The Lily of the Valley
By Ida Gerhard
A young princess named Lily, lived in a city which was situated between two mountains. Her mother being dead, she
lived with her father, the king.
One day it was announced that the king would give a grand ball in honor of the princess' twentieth birthday. All the
earls, dukes, and kings in the country were invited.
As the day drew near, everybody in the village and neighboring villages was excited over the coming event. All the
peasants were discussing the gown and jewels of the princess.
On the eve of the ball the princess' beauty attracted the attention of all present. She looked very beautiful in a
dress of white satin trimmed with silver spangels, with a crown of pearls and rubies on her beautiful locks of gold.
She had also a necklace of pearls and on her bosom was a pin, a large white pearl, the largest and most expensive of
all the king's jewels, and an heirloom in the family.
Later in the evening when most of the guests had left, the princess and a young gentleman took a stroll in the
gardens. His name was Sir Velligo. She cared nothing for any of the other earls or kings, only for this knight.
On returning from their walk all at once the princess exclaimed, "Oh! where is my pin? I must have lost it." She
then sent two of her maids to search for it along the path they had taken; but they did not find it, and they sought
for it many more days, but it never was found.
Many years after the eve of the ball Sir Vellijo, the son of princess Lily, came to the place where his mother had
lived and married. While walking along and thinking about the life of his mother, he came upon some beautiful white
flowers. Thinking that perhaps these flowers had sprung up from the pearl that had been lost by his mother, he named
them Lily-of-the-Valley. The place being in a beautiful valley, and his mother's name Lily, gave him the thought of
the name.
