Hi
story and Description
of St. Michael/St. Mary Cemetery

The St Michael Catholic Church building is in Suring. The cemetery existed several years before the parish was formed in 1907. It was originally known in the Green Bay Diocese records as St. Mary Catholic Cemetery and is located on an isolated county hilltop surrounded by farm fields several miles west of Suring on Hwy "M". It is between Elm Road and Strawberry Lane, and just inside the western Oconto County line - Town of How. The earliest gravestones record burials in the 1890's.

Prior to 1907, Catholics in this area went to a variety of parishes which included St Mary in Shawano (Shawano County), St. Michael Church in Keshina (Menominee County), and to the St Joseph of the Lake mission church in "Little Oconto" now called South Branch, where there is also a small Catholic Cemetery (Menominee County). After the parish was given permission to form in Suring in 1907, it took charge of the cemetery, being the nearest church, and changed the name to St. Michael to "avoid confusion". Recently, the cemetery has been transfered to the care of the Diocese of Green Bay. Records are found both at the Diocese Archives and at St Michael Church in Suring.  Infomation was taken, in part, from the 50th Anniversary Book for St. Michael Catholic Church, Suring (1957).

St. Michael/St. Mary Cemetery Gravestone Transcriptions

The cemetery was originally  regional and named St Mary Catholic Cemetery.
There was no parish connected with it and early records us the St. Mary name.
The name was changed to St Michael Cemetery when the parish of St Michael was formed in nearby Suring in 1907.

The rows do not have an equal number of gravestones.
A dash (-) is placed to make the tables more easily read.
It does not stand for an unmarked gravesite.
The transcription begins in the northwest corner of the cemetery, with each successive row east of the last.
