Sudden but Peaceful Demise of a Highly Regarded Citizen - His Biography
The sudden death of Mr. August Hostman, of this city, occurred at midnight Tuesday night, at the age of sixty-four years. He had been afflicted with the asthma, which for two weeks previous to his demise, had been unusuallt troublesome, but Tuesday and until eleven o'clock that night, he felt much improved and even better than usual. In an hour afterward, he had dropped into the arms of Death, apparently as painlessly and peacefully as if falling asleep. Immediately upon discovering his condition, a physician was summoned, but he had passed away before the Doctor arrived. From the circumstances of his death and other indications, the physician decided that death had resulted from heart disease.
Mr. Hostman has been a resident of the city a number of years and was a highly respected citizen. He was born May 14th, 1819, at Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, and immigrated to this country in the fall of 1854, coming directly to Sheboygan, living there two years. The second year of his residence in that city he married. From Sheboygan, he moved to New Holstein, where he remained two years and then came to this city, where with his family he has since resided.
Deceased leaves a wife and five children, namely, Frank Hostman and Mrs. Jacob Kriegelstein, of Sheboygan, Herman, the business manager of The Reporter, and two younger children, August and Mary.
The funeral obsequies will be held at his late residence, at two o'clock this afternoon, Rev. Herzer officiating.

A Pioneer's Sudden Death
Mrs. Ellen Hagerty, one of the oldest residents of Sheboygan county, died at the home of her son Jerry, in Lima, Friday. She arose that morning at the usual time and apparently felt as well as ever. It was her custom to arise after the rest of the family and prepare her own breakfast. This she did that morning and ate a hearty meal. During the forenoon she had a vomiting spell which lasted for some time, and death ensued just about noon that day, from a stroke of apoplexy.
The funeral took place Monday from St. Rose's church at Five Corners, and the remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery. Father Salbreiter of Sheboygan Falls officiated, and Undertaker Schram of Plymouth had charge of the funeral.
Mrs. Hagerty was born in Ireland in 1816 and came to this county many years ago, settling with her husband in the wilds of Sheboygan county, in the town of Lima. Her husband passed away thirty-five years ago. Thirteen children were born to them, only six of whom survive as follows: Messrs. Jerry and Michael; and Mrs. P. E. Hand of Lyndon; Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Doherty, of Kansas; and Mrs. Winter of Michigan.
Mrs. Hagerty enjoyed the best of health and was hale and strong up to the time of her demise. She was no care to any one, always taking pride in looking out for herself, despite the fact that she had passed four score by nearly a decade. She and her family have ever had the respect of the community to which the lived so long.

On Monday afternoon at three o'clock occurred the death of Mr. Peter Hand at his home in this city. He had been ill only a few days of pleurisy, when he was taken away. Many people were not aware that he was ill, and the announcement of his demise came as something impossible or as highly improbable. It was difficult to realize that the lips which uttered so many kind greetings were still in death, that the heart which had beaten to the promptings of a sympathetic and genial nature was no longer to throb quicker when neighbors and friends were happy or to feel heavy when they were sad; and that he whose smile was a perennial reminder of the good will man owes to man was soon to occupy the narrow house of death. It is, indeed, a painful duty to record the passing of one who had in his lifetime done so much to make smoother the existence of his fellowmen on earth.
Mr. Hand is no more, and tomorrow, Thursday forenoon, his remains will be laid at rest in the Catholic cemetery just north of the city. The funeral will be held from the Catholic church at ten o'clock, and the Rev. Father Meyer will officiate.
Mr. Hand was born in Cavan county, Ireland on June 29, 1826, and at the age of twenty-one came to America. In 1854 his marriage with Miss Mary A. Lavey was solemnized. Soon after their marriage they settled in the town of Holland and until fifteen years ago continued to reside there. It was then that they came to Plymouth {Sheboygan county} to live, and this has been the home of Mr. Hand ever since. Mrs. Hand passed away several years ago. Besides the well-known lumber dealer, M.H. Hand of this city, the following children survive: Mrs. J. Hagerty, Lima; Sister Mathilde of St. Francis near Milwaukee; Philip Hand, Denver, Colorado; and Miss Katie Hand at home. The deceased also leaves a brother, Mr. Philip Hand of Lyndon and four sisters, Mrs. Edward Neugent of Sherman, and Sisters Martha, Celestine and Magdaline, all of Davenport, Iowa. Six grandchildren survive.
Mr. Hand was strictly honest and honorable in all his dealings. He was a man of strong convictions. He was a Democrat of the staunchest type. In religion he was a Roman Catholic and he was never known to waver in his faith.

A Large Funeral
Honor was paid to the memory of the late Rev. Father Hughes on Monday, July 24, when what of him was mortal was laid to rest in St. Michael's cemetery, Mitchell. More than a thousand were in attendance upon the obsequies, and St. Michael's church was wholly inadequate to hold the many in attendance. Over half of his faithful parishioners of Franklin came the long distance to pay their respects to their beloved pastor. The Rev. Father Burke, a former pastor of St. Michael's preached a sermon, and there were thirty priests in the sanctuary. The Parnell court of the Catholic Order of Foresters attended the obsequies in a body.
The immediate surviving relatives of the lamented Father Hughes are his mother, two brothers, Judge Martin Hughes, Hibbing, Minn., and James Hughes, Sheboygan; two sisters, Mrs. John Gannon of Greenbush and Mrs. Thomas Mangan, Mitchell.
Father Hughes was comparatively a young man. Few young men start out in life with better prospects of success. He was endowed with a bright intellect, considerable ability as an orator, and apparently a strong physique. His demise at a time which he should have had many more years of usefulness before him is, indeed, deplorable.
Many in our city and vicinity were pained to learn of the sudden death of Rev. Phelim F. Hughes, pastor of Holy Assumption Catholic church St. Martins, town of Franklin, which occurred at the Hotel Pfister, Milwaukee at six o'clock Wednesday night.
Father Hughes was eating dinner at the time with John Tillson, manager of the establishment and Ira Pethrick, one of the attendants of the Turkish bath parlors. Suddenly he began to cough and got up from the table, then sank to the floor. Death was instantaneous.
At 5:30 o'clock he had been to Trinity hospital to inquire after his friend, Rev. F.C. Ryan, who had undergone an operation. A half hour later he passed away.
Father Hughes was born in Mitchell forty-eight years ago and received his education at St. Francis seminary and at Dubuque Iowa. He had charges at St. Martins, St. Mary's in town of Greenfield and at St. Joseph's at Denoon, town of Muskego. He was a genial, hard working, well educated man who was beloved by his parishioners. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, Jas. Hughes of Sheboygan and Martin of Hibbing, Minn., and two sisters, Mrs. Jno. Gannon and Mrs. Tom Mangan of Mitchell.

After an illness of only five days Dr. James G. Hughes, 57 years old, a prominent Greeley physician, died at his home, 1708 Eleventh avenue at 11 o'clock last night. Death resulted from pneumonia and resulting heart failure.
Dr. Hughes was taken ill with what was believed to be a slight attack of grippe early in the week. He had been unconscious for 24 hours before death. Two close friends of Dr. Hughes, Drs. W.F. Spaulding and G.R. Pogue, gave him every possible medical aid.
Dr. Hughes graduated from Northwestern Medical college at Chicago in 1892. He came to Greeley 15 years ago. He was recognized thruout Colorado as an excellent surgeon. He was also a member of the American Medical association, the Colorado Medical association, and the Weld County Medical association. He had served as president and secretary of the latter. He was also a member of the B.P.O.E.
Dr. Hughes was for some time assistant superintendent of two state hospitals at Mendota and Oshkosh, Wis. Following that he practiced in Port Arthur, Texas, and Janesville, Wis. He was married to Miss Blanche Bennett in Port Arthur 21 years ago.
Dr. Hughes had recently been appointed chairman and surgical member of the medical advisory board for the draft in Weld county.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Hughes, three daughters, Clara, Margaret and Eleanor, and one son, Bennet Hughes.
Clara Hughes who has been attending a girl's school in Washington, D.C., is expected in Greeley Sunday. No arrangements for the funeral have been made pending her arrival.
The above was taken from the Greeley, Colo., paper of recent date and refers to Dr. James G. Hughes, who was well and favorably known in Sheboygan County, because of the fact that he was born in the town of Mitchell and spent his boyhood days there. After attending the public schools in Mitchell he took a course at the Valparaiso, Ind., University which fitted him for the higher studies he undertook at the Northwestern Medical College at Chicago. How well he accomplished his life's efforts is well attested by the account given in the Greeley paper. The deceased was a brother of David, John and William Hughes, Mrs. Michael Crosby and Mary Hughes and Mrs. Elinore Bowser, now deceased. Mrs. Bowser passed away some years ago at Colby. The death of Dr. Hughes occurred on January 4th and the bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends of the family.

Stricken After Accident, Tavern Operator Dies
A 53-year-old Sheboygan man who recently took over the operation of Judge's Tavern at 812 Michigan Ave., died at Memorial Hospital shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, less than an hour after his car was involved in a traffic mishap less than three blocks from his home.
He was William O. {Hootch} Hoehnke of 2724 Lakeshore Dr.
Dr. Reed M. Simpson, Sheboygan County coroner, said the death was caused by "some kind of stroke," and would not be listed as a traffic fatality.
He said there would be no autopsy.
An attending physician had theorized Hoehnke's death was caused by severe internal bleeding, possibly from a ruptured spleen. But he told investigating police officers that the exact cause of death could only be determined by performing an autopsy.
The traffic accident occurred at 5:08 p.m. in the 2400 block of Lakeshore Drive.
Mr. Hoehnke was driving south on Lakeshore Dr. when his 1965 Mercury ran into the rear of a 1965 Cadillac parked ....
The Cadillac was pushed over the curbing where it knocked down a speed zone sign, then crossed over Lakeshore Dr. and came to a stop when it struck a utility pole on the east side of the street. The vehicle traveled 206 feet after being struck by the Hoehnke car.
Both vehicles were badly damaged.
Following the mishap Hoehnke walked around at the scene and talked with spectators, but suddenly complained of abdominal pains, laid down on the ground and lost consciousness.
Police said he regained consciousness while in the ambulance and talked with the ambulance attendants briefly before again lossing consciousness.
Investigating officers who went to Memorial Hospital to talk with Hoehnke at 6 p.m. learned that he had died just a few moments before their arrival.
Mr. Hoehnke, a native of Sheboygan, was born Aug. 17, 1913, a son of Mrs. Mary and the late William Hoehnke. He married Hazel Bennink on Nov. 2, 1935, at Woodstock, Ill.
For many years he was employed at the Armour Leather Co. before going into the tavern business.
Surviving are his wife; his mother, and two sisters, Mrs. Karl Leicht and Mrs. Fred Grasse, all of Sheboygan. A brother preceded him in death.

Boy, Only Survivor of Wisconsin Crash, May Die
Special to The New York Times
New London, Wis. - Sept. 1. - Six persons were killed and a seventh probably fatally injured this afternoon when a southbound Chicago & North Western passenger train crashed into an automobile on a county grade one mile north of here. The car was carried 100 yards down the track. William Haen was driving.
The dead are:
Haen, William, 40 years old, of Sheboygan, Wis.
Haen, Mrs. William, his wife.
Haen, Raymond, 16 years old, a son.
Haen, Ruth, 3 years old, a daughter.
Koene, Peter, 35 years old, of Sheboygan.
Koene, Mrs. Peter, 33 years old, his wife.
The injured person is William Haen, 18 years old, fifth member of the Haen family. According to policemen of this city who rushed to the scene, all but two of the dead had expired when the ambulances arrived. These two were Mrs. Haen and Peter Koene. They were taking the last sacrament from a priest who was a passenger on the train. Within an hour after the accident they died.
William Haen was taken to a hospital in Appleton, 12 miles south of here. Physicians said there was little hope for his life.
Note: I was told of this incident by my mother. During the course of my research of the Haen/Rammer/Thiel families {Sheboygan County}, I decided to find out the facts. It took me a while to locate this because no one recalled the location of this incident! Of all sources, I located this in The New York Times, apparently an often over-looked source for genealogists. William Haen, Sr. & Mrs. Peter {Dorothea} Koene were siblings. They were going to Eland, Jct., Wis. to visit thier brothers, Frank & John. It has been said that William Haen, Jr. was driving the car.

There is a picture of Peter Huisheere in this article. Also a picture of the first post office in the town of Holland
Peter Huisheere, Sr., one of the pioneer invaders of the town of Holland and who ranks among the most prominent citizens of that town, quietly observed his ninetieth anniversary of his birth last Wednesday, April 15th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Grotenhuis in the village of Cedar Grove.
The subject of our sketch was born in Zeeland, Holland, Europe on April 15, 1824. His parents died when he was very young and the responsibilities of the conquest of life was thrown upon him when he was but a mere boy. He was thus deprived of an opportunity for an education, having never attended school a day in his career, but he was ambitious and not afraid of work, with the result, that slowly, but surely he mastered a self-education that fully enabled him to deal with the business world in his manhood days.
The desire to do something for himself, resulted in the decision of Mr. Huisheere to leave his native land for America, which he did on April 6, 185{1}?, sailing on a three-masted vessel of the type of those days. He reached New York on June 20 the and continued his way to Holland, Erie county in that state. A few months later he was married to Miss Aderjane Elias, also a native of Zeeland, and who embarked for America on the same vessel with her husband. He there secured employment as a tanner and remained there for four years, when the desire to go further west became so strong that the family went to Milwaukee where he was successful in securing similar employment.
The aim to follow the agriculture industry was at all times foremost within the desires of this ambitious pioneer and shortly after coming to Milwaukee he purchased a 40 acre tract of woodland in the town of Holland, which he sold two years later and purchased the tract that has been his home for so many years and which he disposed of after the death of his valuable helpmeet {sic} in December 1911.
Notwithstanding the fact of his lack of education Mr. Huisheere was elected assessor of the town of Holland in the second year of his residence there. Some years later he followed the business of an auctioneer and he was highly successful, having been able to speak three languages and the good humor that always pervaded his presence seemed to be a magnet to add to the scope of his success in everything which he undertook. He continued as an auctioneer until about twenty-five years ago, since which time he has lived a retired life, which the frugality of his earlier days has amply permitted him to do.
Mr. Huisheere and his wife passed through all the trials that befell the citizens of more than a half century ago. The conversion of the woodland to that of productive farming land, was not accomplished in mere imaginations but he was equal to the task and realized his ambition in consequence. He tells of many trips that he made from his home to Milwaukee to buy necessaries of life, which he made on foot. There was danger as well as hardship in this mode of travel at that time, because of the wild animals and Indians, who roamed the forests.
The worthy couple reared a family of six children of which but three survive: Mrs. Wm. Grotenhuis with whom he resides, P. Huisheere, also of Cedar Grove, and Mrs. Mary Schiereck of Sheboygan Falls. All of the children spent last Sunday with him, together with a number of his grandchildren. Another company of old time friends and neighbors gathered with him on Wednesday to help him celebrate his entrance into the ninetieth milestone of life's journey.
Mr. Huisheere's health is remarkably good considering his advanced years and his mind is clear and bright as a new minted dollar. He enjoys the companionship of his old friends as much as ever and his good natured and joking disposition has not waned in the least.
His many friends hope that he may be able to enter into the centennial of his earthly career with the same good health and joviality in which he scored four-score and ten.
The photo reproduction of the log house in the picture represents the early abode of Mr. and Mrs. Huisheere, the pioneer types who are seen in the foreground and this building also served the first post office in the town of Holland. The structure was razed a couple of months ago.

Frederick O. Horneck died Christmas Day at his home, 20 Selma Street after a short illness.
Mr. Horneck was born October 2, 1854 in the town of Rhine, a son of Philip Horneck, who came from Germany and Mrs. Katherine Hartman Horneck.
He learned the machinist trade at the old Schwartz foundry, Plymouth. From here he went to Thiensville and after working there for a time, went to Rhine Center in 1879, where he owned and operated a blacksmith shop until 1908. In that year, he moved to Plymouth and his family wished him to retire from active labor, but he was not satisfied with idleness and it was but a short time before he had secured work with the Plymouth Foundry & Machine Company and worked there until two weeks ago. Had he remained until next summer he would have been employed by the foundry for twenty years.
He married Mary Leonard, October 12, 1880. She died June 23, 1910. On Jan. 25, 1913, he married Mrs. Amelia Schierstedt, who survives him as do the following children:
Laura Horneck at home; Walter Horneck, Rhine Center; Mrs. O. C. Heidemann, Cedar Lake; Mrs. Norman Schierstedt, Plymouth; Norman J. Horneck, Sheboygan; Alvin Schierstedt, Chicago; and Norman Schierstedt, Plymouth. One son, Grover Horneck preceded him in death, Aug. 10, 1926. He leaves 11 grand- children. Also the following brothers and sisters: Geo. Horneck, Marshfield, Wis.; Henry Horneck, Rhine; Edward Horneck, Kiel; Julius Horneck, Rhine; and Robert Horneck, Elkhart Lake; Mrs. Conrad Eckelman, Rhine; Mrs. Emma Rothe and Mrs. Henry Klein, Town of Herman.
A brother, Arthur Horneck, died Dec. 20, 1917.
The funeral was held at one o'clock today at the home, Rev. M. Schmidt of the Lutheran church, conducting the services at the house, and Rev. Thomas of Rhine, the services in Rhine Center, where the interment took place. The pall bearers were nephews; Erwin, Gordon and Herbert Horneck, Dewey Rothe, Arthur Reineck and Walter Leonard.
Dr. R. W. Robertson, head of the establishment where Mr. Horneck was employed so many years said of the passing of one of the oldest employees of the firm:
In the death of Fred Horneck, not only does the Plymouth Foundry and Machine Company lose a long time faithful employee, but Plymouth and Sheboygan County lose one of their most staunch and reliable citizens.
Mr. Horneck was the eldest of a large family of sturdy pioneer German stock settling in the Town of Rhine in the early days of Sheboygan County, and has since been active and prosperous in the growth, development and progress of that rich section of the County.
Fritz has worked for the Plymouth Foundry and Machine Company ever since its organization in 1911, and for several years previous to that time worked in the same capacity as Feed Cutter mechanic for our predecessors, F. Thurman & Company. I have, therefore, been closely associated with him for the past sixteen years. He was always industrious, faithful to his job and thoroughly dependable in all of his duties.
As an associate he always had the respect and good will of the rest of the employees or co-workers. Seldom do we find a life so fully rounded out with the usefulness in so many years of service, hardly ever missing any time at his task up to within eleven days before he punched his time card on the clock of eternity on Christmas Day, and entered into the service of his eternal Master.
We have lost a faithful employee, and we know how much he will be missed, but the reward of a life well spent and immortal life are now his.
His immediate family and relatives have this abiding consolation although we sympathize with them in this separation.
R. W. Robertson

Thomas Heraty was born in County Mayo, Ireland, December 10, 1836, and came to this country at the age of ten with his parents. His early education was in Ireland, and at Falley seminary, New York.
In 1852, the family settled in the town of Mitchell, and for two years Mr. Heraty and his father labored hard to clear a part of the land, following which Mr. Heraty went back to New York to enter the employ of a railroad company. For seven summers he was so employed, teaching school during the winter months. He then returned to this county upon the death of his father.
On May 24, 1865, his union with Miss Mary A. Scanlon was solemnized. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Heraty, six of whom survive with the mother as follows: John and Robert on the homestead; James and Dan, also of Mitchell; Miss Alice Heraty, of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Benno Wifler of Batavia. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. John O’Connell, of Mitchell, and four grandchildren.
Mr. Heraty was one of the progressive residents of the county. He was a well-informed man, and a student. He was always active in furthering the interests of his town, and did much for its advancement.

Another golden star in a home. This morning a message came from Camp Taylor, Kentucky, announcing the death of Martin Hilleman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hilleman, 434 Lincoln avenue, and who up to the time he left for camp was Cashier and Manager of the State Bank of Sheboygan Falls. Death was due to Spanish Infuenza and pneumonia from which he had been sufferer for the past two weeks. Henry Hilleman the father, and the wife of the young soldier were at his bedside when the end came, the father wired the news to the members of the family in this city.
The funeral party will arrive in this city Saturday morning and the body will be removed to the family residence, Lincoln avenue. In all probability the funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon.
When a telegram came announcing his condition as serious, Mr. Hilleman and Mrs. Martin Hilleman left immediately for Camp Taylor and arrived and were at his bedside when he passed away.
The decedent was born in Menominee, Michigan , twenty eight years ago and came with his parents to Sheboyban twenty-two years ago. When the State Bank of Sheboygan Falls was organized in May, 1910, Martin entered the employment of the bank and in March 1912, was made Cashier and in January, 1915 manager, two of the most responsible positions in the institution. He was a young man who easily familiarized himself with the banking business and at the time of entering the service the State Bank of Sheboygan Falls lost a most efficient official.
On July 22, last he left for Camp Taylor and since that time has been stationed there as a member of the 30th Observation Battery F. A. Co. T. S. being assigned to special duty.
About six weeks ago, Martin was confined to the hospital for two weeks suffering from pneumonia. After partially recovering from the illness, he secured a thirteen day furlough and came her seeking relaxation and trying to recuperate from the ailment.
He never thoroughly recovered from the sickness and on Sept. 23rd was stricken with the Spanish influenza.
Mr. Hilleman, Sr. and the wife of the young man departed for Camp Taylor, upon receiving the news that his condition was serious. The deceased was first married to July 26, 1913 to Miss Helen Van Ouerkerk, who died August 19, 1914. He was then married on December 31, 1917 to Miss Enola Volk of Plymouth. The survivors are his wife, Mrs.Enola Hillemann; daughter Helen Van Ouerkerk Hilleman, 4 years old; his parents; two sisters, Mrs. R. D. Owen and Mrs. O. E. Gram, both of Milwaukee and one brother Henry Hilleman who is stationed at Pelham Bay Park, New York, where he is in quarantine, being in tahe services of the navy. The quarantine was caused by the Spanish Infleunza. Henry is expected to obtain a release in spite of the quarantine at the station and he probably will arrive here late Saturday afternoon or night.
The death of the young man was a great shock to the people of this city and throughout the county. Through his connection with the State Bank of Sheboygan Falls as Cashier and manager he acquired and extensive acquaintanceship among the dairy interest of the county. He had a pleasing personality and was popular. The Press joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved members of the family, whose only consolation is that he gave his life for his country, just as much so as if he was fighting in France.
