In the 1990's the Hernando Historical Museum Association, Inc. and the Genealogical Society of Hernando County documented 55 cemetery or burial sites in the county. They then began the arduous task of surveying each cemetery and transcribing the headstones and grave markers. The task was finally completed in 1995, with the transcriptions being enhanced with information obtained from the Garnett Funeral Home Records, published obituaries, and personal knowledge of family and community members.
By the time they completed the task, the computer system used to contain the data was long redundant and therefore unusable. Over the next 5 years several people undertook the task of converting these files into a format that was readable by any modern computer. About that time I moved back to Hernando County and became involved with the Museum Assn. and began the process of converting the cemetery files for use on the internet.
