thomas WILKINSON and wife Lucy S. sold this parcel of land to William C. AINSWORTH.

The "Present" cemetery location: 840 ft. North of S/E Corner of N/E1/4 of S10 T16N R10E of 6th PM containing Four (4) acres more or less.  This land was owned by Maurice/Morris W. E. PURCHASE and his wife Electa C. PURCHASE who sold the land for $200.00 and deeded it on 11 December 1885 to the Elkhorn City Cemetery Association and this was recorded on 19 January 1886 in Douglas Co. NE Deed Book 64, pages 576 & 577.

News items regarding the cemetery problems are mostly from the Waterloo Weekly Gazette published at Waterloo, Douglas Co. Nebraska. (Publishing began with the Friday, 1 July 1881 issue.)

16 September 1881:
"The citizens of Elkhorn City will hold a meeting at their school house on Saturday evening, September 24th for the purpose of organizing of a Cemetery Incorporation of their burying grounds. The people living in Waterloo and all others that feel interested are invited to be present and take part in the meeting."

16 September 1881:
Editor Gazette:
" I would like a small space in your estimable paper to agitate again the subject so often spoken of. What are we to do about fixing up our cemetery? - - Or, that all may know what I mean - The Elkhorn City Cemetery. The plea has been, that the land was owned by parties which made it almost impossible to get the right to do anything about it, but that obstacle has been removed. The land is now owned by one of our most worthy citizens, Mr. Thomas WILKINSON, and he has said that he will give the land for a Cemetery, if they, (meaning all who are interested), will fix it up.

" I think it would be, not only a great credit and honor to Elkhorn City, to have their Cemetery fixed up, and kept up in a respectful condition, but a consolation to everyone interested. There is not a person, but would be willing to do their share; all that is needed is some one to start it, and who is that some one to be? I propose, a meeting be held and committee be appointed to see what can be done. This should be done soon, before the prairie fire comes and destroys the flowers and evergreens that has been planted on the graves of our dear ones. I hope some one will respond, and propose something." [signed] Anxious

14 April 1882:
Mr. PURCHASE has platted a cemetery on the hill and has set a large number of shade trees on his grounds on the bluff near here. He proposes to make a beautiful plat of ground and sell lots to parties wishing desirable cemetery lots for a small sum. The location will be beautiful.

1 August 1884:
"The Elkhorn City Cemetery is numbered among the things that were. Since Mr. AINSWORTH has bought the land on which the Cemetery was located, he has refused to have any one else buried there. He says he will not disturb those that have been buried there, but will not allow anyone else buried there. Our citizens will have to buy some land now for a Cemetery, and when they do, it is hoped it will be kept in better shape than the old Cemetery was." Reporter.

29 August 1884:
"The sick are all convalescent, which is a good idea, for we have no place to bury our dead now. Mr. AINSWORTH emphatically refuses to have any one else buried in our cemetery, which has been used for that purpose ever since this country was first settled. That may be lawful but it certainly is not very neighborly." (Note: the statement regarding the vintage of the cemetery)

The "Present" cemetery was incorporated in 1885

27 March 1885:
"We understand Mr. AINSWORTH has consented to sell a few acres of his land for a cemetery. Would it not be well to have a citizens' meeting and try to make some arrangements to secure a few acres for that purpose?"

9 October 1885: The Elkhorn Times,  published at Elkhorn, Douglas Co. NE; Elk City news dated 7 October 1885.
"There is to be a meeting of the citizens of Elk City and the surrounding communities at the Hall on Friday evening, Oct. 16, for the purpose of taking some steps towards buying suitable grounds for a Cemetery, if they can not get possession of the old one."

26 October 1885:
Articles of incorporation were drafted on 26 Oct 1885 for the land that was bought from Maurice/Morris W. E. Purchase and his wife, Electa A. Purchase. Original members of the first cemetery association were: S. S. BLANCHARD, Hiram CULP; John BRYANT, Omar WHITNEY, Wm. R. TURNER, O. A. WOLCOTT, H. A. GRAY, John KNOX all residents of Douglas County. The first meeting was held 2 November 1885.

[1890-1930]

In 1932, Frank GELSTON of Elk City wrote a letter to Clarence RECKMEYER of Fremont, NE regarding the cemeteries. (in part) The Old Cemetery seemed to be the burying place for early pioneers going west. I think the land was government land or else owned by speculators and people just got started burying there and kept it up without any restrictions. No records were kept, if the people marked the grave with a stone that was the only record. People just went and dug graves where ever it suited them. Many of the people who had family or friends in the old cemetery had them moved to the new one. There are a few left but no one knows where they are as the stones are broken. Harry H. HAUK died in my father's house in March 1875. He worked for us and I think his folks lived in Ohio. It is not known if his parents or the Grange erected a stone for him. Harry brought the word from the old tavern at the foot of the hill conducted by W. R. TURNER the night that KEELER was killed. Keeler was not buried in the old cemetery but was buried on the farm where he lived and later taken up and moved to Fremont or the Keeler farm east of Fremont. There is a man by the name of Lou BOYER in Fremont, if he is living, that had children buried in the old cemetery. His brother Tom, ran a hotel in Elkhorn City, then he moved across the Elkhorn on a farm, then later to MO where he died. My mother worked for them in the hotel here before she married.
