MRS. MARY HERNDON DIES IN HOSPITAL
Funeral services of Mrs. Mary Herndon, forty four of Midland City, who died in a local hospital yesterday, will be held today at 2 P.M. at Corinth Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Holman of Hartford directing,
Surviving are her husband, H. J. Herndon of Midland City; two sons, Jack and Horace Herndon, of Midland City; six daughters, Elna, Lue Verna, Nellie Merle, Nina Jo, and Janice Fay Herndon, all of Midland City, and Inez Herndon of Thomasville, Georgia; three brothers, J.F. Register of Dothan, W.T. Register of Slocomb and Lester Register of Tampa; and two sisters, Mrs. E.W. Bailey of Tampa, Florida and Mrs. S.D. Peters of Slocomb. (I do not know who gave this information to the Dothan Eagle)
My Mother, Ollie died too young. She was quite the discipliner, whereas Papa could be sweet-talked out of punishment for not obeying rules. How well I remember the "Peach tree Switches", so well used by Mama. I thought if I screamed loud enough for the neighbors to hear, she would stop, but "wrong". This only made her desire to correct my fault, along with the screaming. Those were the days before child abuse, and I know I am a better person due to it.
One of the favorite stories of Papa and one he told often during his last years, I shall attempt to relate. He Mama, Lue Verna and I were walking to a field to do some work. As usual, we were wrapped in clothes and bonnets to keep the sun off, the clothes were probably overalls from our brother Jack, with some shirts with long sleeves. She said to me, "you are so ugly", and I said, "well, just look at my Mama and Papa". He thought that was a funny story. Apparently I was young at the time.
I remember her with a warm and loving feeling. Each summer for many years, she Lue Verna and I visited her family, who lived in and around Slocomb and Hartford. Lue Verna and I looked forward to those visits. They seemed to live so far away, and we lived between Midland City and Echo. She told me of a black lady who lived on the same farm that her family did, she would go into the fields that had high growth and hide snuff for Mama to get.
Notes for HARVEY JACKSON HERNDON:
When Papa was 3 years old, his family moved from Miller County, Georgia to Dale County, Alabama. He told me they moved by wagon. The first home I remember living in was in Dale County, in the Corinth community, between Echo, Alabama and Midland City, Alabama. Papa rented farm land from John and Anna Preston for many years. He paid the rent by giving them half of the value of the production of the farm. In 1938, we moved to the Christian Hill community, where he bought a farm, it was called the "Short Sketoe Place", Short was an Uncle of Papa, and at one time he had owned this farm. We lived on this farm until 1947, when this farm was sold and we moved to Houston, County, Alabama. Here my brother, Horace and he bought a farm, located five miles from Dothan. They both lived there until their deaths. The farm land was sold, and is now a residential area, located on and near John Odom Road.
Papa liked to talk about the past, and I wish I had listened. He had little formal education, but was well educated, read and knew more about the current events of the world than I, or many others. His last four years were spent with our sister Inez, and I am very grateful to her for all the love and care she gave him. He died from a Cerebral Vascular Accident, which he had while sleeping. He lingered only a few hours, which was the way he would have wished. In his younger days he would make for himself wine in the woods, then walk a stream to hide his tracks to prevent our Mother from locating it. She always found it and poured it out. I suppose that is where I get my desire for detective work, searching for our ancestors.
He married Minnie Walker some years after Mama died. They spent 30 happy years.
