More about Algie Horton, as related by his son, Ray:
Daddy and Mama moved from area of Black, Al. to Bonifay, Fl. about year 1934,
to a house on Banfield Ave., and Daddy worked for his brother-in-law, John M. Bush
driving a gas truck delivering Sinclair gasoline and oil to service stations, farmers
and saw mills, etc. Within two or three years Daddy and Mama moved to a house
on Sand Path Road, the place known in later years as "Ox Long Place". They moved
from there to first house they owned in Bonifay, that was located at site of
Jerkin's Building Supply Co. door and dry-wall warehouse.
In this time frame, about time of beginning of World War II, Wainwright Shipyard
in Panama City, Fl. opened for purpose of building "liberty ships" for use in
transporting war materials to theAmerican troops on the various battle fronts, and,
by lure of the big money that was available, Daddy left the Gas truck occupation for
the ship building industry., commuting between Bonifay and Panama City, first with
another vehicle owner, and then he purchased a 1939 Chevrolet Station Wagon,
and along with his work, made extra income by charging other shipyard employees
from Bonifay to ride on his vehicle.
At end of the war, when Wainwright Shipyard was closed down, Daddy
returned to employment in Bonifay at Bonifay Heading Company, which was
located adjacent to our residence. While working there, operating a "jointer
machine", used in the barrel-head manufacturer process, he lost part of four of
his fingers on left hand in an accident. Shortly after the accident, he returned
to employment with John M. Bush driving the Gas truck. In course of time, John M.
changed over to being agent for Texaco products, and a little later, sold his
business to Grady Rich, and Grady in turn sold to Ed Woods, who was from Chipley,
and daddy continued for a time in employment of each of these people. He went from
that job into job at Bush Appliance and Hardware Co., also owned by John M. Bush,
and from that job back to driving a Gas Truck, working for Curt Miller, Jr., first
in an independent brank, then into Exxon distributorship.
Daddy suffered, in his latter years, from "mental dementia", and died from
a massive heart attack at age 85.

Notes for BONNIE THELMA BROOKS:
Excerpts from the autobiography titled "Mom's Ramblings" by Bonnie Brooks Hartman,
descendent of Susan Rebecca Brooks (recorded by son, John F. Hartman):
"I was born on October 14, 1910 in Victoria, a tiny little place in Alabama,
between Troy and Elba. Everyone called the place "Smut Eye" (see note below)
affectionately. I can remember only about seven or eight houses, two stores,
and a Post Office. My grandmother, Susie Ma, was the Post Mistress, and my dad
(her son) was the mail carrier. He delivered mail in a buggy. His very spirited
horse was named Lita."
Mildred Head of Victoria tells the following history of Victoria (Oct. 29, 2000)
- re: 1854 Gazetteer of the United States: by Thomas Baldwin and J. Thomas, M.D.:
"The present town of Victoria was originally named "Smut Eye" because the loggers,
farmers and other rowdies would gather at the local bar and get drunk. The bar owner
would run them out and they would gather in the road outside and build fires to keep
warm. The smoke would be so thick it would irritate the eyes. Hence the name of
'Smut Eye'.
"A school teacher named Victoria (last name unknown) came to town, sometime after
1854, and decided to change the name to something more dignified. Not surprisingly,
she named it Victoria. The name stuck."
