Obituary of Bernardina Sprangers - Sheboygan County Newspaper - published in Sheboygan Falls - Wednesday - June 6, 1906

Old Pioneer Passed To Her Reward

Mrs. Mathias Spranger died as her home in the village Monday, June 4th, 1906 at the age of 74 years, after a lingering illness of about three months with cancer from which she suffered undescribable agony at times, though everything was done for her that loving care and medical skill could afford to ease her suffering, when on Monday death came as a sweet release to her, as she looked forward to a happy future in the hereafter . But for the surviving members of the family it seems a dark cloud that shrouds over their home and took from them their dearly beloved mother and even casts a shadow of sorrow over her many friends who had learned to love and respect her as only true friends can. Mrs. Sprangers was formerly Miss Berdiena Bacot , daughter of H. Bacot and was, up to her death, the only surviving member of her father's family. She was born in the city of Arnhem, Guelderland, Holland, Sept. 3rd, 1831, and the 10th day of Sept. 1846, Mrs. Sprangers accompanied her family to America where on May 30, 1848 she became the wife of Mathias Sprangers a native of Lage Zwalwue, North Brabandt, Holland. Unto Mr. And Mrs. Sprangers were born a family of 13 children of which two daughters and three sons survuve, Huberdina the wife of Henry Benefelt of Milwaukee; Henriette, the wife of James Lamb, a farmer in Holland township; Mathias, who is also a farmer in that town; Walter, who is a real estate agent an farmer near Ootsburg and Rev. John Sprangers of Brillion. Mrs. Sprangers was one of the oldest pioneers of Holland township having resided on a farm until 1883 when she moved to Ootsburg where she had purchased a beautiful little home in the village and spent the remainder of her life there. Mrs. Sprangers was an active member of St. George Catholic church as was also her esteemed husband who preceded her in death many years ago. The funeral was held Thursday morning from the St. George Catholic church Rev. Father Paul E. Schiedel assisted by several other priests officiated. The remains were laid at rest in the St. George Cemetery in Wilson township. Thus one of our oldest pioneers who lived in Holland township for about 60 years has passed to the better land and to many of her friends it is but another reminder that our stay in this world is very short and soon our pilgramage must end; then let us strive to live so that we can say as did our deceased friend, " It is well with my soul".

Information added by Ann that is not part of the obit but is additional information

"Bernardina was the daughter of Hendrik {Henry} Dirk Bacot and Alida Theodora Gamelkoorn. Hendrik died in Holland after which Alida married Peter Lyser. Alida and Peter took the family to Wisconsin in 1846. But Bernardina and her siblings never took the name Lyser, always referring to themselves as Bacot's. I don't know why. Maybe that was the custom in those days or if Peter did not formally adopt the children, then they kept their father's name, as is done today."

Pioneer Citizen

Carl Schwartz, Who Came to Plymouth when the County was a Huge Forest,

Passes Away

At the Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Gottlieb Oestreich, Last Wednesday Morning

A long time and honored citizen of Plymouth closed his eyes in Death's slumber last Wednesday morning, at which time Carl Schwartz passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gottlieb Oestreich on Milwaukee street. Shortly before Christmas he suffered a stroke of paralysis, since which time he failed gradually until the earthly struggle ceased.

Deceased was born at Olversleben, Saxon-Weimar, Germany, on March 22, 1822. He left the scenes of his native land in 1847, which year he came to America and Sheboygan county, settling in Plymouth. He was a blacksmith by trade and soon after arrival, followed his occupation on the site now occupied by Wm. Langjahr. Later, in company with his brother John, deceased, he engaged in the manufacture of iron on the site on which the new Plymouth Exchange Bank building is now in the course of construction. The firm sold out the business and later built what is now known as the Schwartz foundry on the corner of Mill and Milwaukee streets.

The deceased was wedded to Miss Gertrude Maurer of Johnsonville about fifty-five years ago, she preceding him in death about five years. Three sons and two daughters survive as follows: Henry and Carl of Milwaukee, William of Seymour, Mrs. H. Weinhold of Adell and Mrs. G. Oestreich of this city. Three sisters, Mrs. Eva Maurer of Glenbeulah, Mrs. Ernestina Anderson of Milwaukee and Mrs. Augusta Ziegler of Sheboygan, and one stepbrother, Albert of this city, also survive.

Mr. Schwartz was prominently identified with the early business interests of our city and even tho the years crept upon him in number, he had a yearning for business activity. Of late years, however, he spent a quiet life, but he always maintained a warm interest for the place that he had seen converted from forests to our sustantial city of today. He was kind and hospitable in his nature and highly esteemed for his sterling qualities.

The funeral will be held this afternoon, Rev. Geo. Beisser to officiate.

{Burial was made on January 11, 1907 in the Union Cemetery, Plymouth}

Frank C. Siegworth, 43, town of Wilson farmer and father of five children, was killed almost instantly at 4:50 a.m. Sunday by an automobile driven by Anton Slapekis, 1807 S. Eighth street, as Mr. Siegworth was walking toward his home south on Highway 141.

Slapekis was picked up by County Traffic Officers Gary Hubers and Roland Gilligan within two blocks of the scene of the mishap, which occurred just inside the city limits where Oakland avenue crosses the state highway. The two county traffic officers, both of whom had been out the entire night riding from one end of the county to the other on accident calls, were traveling south on Highway 141 to investigate a call reporting a car in the ditch.

Notice Auto

At the city limits, they said today, they noticed an auto swing around at the intersection and thinking something was wrong, followed the vehicle for two blocks to where it stopped.

They accosted Slapekis, the driver, and asked him where he was going. He replied by stating that there was a man lying in the road. The officers stated, "Well, you must have hit him."

In the meantime two city officers riding a squad car came upon the scene and the ambulance was summoned. When it arrived, Mr. Siegworth was dead. Coroner Harry Heiden was summoned and he pronounced the fatal injury a skull fracture.

Information later revealed that Mr. Siegworth's car had stalled on S. Fourteenth street and that he had decided to walk home to be in time for morning chores.

Slapekis was taken to the city lock-up. Chief of Police Walter H. Wagner conferred with the coroner and the county traffic officers and an inquest was ordered by District Attorney Jacob A. Fessler for 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Slapekis Released

Slapekis was allowed to go to his home without furnishing bail. No formal charges have been placed against him awaiting the findings of the coroner's jury which will meet on the fifth floor of the court house.

His marriage to Miss Susan Van Ess of the Town of Wilson occurred on July 16, 1921.

Survivors include his wife and one daughter, Germaine, at home and one son, Corp. Roger Siegworth with the U.S. armed forces in Africa; his mother, Mrs. Henry Siegworth; two sisters, Mrs. Adolph P. {Helen} Heisdorf and Mrs. Raphael {Ardella} Reding, the later of Haven. His father and a brother, Frank, preceded him in death.

"Al", as he was familiarly called, enjoyed an extensive acquaintance both here and in Manitowoc. He was jovial, and had a sense of humor that drew friends to him. He loved the great outdoors, and enjoyed both hunting and fishing as a pastime. He was an ideal husband and father, and here his death falls with stunning force.

During his illness he was constantly thinking of his son far away in Africa and repeatedly expressed the wish that he might see him. This is one of the sad events, another illustration how war can make distance so great at times. He played a part in civic undertakings, and had a business knowledge which made him most valuable on committees. At the Modern Dairy where he was an officer, he was esteemed by management and employees alike. His death is a severe loss to the community.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m., Friday, at the Gerend Funeral home and at 9 a.m. at Holy Name church. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 p.m., Wednesday, until the hour of the services.

Catherine Slattery

{Mrs. Catherine} Slattery, wife of {John} Slattery of Mitchell, passed away at the home of her son Edward {?} in that town at four o'clock {?}ay morning, Nov. 21st 1918, {due to} the infirmities of old age. Deceased was one of the old pioneers of Mitchell coming to that town in the early fifties, and continually living here ever since. She was one of that sturdy stock, that never shirked a burden, no matter how heavy it might be, but with a light heart and a steadfast determination to forge ahead and overcome any obstacle that came in the way of obtaining the goal of their ambition and that laudable ambition was to make a home in the wilderness for themselves and family. Reverses and difficulties they brushed aside, for they reasoned that if they failed today, they would succeed tomorrow, and the result of their labor is plainly seen by the casual observer as he travels the country roads of our country and sees the hills and dales dotted with beautiful buildings, large and spacious barns and everything denoting happiness and prosperity. Also actuated by a christian spirit and ready at all times to bow the head in adoration, when the word of God was spoken, their human weaknesses they had, but they always endeavored to keep pace with christianity and civilization and furthermore, they never forgot their fealty to the land of their adoption. Such were the pioneers of Wisconsin and the subject of our sketch was classed in that category.

Mrs. Slattery was born in Ireland in 1830 and came to this country when sixteen years of age, and after a few years residence in Montpelier, Vermont, where she was married to John Slattery, the family came to the town of Mitchell, Sheboygan County in 1861. She is survived by seven children as follows: Mrs. John Michaels, Mrs. Thomas Gahagan, Edward, Michael and Pat of the town of Mitchell, Dan of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Henry Gahagan of this city. Thomas and John Slattery died several years ago. There are twenty five grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren to also survive the deceased. The funeral service will be held today at St. Michael's church in the town of Mitchell with interment in St. Michael's cemetery. {article cut off}

Again we are called upon to record the death of another of Mitchell's most worthy citizens in the person of John Slattery. Death is always an unwelcome guest, but particularly in this case where the victim becomes indispensable to the welfare, not alone of his own family and friends, but of his neighbors and the arrival public. Many will mourn the death of John Slattery and those who knew him best will mourn him most. He was a lovable character so gentle and sympathetic that he left his happiness wherever he went. On coming in contact with him you always felt that charm you never feel except among educated Irishmen. While he was a man of ideals {he} was a strong man intellectually. He did his share in public affairs, he made his friends and smoothed over the rough places of the less fortunate, such men are a blessing and the world is better for their having him in it.

John Slattery was born in the city of Pittsburg, Pa., 1860. He came with his parents to the town of Mitchell when but two months old, where he has continuously lived to the time of his death, which occurred on July 31, 1911, after an illness of {7}? months. He was married to Miss Mary Michals in 1883. He is survived by his wife and 2 children, a son George and a daughter Miss Magdaline, also by his mother Mrs. John Slattery Sr. and 4 brothers Daniel of St. Louis, Michael, Edward and Patrick of the town of Mitchell and 3 sisters, Mrs. Henry Gahagan of Plymouth, Mrs. Thos. Tahagan {sic} and Mrs. Michals of Osceola.

The funeral was held from St. Michael's church in the town of Mitchell on the 3 o'clock inst. and was under the auspices of Court 12{??} of the Catholic Order of Foresters of Parnell and Court No. 814 of Eden. Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fisher. The pallbearers were John Lindsay, John Revine, {sic?}Michael Gilboy, Philip Ling {sic}?, John Mugan and Peter Murphy, all brother foresters. The funeral was directed by Jas. Alboy {sic}?. Friends from away who attended the funeral were Daniel and the Misses Slattery of St. Louis. Messrs. Ed, Geo. and Peter Flood of Eden who represented the Catholic Foresters of that town and Mr. Matt. Fallus, wife and son of Port Washington. The funeral was largely attended, the neighboring towns being fully represented. Those who knew John Slattery through life can testify to the many estimable qualities of mind and heart with which he {was} blessed. He was ever a gentleman, honest in his dealings with his fellow men, considerate and kindly always, and blessed with the spirit of true Christian charity, an affectionate father, a loving husband, a devout and faithful member of the Catholic {church} to whose teachings he strictly adhered in his home life as well as in his daily intercourse with the outside world, he was a modest man, retiring and reserved in his manner, an optimist in disposition, a good citizen, without an enemy. The widow and children have the sincere sympathy of the community in their great irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace.

Rudolph and Steven Serketich Victims of Tragedy This Morning

Two Sheboygan boys, aged 16 and 13, lost their lives by drowning at the mouth of Pigeon river this morning at about 10:30 o’clock.

They were Rudolph Serketich, 16, and Steven Serketich, 13, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Serketich, 2632 N. Twentieth street.

Identification was made through a check-up of bicycle licenses at the police station, as a bicycle bearing the license number 233 was found at the river, together with a little pile of clothing such as pants, shirts, shoes and a towel.

An unidentified person swimming in the lake near the mouth of the river heard the boys playing and then heard them scream for help. He ran to the nearest farm to telephone and Sheriff Walter A. Knopp and Office Walter Gannon were the first on the scene.

Later Officers Frank Fox and Joseph Bezoenik of the police department arrived in the ambulance with grappling hooks. Assistant Fire Chief August Sokoll and Firemen Clarence Henning and Herb Ploetz arrived with the fire company’s inhalator and William J. Gehr and Arthur Phenicie of the Wisconsin Public Service company arrived with their inhalator.

Recover Body After Hour

No one knew exactly where the two lads had gone into the water, so boats were obtained and police and firemen began to drag the river, which at that spot is full of holes and in some places 14 to 16 feet deep.

Fireman Herb Ploetz and Officer Joseph Bezoenik shed their clothes and tried swimming and diving for the bodies.

After about an hour the first body was brought to the surface, and it was that of the younger Serketich boy.

Firemen immediately applied the inhalator, but the lad had been under water for about an hour and nothing whatever could be done to save him. Meanwhile the dragging continued for the other boy and shortly before 12 o’clock this noon his body was found.

Another Serketich lad, the son of the older brother of the two victims, John Serketich was with the two lads when they started to swim and he stated that Steven was the first to step into a hole and that Rudolph grabbed him and tried to pull him out.

Rudolph gradually went into deeper water and finally both of them went under. The young Serketich boy, who was a nephew of the two victims, said they both came to the surface once or twice, struggling, and then disappeared. The lad then ran to his home and notified the family.

Acting Coroner William Van Zanten checked both lads and stated that death was due to drowning.

As soon as the license number of the bicycle was checked, the parents were notified and Mr. Serketich was brought to the scene.

The Rev. Father George Knackert was notified and he drove to the scene and administered the last rites of the church.

Survivors Listed

Survivors are the parents, three brothers, John, Sgt. Joseph Jr., and Paul, and four sisters, Mary, Angeline, Dorothy and Rose. Two brothers and two sisters preceded them in death, William, George, Veronica, and Eva.

Steven attended sixth grade at St. Dominic’s school and Rudolph was a freshman at North High school. Both attended St. Dominic’s church and were confirmed there. Both were members of John Serketich’s Boy Scout Troop No. 57.

Both boys were active in the family tambountzian orchestra and Rudolph played on the St. Dominic’s CYO baseball team.

St. Cloud man dies in house fire Monday

Mark H. Sippel, 27, died early Monday morning of carbon monoxide fumes after a fire gutted the upstairs apartment of a rural St. Cloud home.

The Sheboygan County coroner determined that asphyxiation was the cause of death for Sippel, a 1980 graduate of New Holstein High School.

Firefighters from St Anna Fire Department arrived at the home located at 2492 Lefeber Court at about 5:10 a.m. Monday after receiving a call from the occupant of the first floor of the two-story home.

Officials of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Departments said the fire started in the living room, and that was where the body was found. Sippel’s wife, Bonnie, and their two sons were not home at the time.

A state fire marshal was called in to determine the cause of the fire. Careless use of smoking materials was considered a possible cause.

Firefighters from fire departments in New Holstein, St. Cloud and Mt. Calvary assisted in fighting the fire.

Sippel was employed in the brass division at Kohler Company, and formerly worked at Lakeland Sports Center, Greenbush.
