November 1, 1936 – August 4, 1953
Because he
was friendly, loyal, too …
Because he was cheerful, never blue …
Because he worked with conquering zeal …
Because he played with
spirit as real …
Because he had made life’s journey through …
Because we shall not find another so true …
Because he was the best
of all we know …
Because he was Joe and we loved him so …

To the teachers’ delight and our disgust, most of us started our
school career on September 1, 1942. Those of us that started our happy
school days together are: Billy Ray Andrews, Devane Andrews, Buddy
Bellot, R V Boswell, Wendell Dinkins, Jack Faircloth, Jimmy Fulford,
Kathryn Adams, Martha Blackburn, Bobbye Brooks, Beverly Brown, Catherine
(Hewett) Burke, Betty Jo Bush, June Chitty, Sue Chitty, Anita Donaldson,
Virginia (Teal) Williams, Kenneth Harris, John Neal Leavins, Sonny
Tharpe, Betty Hough, Shirley Little, Sue Martin, Lula Messer, Janice
Sheffield, Betty Sue Slay, Betty Strickland, and Shirley Ann Wilcox.
We learned first to act in the first grade when we staged our
operetta, "Forest Friends", under the direction of ours teachers, Mrs
Kates and Miss Katie McDonald. We had our first experience with music
too as members of the rhythm band.
In the second grade, our
enrollment was enlarged by the arrival of three new members, Bill Tom
Gavin, Virginia Lisenby, and Robbie Lynn Rogers.
Our class had
begun to grow. Through the years we were jointed by Billy Howell and
Sarah White in the third grade; Helen Brown, Evelyn Hewett and Monette
Watford joined us in the fifth grade. This was also the year we became
professionals in the field of acting. We gave a play about the pilgrims.
We had a lot of fun in the sixth grade, but we could hardly wait for
the end of the year when we would graduate; most of the girls got their
first formal and the boys surely looked cute in their bow ties. After
the graduation, all the class had a banquet and a dance in the gym.
Brother! We really thought we were grown up then.
The next year,
we thought we were almost out of school. We changed classes just like
the big boys and girls. We also increased our enrollment of Betty Gavin,
Sarah Clark, Ralph Rich, Gail Keith and Kay Dell Frank.
In the
eighth grade were joined by Johnnie Pippin, Patty Brazil, Jerry Balkcom,
Willie Lee Dozier, Levoyd Toole, and Billy Wells. This really increased
the volume of the class.
In the ninth grade we were joined by
Eugene Sawyer, Robert Sellers, Zolena Lewis, Doris Minger, Pauline
Sassnet, Betty Brunson, Bobby Cherry, Mary Alice Coleman and Jone Ellis.
We also got a name, "Freshmen".
In the tenth grade we became
members of Senior High and also got a new name, "Sophomores". Edna Earl
Grant and Hulen Ray joined our group that year.
The next year we
really felt our onions besides getting a new name, "Juniors", we got our
class rings to wear and let the whole world know we were growing up. We
gave a Junior play and sponsored the best banquet ever. We had a rather
funny feeling at graduation that year because we knew we would be next.
Hurdis Pitts and Lemar Allen joined our little group that year. At last,
September 1, 1953, we came back to school to have the name of "Seniors"
bestowed upon us. We really were busy that whole year sponsoring two
Senior plays, editing an annual and a school paper. We were busy trying
to sponsor everything, trying to raise enough money to go to Washington.
Then everybody was working at the Rodeo, the county fair, sponsoring a
square dance, a Halloween Carnival, a Womanless Wedding or a talent
show, and we even sold sandwiches at recess. But we made it to
Washington and it was worth all the hard work we did. We were guided
through all of these activities under the direction of our faithful
sponsors, Mrs Lyverne Curry and Miss Catherine Powell. We finally
completed the nine months and received that little piece of paper
(diploma) that we had been waiting a lifetime for. What still puzzles us
is how we ever made it to graduate, because we certainly didn’t have
time to study with all the other things we had to do.

While looking through the scrapbooks of the Pensacola Eagle, Panama
City Gazette and Holmes County Reaper, owned by Mr and Mrs Billy Pelham
(Sue Martin), we found the following clippings from the trip to
Washington made by the Seniors of 1979. This trip was given to the
Seniors by the Class of 1954, who made the same trip twenty-five years
ago. Here are some of the clippings that made headlines while they were
shown the Capital city the HCHS Alumni:
WASHINGTON SQUARE
GARDENS IS HIGHLIGHT OF SENIOR FIFTH DAY IN WASHINGTON: Entertained at
Gardens by Florida Senators, Witness Basketball Game, Boxing Match and
Wrestling Match Between Old HCHS Students.
Senators Robbie Rogers
and Virginia Lisenby entertained the Seniors at the Washington Square
Gardens last night. While there they witnessed a boxing match for the
Heavyweight Championship title managed by Wendell Dinkins and Eugene
Sawyer, managed by R V Boswell.
The basketball game followed
between the Bonifay Globe Trotters coached by Pauline Sassnett, and the
Chipley High Hatters, coached by Doris Minger. The game ended in a tie
according to the score keeper, Devane Andrews, and referees, Betty Gavin
and Betty Strickland, but most of the fans believed that the referees
and scorekeeper were a little partial to Chipley since Mrs Jimmy Hunt
(Anita Donaldson) gave each a fifty dollar bill before the game.
The evening was climaxed with an exciting wrestling match between the
world renowned Esto Women Wrestlers, Sarah Clark and Janice Sheffield.
This is the first time these two had ever met, and the managers, Monette
Watford and Martha Blackburn, said that they wouldn’t have met this time
but because the 1979 Seniors from home were going to be there they
decided to forget their hard feelings and match.
HCHS SENIORS FLY
TO WASHINGTON: Flown to Washington By B-G Airways. Seniors Are Met by
President: Washington (Special) The HCHS Seniors of ’79 were met at the
airport by President and Mrs Jimmy Fulford (Bobby Brooks) as they
stepped off of the huge Rhode Island Red, airliner, the largest of its
kind in the world, owned by Bill Tom Gavin and Jerry Balkcom.
They were given a schedule of the week’s events that were in.
SENIORS REVIEW NAVAL SHIPS: Admiral Andrews, Miss Grant, and Mr Ray
Greet ’79 Seniors: Washington (Special) The first day in Washington was
filled with excitement as the ’79 Seniors reviewed Admiral Billy
Andrews’ naval fleet. They were escorted through the fleet by Midshipmen
Billy Wells, Sonny Tharpe, and Kenneth Harris.
Miss Edna Grant,
Congresswoman from Florida, christened Admiral Andrews’ new ship the
Curry-Powell at a very impressive ceremony which was climaxed with the
presentation of the Senatorial Medal of Honor that was given to that
brave Midshipman, Hulen Ray for his bravery in the last war.
MISSES BROWN AND BUSH ENTERTAIN SENIORS WITH BALL: Largest Ball in
History. Well Known Businessmen and Women Who are Ex-Students Present
Class with Gifts:
One of the largest balls in Washington’s
history was given Saturday night by the Misses Beverly Brown and Betty
Bush, a climax for the Seniors’ trip to Washington.
The Seniors
were given favors of a year’s supply of snowballs and milkshakes by the
co-owners of Chance-Bruner, Inc (Mrs Patty Brazil Chance and Mrs Kathryn
Adams Bruner).
K D Faulk, well known cosmetic expert, presented
each Senior girl with a five year supply of Faulk’s Freckle Blemish
Cream.
The Pitts-Levins Moonshine Company presented the Senior
boys with a case of Moonshine.
More than 1,000 guests attended
the ball. This will be one that the Seniors won’t forget for a long time
since all of the Class of ’54 were at the ball too.

ARRESTED WATCHING ALUMNI PERFORM: Policewomen Raid Blue Moon and Find
Students Watching a Burlesque Being Performed By Ex-Alumni:
Washington (Special): It was the first night in jail for many of the
Seniors, a situation which resulted after a raid of the Blue Moon night
club last night by Policewomen Virginia Williams, Gail Keith, Sarah
White and Shirley Wilcox. The raid came while the Seniors were watching
an outstanding performance that was being given by two of their alumnae,
Johnnie, "Dirty Red" Pippin and Shirley Little. They were each
performing a fan and bubble dance. "The Blue Moon, owned by Willie
Dozier, is one of the few night clubs that is off-limits to minors",
stated Sheriff Forest (Buddy) Bellot. He also said that he hoped that
this shocking news would not reach M A Coleman, now principal of HCHS.
SENIORS TRAVEL HOME: After an eventful week in Washington, the Class
of ’79 begin their long return journey home today.
Since most of
the Seniors had never attended a Catholic Church, they stopped at
Chittyville, Virginia (named after those famous Seniors of ’54, Sue and
June) to attend the beautiful ordination ceremony in which Father Billy
Howell ordained Zolena Lewis and Lula Messer as nuns.
They ate
dinner at the Cherry-Brunson Hotel with several other ’54 Seniors, the
Mesdames Helen Brown, Catherine Burke and Betty Mayhew, who are now
living at Chittyville and own the Chittyville Glue Factory.
From
Chittyville they traveled home by autos furnished by Toole Auto Company
of Bonifay. Before arriving at the Josey-Hough Motel for the night, they
had traveled most of the afternoon on the Skyline Boulevard, built by
the successful civil engineer, Lamar Allen.
They were met Monday
afternoon by Assistant Principal Jack Faircloth and Teachers Eloise
Jackson and Betty Slay just as the bell rang for school to be out for
Spring Holidays.
