Welcome to the Gadsden County FLGenWeb Page. I am Tim Stowell who is coordinating this site. I do not live in Florida and although I have no ancestors in Gadsden County, genealogy has been an important part of my life for many years. I would welcome any suggestions or help with this page, especially from anyone living in Gadsden County or with ancestors from there.
The boundaries for Gadsden County were set in 1823 by the Florida Territorial Legislature. It was named for James Gadsden who was the aide-de-camp to Andrew Jackson. Early settlers from Virginia, Maryland and the Carolinas came to the area. Many of the original settlers were wealthy slave owners and the county is still famous for its large plantations and tobacco crop. The city of Quincy is the county seat. |
