Highly Respected Resident of Waldo Hangs Himself in Barn of Tom Alcox Last Evening - - Had Been Acting Strangely.

John Halter, a pioneer of this county, having resided the greater portion of his lifetime in Lima, committed suicide last evening by hanging himself in the barn of Tom Alcox of Waldo.

John Devine employed by Mr. Alcox, had occasion to go out into the barn about 8:30 last evening and discovered the lifeless body. He notified Mr. Alcox and others who were present at the time and the body was cut down and a physician summoned. Though the body was still warm life was extinct.

Mr. Alcox notified his brother, William, who resides at Sheboygan Falls and left for Waldo at once completing arrangements for the funeral. The decedent is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Allman of this city and his brother at the Falls. Another brother died a few years ago.

Mr. Halter disposed of his farm in Lima a few years ago and for some period had made his home at the hotel of Mr. Alcox. He was a gentleman of pleasing address and during his sojourn in Waldo had made many friends. He was 65 years of age and came to stop with Mr. Alcox last February. His health had been very good up to within the last couple of weeks when he seemed to undergo a change, and his actions were strange at times, Wednesday nothing out of the ordinary was noticed. Shortly after the supper hour he went outside and this was the last seen of him alive.

Coroner Feagan who was summoned spent the day at Waldo taking the evidence of Mr. Alcox, John Devine and others who were present last evening. The statement of the physician summoned was also taken down by Coroner Feagan.

Mr. Halter was a man who had acquired a comfortable fortune by careful management of his business affairs, and there is little question but what the unfortunate happening was the result of a disordered mind.
