Possible burials in the "Original" cemetery, aka Elkhorn City Cemetery:

I am "assuming" that those who died prior to 1885 when the "Present" cemetery was incorporated - were buried in the "Original" cemetery.**

ABRAM, Johnny, over 7 yrs old, drowned in the Rawhide on Wednesday last. Son of John Abram. Burial in Elkhorn City Cemetery. Rev. Winters conducted the services at the Elkhorn City schoolhouse. (2 June 1882)

AUSTIN, Ross, 3 mo. 21 day old son of S. & Carrie AUSTIN, died on Sat., 31 July 1881. Burial in Elkhorn City Cemetery.

BARBER, Emma L. (believed to be the first wife of Reuben W. BARBER who is buried Prospect Hill.) (GOGS: died 27 Sept. 1877 age 22y)

BESSEY, Harriet Elizabeth, aka Hattie, died 10 May 1866. It is believed that she was first buried here & then removed to the "Present" cemetery. Hattie was born 25 July 1863 Onondaga Co. NY.

27 June 1884 issue:

BESSEY, Lemuel (aka Lemuel Bessie in newspaper.) Died on Tuesday last at Elkhorn City. (27 June 1884 newspaper) Later in the paper said he died Monday morning at 7:30am. Had been in bad health but had improved & cultivated corn on Wednesday. On Sunday afternoon became ill with severe cramps in the breast and the doctor was called but he could not relieve him & on Monday he breathed his last.

4 July 1884 issue:

Lemuel Bessey died age 58-8-19. He was born 1825 in Scott, Cortland Co. NY.  Resided at Elkhorn City for 18 years. Had a large family of 7 sons & 4 daughters, 2 are deceased. All children except Frank & Mrs. Peter SIMPSON living at Papillion we believe were at the deathbed of their parent. (It is believed that he was later removed to the "Present" Elk City Cemetery.) (Born 10 Dec. 1825. Married 22 Oct. 1856 to Esther A. PURCHASE in Scott, Cortland Co. NY.  They had 11 children of which several are buried in the Elk City Cemetery.)

JOHNSON, Infant of Mr. & Mrs. Levi Johnson was buried on the 15th Jan. 1883. (GOGS: parents & other children in present cemetery but none this date.)

KEELER, Thomas, died ca 6 Dec. 1874.

LEACH, Zenas B. 15 Jan. 1816-8 March 1876 (believe removed to "Present" cemetery)

PETERSON, Mr., died on Saturday last near Waterloo. Elderly Danish man who recently came here. Buried Sunday at Elkhorn City Cemetery. No family. (19 Aug. 1881)

PURCHASE, Sarah O. died 21 Nov. 1856. Her remains were removed to the "Present" cemetery.  Born ca 25 Oct. 1841 in NY. Her parents died when she was young, so she was brought to Nebr. by her sister, Esther A. Purchase & husband Lemuel BESSEY. (GOGS: died age 14-11-1907)

SIMPSON, John Lemuel, 17 Nov. 1878-27 Nov. 1878

TAYLOR, Lyman H. died winter 1867; NY 20th Militia, later 80th NY Inf., enlisted at Kingston, NY. He was buried at Elk City since there was no cemetery at Valley Junction.

WEAVER, Cora, infant 16 month old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. WEAVER of Elkhorn City died 22 or 23rd Feb. (24 Feb. & 3 March 1882)

Part 2

In continuing my quest for information on burials in the "Present" Elk City Cemetery I have been fortunate in getting information from a variety of sources: newspaper abstracts, court records, correspondence, early Record of Assessments, family scrapbook containing newspaper clippings (many undated), family records and burial permits (state and county usually issued 2 days after death date). This information was then compared to NEBRASKA DOUGLAS COUNTY CEMETERIES, A recording of all rural Douglas County, Nebraska, cemeteries. The 275 page book was published in 1981 by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society from information gathered in 1975.

The burial data that I found was compared with the above mentioned cemetery book and this additional data will be shown as GOGS.

I was told in the early 1980s by the custodian of the Elk City Cemetery records that the early records were poorly kept. It was from the Record of Assessments in the custodian's possession that I copied the data pertaining to the lot owners as it appeared - with names and addresses crossed out - and with later additions of names and addresses.

Spelling of the names and locations was retained.

Elk City was aka Elkhorn City.

ABRAHAM, Lot William, died Wed. morning. Born 18 Nov. 1865 at Mt. Pleasant, IA. Died 19 Feb. 1902 age 36-3-1. Moved with parents to Douglas Co. in March 1881. Leaves father, 4 brothers & 1 sister. Member of MWA of Elk City. (GOGS: s/o J.M. & C. Abraham)

ABRAHAM, Mrs. John (Catherine BARTLETT), died Friday, 3 May, at her home 4 miles south of Valley.  Burial: Elk City Cemetery. Wife of John Abraham. Leaves husband & 6 children. Born 3 Oct. 1842 Rush Co. Ind. Moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa with parents in 1854. Married 5 Feb. 1865 to John M. Abraham. Baptised 15 Sept. 1878 at Mt. Pleasant in First Baptist Church. Spring of 1881 moved to Nebr. Had 6 sons & 1 dau.; one son drowned after arriving in Nebr.  Also leaves sister Mrs. O. E. HAGEN of Arlington, NE & bro. Jesse D. BARTLETT of Mt. Pleasant. Laid beside her child in the cemetery. (Record of Assessments: J. M. Abraham of Valley on 18 Jan. 1902 & 10 May 1901.)

APPLEBY, George, invalid for years; pioneer of Douglas Co. (GOGS: George H.; died 24 Mar. 1897, age 32y.)

APPLEBY, Mrs. Anna B. died Monday, 4 Aug., age 89, at home in Selma, CA. In 1878 married Thomas Appleby of Elk City. Graveside services at Elk City Cemetery. Survivors: sons, Thomas C. of Selma, CA, Charles A. of Serna, CA, William J. of Lyons. To Omaha in 1862, then married, returned to Omaha to take nurse' s training. Mrs. Tom Appleby accompanied the body from CA & is a guest of Mr. & Mrs. Herman Appleby. No date. (Record of Assessments: Mrs. A. B. Appleby (Will) on 14 Feb. 1907.)

APPLEBY, Mrs. W. J. (Margaret Eleanor ALLEN), born 15 Sep. 1884 on parents farm near David City, Nebr. Age 15 to this area. 24 Jan. 1904 married William APPLEBY of Elk City & had 3 sons. Member of Methodist Church in 1916. Died Tuesday, 9 Feb. 1943, age 58 yrs. Survivors: husband; 2 sons, Herman of Arlington & Harold of Bennington; 5 bros. Lee of Goodland, Kans., Ezra or Torrington, Wyo., Del, Ira & Louis of Van Tassel, Wyo.; 1 sister, Mrs. George TABLER of Hershey, Nebr. Son, Clyde, preceded her in death in 1911

APPLEBY, Anna, died Elkhorn on 26 Feb. 1923, age 81. (burial permit)

APPLEBY, Thomas, died 31 July 1982 age 26. Born 9 Nov. 1955 in Omaha. Survivors: wife Sharon; parents William & Virginia Appleby of Valley; 2 bros. James & John of Valley; 2 sisters Katy of Elkhorn & Linda of Valley; grandparents Herman & Agnes Appleby of Valley.

ALLISON, Charles H. 27 Nov. 1880 Chariton, IA - 8 Jan. 1943 Valley, NE, age 62-1-12. Married Anna Maude GRAF on 1 Apr 1905 in Fremont, NE. Survived by wife; stepson, Gerald Graf; foster son PFC Carl G. Allison in North Africa; sister Mrs. A. J. HEADLEY of Waterloo, Nebr; 4 bros, Harvey & Ira of Omaha, Pearl of Denver, Bert of Grand Island. Also many nieces & nephews. Two sisters, Mrs. Addie M. FORBES & Mrs. Cora V. HEADLEY preceded him in death.

BOHL, Jesse A.  Court record shows that when Jessie (Jesse A.) BOHL died 29 Aug. 1966 his coffin was placed partially on top of his grandmother's (BROCK) grave by mistake. Information from estate record of Reuben A. BOHL who died 11 Nov. 1969.

BARTLETT, Mrs. Ida, died 22 Nov. 1895 age 18 yrs. Leaves husband & child a few months old. Died at home of mother, Mrs. John MORRIS. Remains beside her father & sister in Elk City Cemetery. (GOGS: Ida May, w/o A. J. Bartlett; died age 18-6-15)

BESSEY, Mrs. E. A. (Esther A. PURCHASE), an Elk City pioneer, died Thursday, 16 Nov. 1899 at home of son, F. J. Bessey. Born NY State & came to Nebr. with her husband in 1866. He d 15 yrs ago & is buried at Elk City. She was in her 62nd year. Mother of 11 children, 9 living. No record of either burial. (Record of Assessments: Mrs. "Ester" Bessey on 18 June 1888.)

BROWN, "Grandma"  died at home of son, Peter BROWN, on Sunday, 13 July; age 78-1-23. Born in England on 2 June 1824, moved to Canada & there married Jas. BROWN. Had 12 children, 8 living. Member of LDS Church. (GOGS: Frances A., w/o of J. H. Brown died July 13, 1902, age 79- 1-11; mother.

BROCK, Steffen, lived 1/2 mile west of Elk City died from being trampled by his horses. Age 72 yrs. He & his wife came from Germany & lived here for the last 40 yrs. Wife, 4 daus & 1 son survive. BRAMLETT, Harvey, died 16 May 1982 Fremont, NE; born 16 Oct. 1934 Omaha. Married 30 Dec. 1963 Jacqueline RICHARDS.   Survivors: wife Jacqueline; sons, George, James, Harvey Jr., Jeffrey HAYDEN all at home, Edward HAYDEN of Fremont, Mark HAYDEN of Denison, Iowa. Also 2 bros: Derald of Rolling Meadows, Ill. & Larry of Omaha; 2 sisters, Mrs. David (Linda) LUNDHOLM, Timber Lake, SD & Mrs. Merlin (Shelia) COPELAND of Valley; step mother Mrs. William Bramlett & 3 grandsons.

COCKING, baby of Rev. Cocking of Purple Cane brought to Elk City for burial. Two of the children had whooping cough, the baby died on Sat., older girl so sick the mother could not accompany the father to the burial. 13 June 1902 news; no burial record. EHLERS, John 28 Nov. 1894 Bennington, NE - 25 Jan. 1981 age 86 at  Fremont, NE. Married 10 March 1918 to Pauline PETERS of Bennington. Had 3 children. Farmed 27 years s/w of Bennington, then moved to Blair & farmed there 17 years. Daughter, Loretta, who died 29 May 1929, sister Minnie (Mrs. John SASS) & 3 bros, Henry, George & William preceded him in death. Survivors: wife, Pauline, 2 sons Fred of Ft. Calhoun & Leon of Hooper; 5 grandchildren & 3 ggch. Services at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington.

EHLERS, Pauline 18 Feb. 1897 - 6 March 1982 age 85 at Fremont, NE. Born at Elkhorn to Jurgen & Pauline Peters. Daughter Loretta died 29 May 10933 (sic note difference), brother George, 2 sisters, Hermine (Mrs. Elmer HAVER) & Henrietta (Mrs. G. C. BECKER) & husband John Ehlers preceded her in death. Survivors: sons Fred & Leon; sisters Margaret KEMPCKE of Fremont & Anna NEWHOUSE of Bellevue; 5 grandchildren, John, Lee, Joanne & Randall EHLERS & Kristy MURPHY; 3 great grandchildren, Matt & Jill Ehlers & Billy Murphy. FAY, "Grandma",  died Wed. Burial Elk City Cemetery. Roxanna POST born Lower Canada on 1 March 1808. When young joined Baptist Church. Married 15 Feb. 1827 Israel Fay, Baptist minister. Had 10 children, 5 boys & 5 girls, all are dead except Mrs. Jennie CARRIGAN of Waterloo & Mrs. Betsy DAKENS of Douchester, Ontario, Canada. The Fays went to Kansas in 1859. Israel Fay is buried at Burlington, KS. She came to Waterloo in 1874 & joined the Christian Church. Died at home of Mrs. CARRIGAN & Miss BUTTERWORTH on 17 Apr 1901, age 93-1-16.

FITCH, Mrs. David died at home in Arlington on Friday, 22 April 1927. Douglas Co. resident for many years. Born Ellen Jane PARKER on 8 March 1859 in Dallas Co. Iowa. Married David H. Fitch on 29 May 1878 & moved to Douglas Co. about a year later where they resided on a farm. After leaving the ram they moved to Washington for yrs, hen to Arlington 7 yrs go. Had 10 children, 2 are deceased: Mabel age 13 yrs in 1891 & Ethel, 13 in 1903. Surviving children: Jesse Fitch, Lincoln, Mrs. Lizzie FALTER, Bancroft, SD, George Fitch, Yankton, SD, Mrs. Hazel SCHOENAUER, Plainview, Nebr., Mrs. Jennie MARSH, Osceola, SD, Frank D. Fitch, Parmalee, SD, Dr. Minnie LUBKER, Falls City, Nebr., Mrs. Rose SCHOENAUER of Plainview, Nebr.  Plus 22 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild. GELSTON, George W., died Monday, 15 Nov. 1897 age 67 yrs. Born 5 July 1830 Marlborough, Conn. Spent boyhood there & at East Haddam, Conn. In the late 1850s went to Iowa where he drove a stage.  Came to Nebr. as a driver & landlord for the same company, Western Stage. Married 4 Sept. 1862 to Mary WILKENING of Fontenelle, Nebr. In 1867 purchased farm at Elk City where he resided until his death. Leaves wife, 9 children; 7 sons live at Elk City; 2 daus Mrs. Anna CLAPP of Gordon, Nebr. & Mrs. Emma ROHWER of Belgrade, Nebr.

GELSTON, Mary (Wilkening), 9 Jan. 1842 Lindhurst, Prussia - 17 June 1920 Fullerton, Nebr., burial Elk City Cemetery. Came with parents, brother & 3 sisters to America when age 11 yrs. Lived at Quincy, Ill until 1859, then to Fontanelle, NE. On 4 Sept. 1862 she married George W. Gelston at Fontanelle, NE. They moved to Eagle Island near Clarks, NE where he worked for Western Stage. In 1867 they moved to Elk City. Survivors: 7 sons: (Frank (1863-1953), Henry W. (1872-1954), Samuel T. (1877-1970), George M. of Elk City, Charles S. of Doland, SD, Edwin M. of Oakland, CA, William R. of Quincy, IL & 2 daus Mrs. Anna L. Clapp of Gordon, NE & Mrs. Emma M. Rohwer of Fullerton, NE. Also surviving a brother, Henry Wilkening of Fontanelle & sister Mrs. Anna Lallman of Fontanelle. A sister Mrs. Caroline HILGENKAMP died near Arlington on 16 June 1920.

GUGIN, Benjamin H. (11 Apr 1889-8 Aug. 1889) is buried in the Elk City Cemetery according to a family member..

GLENDENING, Bertha L. (RAMSER), 22 Sept. 1887 Washington Co. NE - 20 Feb. 1982 Fremont, NE age 94. Parents: Fred & Hattie (MURLEY) RAMSER. Survivors: bro. George Ramser of rural Bennington; sister in law, Mrs. Mildred Ramser of Louistown, Idaho; 2 nieces Mrs. Dorothy LANIER & Mrs. Carole BECKER both of Louistown; 2 nephews, C. W. Ramser of Houston, TX & Earl W. Ramser of Clarkston, WA.

GROVER, James Loren, died at Bennington, age 74, 7 May 1921. Burial permit.

GROWCOCK, Howard P., died at Norfolk, 4 July 1979. Burial permit.

HANNON, Hugh, died at home of dau Mrs. J. C. COOPER on Monday, 28 Apr 1902, age 81-11-13. Born in County of Sligo, Parish of Killglass, Ireland on 15 May 1820. When age 12 went to Canada; 1848, removed to near Laffeyette, Ind., 1851 to Milford, Ill. where he made his home until coming to live with his dau. Father of 7, 2 survive. Funeral at Cooper home.

JUNGBLUTH, Gussie (son) of Mr & Mrs. Joseph Jungbluth died last Tuesday, burial on Thursday at Elk City Cemetery. 12 March 1900 news (GOGS: Gussie, son of J. & N., died 19 Feb 1900, age 11-7-20.)

KING, Eva D., died Omaha, age 80, 15 Jan. 1979. Burial permit. (Maiden name MORRIS. Married 1st Russell Park; 2nd Milford Olson; 3rd Chester Joseph King.)

KEMP, Robert Norman, babe found dead in his bed. Burial permit issued ?5 Sept. 1922. (Record of Assessments: 5 Sept. 1922 to Lewis Kemp.)

KRUSE, Dora Marie, 83, died at Blair on 24 March 1982; burial Elk City Cemetery. Dora born 16 June 1898 in Kennard to Charles & Anna (NEIMAN) SCHROEDER. She married Emil KRUSE who died in March 1973. Survived by sons, Elvin of Bennington, Vern of Kennard. 4 grandchildren & 9 great-grandchildren also survive.

KRUSE, Henry, died 21 Jan. 1983 Phoenix, AZ age 84. Services at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington. Survivors: son, William of Phoenix; sisters Lena Kruse, Hilda WHISENAND, Hulda LOCKWOOD all of Fremont; brother Howard of Millard, 4 grandchildren, Kirk, Brenda, Bridget & Bradley Kruse; sister in law Mrs. Arthur Kruse of Elkhorn.

LANG, Mary Margaret, age 65-2-26. Burial permit 27 March 1921.

LEACH, Mrs. Mary, mother of Albert & Ernest Leach who live 4 miles north of Elkhorn died last Wed., 1 May 1901, at home of her daughter, Mrs. O. T. GREER of Hamilton Co., this state. Funeral last Sunday, burial Elk City Cemetery. She was 80 yrs old. Husband died in 1876. 4 sons & daus survive; 3 others have been dead for some years. (GOGS: Mary, w/o Z. Mr. MAYHEW expresses thanks for the kindness to his departed wife & little children. Eliza MAYHEW died Sat. 28th age 39. Wife of Alfred MAYHEW. Born 1846 Suffolk, Eng. Married 7 May 1867 in London. 4 September 1885:
Died: Bayard T. THOMPSON; funeral on Sunday last with Rev. HICK at Presbyterian Church. Masonic order in charge. Remains to Brittain Cemetery beside his wife's remains. No burial record.

18 September 1885:
Died on 5 Sept. Mrs. Hatie KORNERMAN wife of D. KORNERMAN age 28 yrs near Elk City. Native of German Empire. Came to Nebr. with her husband in the spring of 1884. Member of Christian Church. Her infant son died soon after & both buried in one grave. Husband survives. Burial in the Stiner Cemetery.

25 September 1885:
On Sunday, 4 Oct., Rev. HICK will preach on the death of the children, a funeral sermon on the characters of Mr. HIEMBAUGH's & Mr. REPASS'children who died last August. (GOGS: Olive REPASS died 27 July 1885 age 7y29d; Henraett REPASS died 2 Aug. 1885, age 9-1-29 both buried Old Elkhorn, daus of E. A. & M. REPASS.) No record of HIEMBAUGH/HEIMBAUGH burials.

9 October 1885:
Frederick MOHN died Tuesday at residence of Wm. R. TURNER, Elk City. Age 62. Funeral today at Turner residence; services by Rev. John N. ZIMMER. No burial found.

8 January 1886:
Died: Aven ASKWIG on 30 Dec. age 1-7-24; youngest son of A.E. & E.M. ASKWIG. Had been in poor health . Rev. J. W. PLUMMER of M.E. Church preached funeral at residence on New Year's day. Remains buried in family cemetery on the premises. (GOGS: Prospect Hill; Aven E. Jr. died age 1-6-20. Many Askwig burials in cemetery.)

5 March 1886:
Died: Clinton A. WORLEY on the 10th of Feb. at home of Preston REEVES. Dec'd was born Lehigh Co., Penn. on Dec. 22, 1861. In 1878 came to Nebr. where made his home with Mr. Reeves. Leaves a brother & Mr. & Mrs. Reeves who loved him as a son and his mother in Penn. Services by C. M. BARNES of Waterloo on the Lord's day, 21 Feb. at Reeves residence. ?Burial Brittain Cemetery?

Died on the 22nd, Joseph BUTRICK from injuries suffered in a car accident in Waterloo. Services in Presbyterian church with Rev. John PATTISON; burial Prospect Hill Cemetery. Survivors: parents Mr & Mrs Charles BUTRICK & 2 little sisters, Gladys & Esther.

Died on the 26th, Robert Leroy KEISER small son of Mr. & Mrs. W. F. KEISER of Elkhorn. He was born 22 Feb. 1921 & was age 6-2-4 at death. Attended Dist. 41 school. Beside his parents, he is survived by 2 bros. & a sister: Harold, 11; Betty, 5 & Laverne, 3. Funeral at Keiser home, 4 1/2 miles NW of Elkhorn. Services by Rev. O. W. EBRIGHT of Omaha; burial Prospect Hill.

Died 18 Sept. 1934, Mrs. Mary QUINN, former resident of Elkhorn, died at her home in Omaha. Born 1 June 1853 in LaSalle, Ill.; age 81-3-18 at death. Came with parents in 1872 to farm near Elkhorn. Married Daniel QUINN at St. Patrick's church in Elkhorn on 15 Oct. 1876. Also lived Colo. for a few years. Survived by a dau, Mrs. Norine BUSCH of Howells, Nebr. & a bro. James E. QUINN of Elkhorn. Services at St. Patrick's; burial Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Died on 10 Sept. in Omaha, Detlef Henry ANDERSON, pioneer of Nebr. & Douglas Co. at age 75-10-10. Born 1 Nov. 1858 in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. Married Catherine SENDEL at Arcola, Ill on 3 Feb 1887. She died in 1916 & 6 children also preceded him is death. Survived by 2 sons, Henry & George Anderson, 3 daus, Mrs. Marie DESLER, Mrs. Ella CONLON of Calif. & Mrs. Clara GOTTSCH. Also a bro, Hans Anderson of Florence & 5 grandchildren. Burial in German cemetery north of Bennington. No burial found.

Edward PAYNE, former Waterloo resident, died 17 Sept. 1934 in Washburn, Wisc., age 53 yrs. Survived by 3 daus: Mrs. Wilbur MORRIS of Cozad, Nebr, Bernita & Betty June who live in Omaha. Also by 3 bros: Harry of Valley, Ray of Omaha & Fred of Wisc., 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose MORRIS of Omaha & Mrs. E. A. KELLETT of Elkhorn. Body to the Harry PAYNE home at Valley; interment in Prospect Hill. No burial found.

ELK CITY CEMETERIES aka Elkhorn City Cemeteries
Past and Present
Located in Western Douglas County, Nebraska

This historical information prepared by Mrs. Georgene Morris Sones, Omaha, Douglas Co. NE

    I have a personal interest in these cemetery locations and for many years have gathered additional information regarding those interred in the two sites. Information has come from newspaper abstracts, scrapbooks, family records, courthouse records, and correspondents. But in particular the greatest source of information has come from my friend, Ralph C. WILSON, of Waterloo, to whom I extend my personal thanks for his assistance and friendship.  I also thank the many other who contributed information

    The "Original" cemetery location was in S11 T16N R10E. This site is on private land and permission must be obtained to enter the premises. I have been told that when the Mormons left Winter Quarters in the Florence area, many of them died and were buried in a common grave near or at the site of this original cemetery; however, I have no information regarding these Mormon burials. The location is south across a field from the "Present" cemetery. A search there some years ago did not reveal any tombstones; however, I was told several stones had been removed, and supposedly one stone remains which is buried.   In several places the earth indicated definite depressions, remnants of broken stones were found and lily plants were abundant. Several bodies were moved from the original cemetery and reburied in the "Present" cemetery.

    John BRITTON & wife deeded land to Elkhorn Cemetery Association on 8 April 1871.

    Thomas WILKINSON purchased this land in 1881 from Sophia LOWE. On 1 April 1884, Thomas WILKINSON and wife Lucy S. sold this parcel of land to William C. AINSWORTH.

    The "Present" cemetery location: 840 ft. North of S/E Corner of N/E1/4 of S10 T16N R10E of 6th PM containing Four (4) acres more or less.  This land was owned by Maurice/Morris W. E. PURCHASE and his wife Electa C. PURCHASE who sold the land for $200.00 and deeded it on 11 December 1885 to the Elkhorn City Cemetery Association and this was recorded on 19 January 1886 in Douglas Co. NE Deed Book 64, pages 576 & 577.

    News items regarding the cemetery problems are mostly from the Waterloo Weekly Gazette published at Waterloo, Douglas Co. Nebraska. (Publishing began with the Friday, 1 July 1881 issue.)

16 September 1881:
    "The citizens of Elkhorn City will hold a meeting at their school house on Saturday evening, September 24th for the purpose of organizing of a Cemetery Incorporation of their burying grounds. The people living in Waterloo and all others that feel interested are invited to be present and take part in the meeting."
