SURNAME: Geiger, Coleman

Respond to: harris@rabun.net

I am interested in the Geiger and Coleman families. My g.g.g.f was Jesse Coleman (b.1811) who moved to Hamilton County in 1863 to escape the invading federal forces. He along with my g.g.f., William Riley Coleman (b.1847), left Benton (Polk County) TN with the families of David Ward and James Napoleon Reid. My g.f. with Andrew Jason Coleman (b.1885). The Colemans are decedents of Spencer Coleman, a revolutionary soldier from King and Queen County, VA.

On the Geiger side, I descended from Asa Geiger (b1799 in Ware County, GA. One of his sons, James William Geiger (b.1823) was my g.g.g.f, who was wounded in the Battle of Olustee on February 20, 1864 and died in Hamilton County about one month later. My g.g.f was John Daughtary Geiger (b.1851) in Hamilton County and was the father of my g.m., Delia Elizabeth Geiger (b.1892).

Four of the Geiger sisters, to wit: Delia, Carrie, Nannie and Mary Abigail (Mamie) Geiger married four of the Coleman brothers, to wit: Andrew Jason, David Franklin, William Jesse and James Monroe, during the first decade of the 20th century. Together, they reared 35 children and moved to the Jacksonville, FL area around 1910.

I am especially interested in any info about the journey of the Coleman, Reid and Ward families in 1863 from Polk County, TN to Hamilton County, FL and their lives in Hamilton County. Wm. Riley Coleman died in Jasper, FL in 1908, at which time Jesse, age 92, was still living. Wm. Riley Coleman was married to Mary Jane Ward.

I am trying to locate the graves of all of these people, as well as any of the other Colemans and Geigers. (I have been to the Geiger cemetery in Hamilton County, as well as Hebron Cemetery.)

Any help anyone can render will be greatly appreciated. Gary Harris - Clayton (Rabun County) GA harris@rabun.net

SURNAME: Goodbread, McLeod, Brown

Respond to: bmr2@gate.net

Posted: 07 Sep 98

I'm trying to obtain information on my family, Goodbread/McLeod. From what I've been able to find out, my grandmother was Julia Vinsant or VanZant Goodbread (May 26, 1880) and my grandfather was Jacob A. McLeod (November 5, 1878). I believe they were both born in White Springs. I just learned last night that my grandmother's father was John Phillip Bradley Goodbread and her mother was Elizabeth Brown. She had 12 brothers and sisters, all born in Hamilton County. Julia married Jacob McLeod on Dec. 25, 1900. Can you suggest anything I can do to obtain information about any of them? I have sent for my grandparents birth certificates, but it's doubtful I'll get them as they only have scattered birth records from 1865. I couldn't believe it when I was told she had 12 siblings! Please - any help you might offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Barbara Remerow <
