Wisconsin. He married Martha (Maatje) Bienerveldt-Bienefelt, daughter of Johannes Bienefelt And Pieternella Kooreman. She was born 1815, and died 08 Aug 1875 in Sheboygan Co. Wisconsin.

From the writings of Ruth:

The surname, VanDerJagt, means "of the hunt" It was brought to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin by Cornelius and Martha (Maatje Bunefeltt) or Bienerveldt VanderJagt when they came to America from the village of Burg, on the island of Schouwen, province of Zeeland, Holland in 1849.

Cornelius and Martha, and their six children, sailed from Alvord Schloss for New York.

The voyage was made in a three - mast sailing vessel of American make, and took some twenty-eight days, landing in New York. During the passage one of their children, a little girl two years of age (born in 1847) was taken sick, died and was buried at sea. Her name was not given in the recorded history of Sheboygan County.

{Note: from Roberta the little girls name was: Adaariantje). While crossing the Atlantic Ocean the family experienced one storm of great severity, which lasted twenty-four hours, terrifying the five hundred passengers on board.

After a two weeks stay in New York city, Mr. Van Der Jagt took his family to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, going by way of Buffalo and the Great Lakes. When they arrived in Sheboygan, they stopped several days at the Wisconsin House, which was kept by Joseph Schrage. Then they rented a house until Cornelius had time to find their new home. Six weeks later the family moved to the town of Holland whre the father purchased eighty acres of heavily timbered land. There a 20 x 30" log house was built where the family lived for fifteen years. Later, the log house was replaced by a more modern home.

Cornelius VanderJagt was a painter by trade and followed that vocation until his advanced years. One of his last projects was painting the 56' x 48' barn on the old homestead. He was seventy-four years old at the time.

According to the book, Portrait and Biographical Record of Sheboygan County, Cornelius and his wife became the parents of 13 children, eight sons, and five daughters.

During the seach at the County Court House no record was found of the last seven children, four sons and three daughters, who apparently were born in this country after the family arrived in 1849. Evidently none of them survived the hardships of the New World. (see note below R.L.)

(Note from Roberta Lewis,I believe the above statement is in error, where she got 13 children is beyond me, I have copies of the ship record showing the children our genealogy is based on are the only ones, that came with them they lost the little girl age 2 at sea, but the others survived, and they had Cornelius age 13, Johannes age 11,Leendert age 10,Pieter age 8, Willhelmina age 4, Adriaantje age 2, so five children came with them to America, and only five)

County births were first recorded at the Court House in 1852. However, the first birth recorded in the Van Der Jagt family was for a daughter, Maatje, born in 1869 (a generation later) to one of Cornelius and Martha's sons, Peter, and his first wife, Susan. The first Van Der Jagt death recorded was in 1877.

This genealogy, then is based upon the families of the first five and only surviving children who came to America with their parents in 1849.

(1) Cornelius, Jr. (born in the village of Zierikzee, province of Schouwen, Holland in 1834) who became a fisherman; (2) John, (born in the village of Burg, province of Schouwen, Holland in 1837) who was a farmer of Holland Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin; (3) Leonard, (born in the province of Zeeland, Holland in 1839) who was also a farmer of this section of the County; (4) Peter, born in Holland in 1842) who after the death of his first wife, married again and became a farmer in St. Croix County, Wisconsin; (5) and Wilhelmina "Minnie", (born 1845) who married John DeMaster, a dealer in agricultural implements and a well-known farmer of Sheboygan County.

"There are two instances of discrpancy in dates. First, on the death registration of the original Cornelius, his birth was recorded as December 19, 1812, and his death as February 1, 1888. On his tombston in the Walvoord Cemetery, in Cedar Grove, his birth year was recorded as 1814 with the date of death as February 1, 1889. On the death registration his father's name is recorded as being Jan M. and his mothers given name as being Catholina.

Notes on the ship and the arrival in New York.

The ship they came on was the Bark Rose Standish, an American Made, and the ship owned by Wambersie Shipping Co.

Arriving in New York meant disembarkation in Castle Garden - in the southern part of Manhattan, a large building of the government for the reception of emigrants.

Later, in 1892, the reception was on an island named Ellis Island.

I found they did arrive at Castle Garden, 13 September 1849. From New York they went to Buffalo.

The sailing ship they came on was the Bark Rose Standish, and a bark is a three masted vessel with the foremast and mainmast square rigged and the mizzenmast fore and aft rigged. The mizzenmast carries no yards; there is a hoist and lower fore-and-aft sail and a gaff topsail.

I found an article which I will quote here regarding the cost and time of the voyage. Upon leaving Rotterdam for the sea, in 1830 a canal was dug through the island of Voorne: the Voornsche Kanaal. The ships could reach the sea more easily now by the town of Hellevoetsluis. Later on, in 1866, the digging of the Nieuwe Waterweg started and in 1872 ships went directly from Rotterdam to the sea.

Ships passing through the Voornsche Kanaal were registered, arriving at Hellevoetsluis the sailing ships had to wait for a favourable wind, before leaving Europe. The last silhouetter the emigrants saw of home-land was the silhouette of the town of Hellevoetsluis. With it's typical dutch mills on the walls, the Magazine of the dutch Navy and the many masts of the ships in the harbour. Depending on weather conditions, the emigrants arrived after 4 to 5 weeks in New York.

For the sea-voyage one had to pay 60 guilders, for most emigrants, a large sum of money and the provision on board was sometimes very bad. Note: Only in 1861 did new laws go into force,everyone then had to register in the town he was leaving, there was minimum amount of space aboard for every person, and food had to be provided" however our family came before these new laws went into effect. John Van Der Jagt, Civil War Veteran Answers Call

John Van Der Jagt, one of the last of the Civil War veterans of Sheboygan county, died at the home of his son, Peter Van Jagt, at Cedar Grove, Friday, after an illness of four months. He celebrated his eighty-fifth birthday on June 5.

Mr. Van Der Jagt was a native of Burg, province of Schouwen, Holland. He was born June 5, 1837, and at the age of twelve he accompanied his parents and five other children to the United States, coming directly to Sheboygan County. During the voyage to America, a baby sister became ill and died and was buried at sea.

Mr. Van Der Jagt at one time described a storm which the passengers aboard ship experienced while at sea, one that terrified all on board. He stated that for a time it was feared that the ship would be wrecked. The storm was weathered, however, and they all landed safely.

Mr. Van Der Jagt attended school in the old log school house in section 26, town of Holland. His educational advantages were limited to three months during the winter seasons. He early learned to assist in the work his father's farm, and he did that until he grew to manhood.

On March 4, 1862, Mr. Van Der Jagt married Miss Josephine De Master, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Peter DeMaster. They became the parents of twelve children, eight of whom are living. They are Peter, Cornelius, Mrs. John Grotenhuis, and Mrs. Ed Thuene, Cedar Grove; Mrs. J. Sheean and Miss Minnie, Milwaukee; and John of Minneapolis.

Mr. and Mrs. Van Der Jagt began their wedded life in a log cabin, which Mr. Van Der Jagt built on his farm in the town of Holland.

About 1880 a new home was erected, but only a few years were spent there. Mrs. Van Der Jagt was called by death on March 14, 1888.

When President Lincoln called for volunteers to put down the rebellion of the south, Mr. Van Der Jagt was among the first who made the response and entered the service of his adopted country. He served as a soldier with honor to himself and family to the Union.

Politically Mr. Van Der Jagt was a republican and he supported the principles advocated by the party. He and his family attended the First Presbyterian church of Cedar Grove, in which they took an active part. Mr. Van Der Jagt was well known and highly respected all through the secion of the county in which he lived.

Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian church Monday at 1:30 o'clock and burial will be made in the Walvoord Cemetery.

Note:

The published book Portrait and Biographical Record of Sheboygan County quotes his birth as January 18, 1889. However, according to the U.S. Army, in which Morris Cornelius lost his life during World War I, his age at time of death in August 1918, was 27 and 8/12 years. This would make his birth occuring in December of 1890. Because of this conflict, the records at the Veterans Administration office in Sheboygan were also checked and there it was found his birth date was recorded as January 19, 1980.

Notes for Priscilla Adreanna Landaal:

Grandma Van was adopted, she had siblings which she never located again. Grandpa VanderJagt hired detectives and others to help her locate them but she never again found her sisters or brother, not sure how many she had, but know they were separated when put in orphanage, and she was adopted by Mrs. Landaal they were very well off and provided a good home for her, but she always missed finding her siblings, and she died without finding them, this is sad but true.

Believe her natural father was a William Williams and he worked for the railroad out of Kansas City, Kansas, I have never been able to trace this either. {R. L.} We are not sure on this but there is some evidence that points to that information.

Below is information on my grandmother and her family or what I have from records that my grandfather had found.

My grandmother and I shared a birthday April 25th so I am sure that was my grandmother she is referring to. This is the most important thing we have found.

So it looks like May died and other than William being an Engineer on railroad have no idea what other children there were, how many, how old, or where they went, why he didn't keep them, maybe it was just two girls, not sure, Gertie which is probably my grandmother Priscilla, and Irene, she mentioned, my grandmother thought there were more. I just hope and pray one day I can find out the answers to these questions.

Important information found on the application for employment. Shows his age and description, also wife as May Williams and address of St. Paul also lists his parent as Fred Williams of Clay Center Kansas, these are very important clues to this family, still lots of work to be done here.

A pretty wedding took place at the home of Mrs. G. Landaal, Wednesday at high noon, when her daughter, Priscilla, was united in marriage to Mr. John VanderJagt, Rev. Jongeneel officiating. The bride wore white embroidered net over white taffeta and carried brides' roses.

The bridesmaids were Miss Jennie Gysbers and Miss Josie DeMaster, cousin of the groom. The groomsmen were Audley Stronks and Matt DeMaster, cousin of the groom.

The bridesmaids were dressed in pink and white and carried pink carnations.

The house was prettily decorated in white and pink flowers.

Only near realatives were present.

Immediately after the ceremony a dainty dinner was served, afterwhich the happy couople for their wedding trip to Milwaukee, Sheboygan, and other places in the eastern part of the state, where they will remain for a month.

Their future home will be in Minneapolis.
