May Be A Case Of Murder
Message From Coroner Tells Of Death But Gives No Particulars - - Was Going To Iowa And Word Of His Death Comes From Illinois Town
Chief of Police Scheck received a telegram Sunday from Stockton, Ill., notifying him of the death of Fred Arndt which had occurred in that place and asking him to locate relatives.
Chief Scheck after some searching ascertained that the young man was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arndt of the town of Mosel and they were notified and a brother left for that place last evening.
The relatives believe that the young man met with foul play as he was enroute to Independence, Iowa to visit relatives, having left Elkhart Lake last Friday. He was employed by his brother in the blacksmith shop there and last week made up his mind to take a vacation. He had $100 on his person. Nothing more was heard from him until the telegram came Sunday from the coroner of Stockton, Ill., which is a small place.
Some alarm was felt today when no word was received from the other brother, who promised to wire the particulars upon his arrival. The father and a brother were in the city today anxiously awaiting a message from Stockton, Ill.
The decedent was 23 years of age and resided with his parents in the town of Mosel until he went to Elkhart Lake to work for his brother. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of their many friends.
Arndt Took His Life
Left No Word To Relatives
Shot Himself Through The Head While On The Train Going To Independence, Iowa - - Body Brought To Mosel For Interment.
Fred Arndt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arndt of the town of Mosel, committed suicide while enroute to Independence, Iowa to visit relatives.
When the brother of the dead man arrived at Stockton, Ill., he learned the full facts concerning the case. Shortly before the train reached Stockton, Arndt entered the lavatory and immediately after the closing of the door a shot was heard and when this fact was brought to the attention of the conductor the door was opened and Arndt was found dead. He had shot himself through the head. As far as can be learned he had made no complaint of being ill or had he shown any signs of being despondent.
The body was taken in charge by the authorities at Stockton and word sent to police in this city with the result that the relatives were located. The remains arrived in this city last evening and were taken to the Undertaking Parlors of M. Kroos and Son. The body was prepared for burial and was taken out to the family home this afternoon.
The young man was 23 years of age last May and had been employed by his brother in his blacksmith shop at Elkhart Lake until last week when he left for Iowa. His parents did not know that he had left until the message was received of his death at Stockton, Ill. As far as can be learned he had never quarreled with any person and seemed of cheerful disposition. When he set out for Iowa he had about $140 on his person and was going to remain in Iowa if he could secure a position. The relatives have the sympathy of their many friends in this hour of their deep affliction.

He took his meals at the boarding house of Mrs. M. Bulkow but had been feeling ill and had been eating very little. When he didn’t show up for his meals on Wednesday and no one had seen him, Mrs. Bulkow went to his residence and found his dead body and coroner Feagan was notified. A note was found in which Arnemann declared that he was sick and the end was near. In another paper he had written his will. His heirs receive a life insurance policy of $1200.00.
