The town of Scott forms the southwest corner of Sheboygan county. Several tributaries of the Milwaukee river flow through the area, providing ample moisture for the surrounding territory. The history of the town is closely allied with that of the town of Sherman, the latter originally having been part of the town up to 1850, when the township was divided. Sherman was separated, but the west half remained the name of Scott.

Although former histories state that John CLEAVES, from New York, who located on Section 26 in the spring of 1847, was the first settler in the town, there seems to be proof that in 1846, John G. AUPPERLE came to the town and settled in Section 33(?). Other pioneers who came in 1847 were Jacob REIS, who settled on Sections 22 and 23, Henry ??DER on Section 31; Henry NUSZ on Section ??; Ezra FLOYD and a Mr. DUNHAM.

The first birth in the town was in the family of Ezra FLOYD, in the summer of 1848, and the first death was that of Mr. DUNHAM in the same year.

The first school was established under the tutelage of the Misses Elizabeth HAZELTON and Maria MALONEY.

The first town meeting was held in April, 1850, R. C. BRAZLETON being elected the first chairman of the town.

Batavia is the only village of importance in the township, although there is another small hamlet called Beechwood.

The town of Scott supports five district and two joint district schools, with a combined enrollment, according to the last census, of 428 pupils.

One of the first business men of which there is an authentic record was David STOLPER, who after the Civil war, returned to Batavia and engaged in shoemaking, merchandising and hotel-keeping. Mr. STOLPER came to Sheboygan county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb STOLPER, in 1855, the family settling on a farm in the town of Sherman.

Isaac BRAZLETON was appointed postmaster at Batavia in 1863 and except for the four years of President Cleveland's first term, served in that office until about the year 1904.

The first business man to locate in Batavia were David STOLPER, hotel, shoe shop and store; J. W. LIEBENSTEIN, saw-mill; Gottlieb TRADER, blacksmith; Louis ROSKKOPF, G. A. LEIFER and Isaac BRAZELTON, general store and post office.

Wallie DANFORTH owned and operated the first cheese factory in the town. The factory was later destroyed by fire.

Adolph VOGELSANG carried on business in the building now occupied as a harness shop by Gerhard LIEFBROER.

John M. SAEMANN, later of Sheboygan, was the first president elected in the village. He was succeeded by J. W. LIEBENSTEIN in 1895 and the latter served in this capacity longer than any other man in Sheboygan county.

W. G. FIRME started in a small way making wagons in the village of Batavia, in 1897. The business proved successful from the start, and to provide room for expansion, Mr. FIRME, in 1910, erected the building which he now occupies. Further expansion was found necessary in 1913, and another addition was erected. With each addition to the building more machinery was installed to properly handle the work.

Mr. FIRME deals in everything connected with woodwork, including the making and repairing of wagons, carriages, etc.

Oswald VOIGT is successor to a general merchandise store started many years ago in Batavia by STOLPER Bros. In 1907, Oswald VOIGT and his brother, William, Jr., purchased the business, which they carried on under the firm name of VOIGT Bros. until 1914, at which time William disposed of his interest in the business and moved to Plymouth, Oswald becoming the sole owner of the store. In 1912, the business having increased beyond the capacity of the original store building, VOIGT Bros. had the present modern and more spacious structure erected in its place.

In addition to a general line of dry goods, groceries, novelties and furnishings, Oswald VOIGT carries a line of men's, women's and children's footwear.

In point of continuous years in business, the firm of Mrs. G. A. LEIFER & Son, is the oldest established business in Batavia. The business was started by the late G. A. LEIFER in 1874, and consisted of general merchandise. In 1901, Mr. LEIFER erected a new building directly north of the original store, in which he carried on a furniture store and undertaking parlor in connection with his general store. Mr. LEIFER served two terms as postmaster of Batavia, under President Cleveland's administrations. He was one of the most widely known men residing in that Section of the county. He passed away on January 5, 1924.

Besides general merchandise and furniture, the firm deals extensively in hardware.

Messrs. KAISER & EMLEY, owners of the Batavia Auto Service, at Batavia, established the business there in 1920, at which time they erected the building now occupied by them as an automobile salesroom and service station. Prior to forming a partnership with Mr. EMLEY, and starting the business at Batavia, O. G. KAISER conducted a garage at Beechwood. KAISER & EMLEY are authorized agents in that locality for the Ford line of motor cars, and also deal in U.S.L. batteries, radio sets and radio equipment.

The St. Stephen's Lutheran church building in Batavia was erected in 1884. The first pastor to serve the congregation was the Rev. Mr. WAMBSGANS, of Sheboygan. He was followed by the Rev. Mr. HAHNEL. Other pastors in regular order of succession were the Rev. Mr. LUEKEMAN; Rev. Mr. HANON; Rev. Mr. HESCHTE; and the present pastor, the Rev. H. F. GRUELL.

The first services of the Evangelical church at Batavia were held at the north end of town; but in 1871, the congregation sold their building to the Methodist Episcopal congregation and with the proceeds derived from the sale, purchased the house of worship owned by the United Brethren, which is located in the center of the village. A few years ago, the congregation bought back their original house of worship which had been sold to the Methodists, moved the edifice and attached it to the building purchased from the United Brethren. The two buildings were then remodeled, together forming a commodious and comfortable edifice. The Rev. G. A. BLOEDE is the present pastor.
