DEADLY PISTOL DUEL
One Man Shot To Death Other Seriously Injured
Cephus B. Dalton and Price Wade "shot each other
up" on Sunday night, about ten o'clock, with the result that the
former is dead, shot clear through the body, and the latter in Union
Hospital, Elkton with a serious wound in the left arm.
There are many conflicting stories concerning the shooting, which occurred
in front of a road house between Porters Bridge and Oakwood, kept by Mrs.
May Guthrie.
The altercation appears to have arisen over Wade's wife. From the
testimony of eye witnesses both men drew their revolvers and fired at practically the same time. Dalton was shot in the. right
breast, the bullet passing entirely through his body. He got into the automobile
of A. B. Underwood, where he died while being taken to his home, death
being due to internal hemorrhage.
Wade was shot in the left arm, his " gun arm," being left
handed. The bullet entered at the elbow and came out at the shoulder. He
was taken to the hospital by some of his friends
and was in a serious condition from the loss of blood.
Sheriff Pierson, of Elkton, was summoned to the scene and made a
number of arrests, holding the parties as witnesses for the inquest held at
Elkton Tuesday night by Coroner Green. State's Attorney Joshua Clayton
conducted the examination of witnesses.
Dr. R. C. Dodson and Dr. Vernon McNnight, who had held an autopsy
over the body of Cephus B. Dalton, testified as to the nature of the wound
that caused death.
Witnesses questioned by the State's Attorney were: A. B. Underwood,
who drove the car in which Dalton died; Simpson Ayers, William Underwood,
Thomas Burnett, Webb Sutphen, Henry Underwood, Horace Stanley, John Dalton
and Mrs. Lula May Wade.
It was surprising how little some of the witnesses knew, despite the
fact that they were all on the scene. None knew of any ill feeling between
the men, and denied all knowledge of a bootlegger feud, when the State's
Attorney attempted to question along these lines.
The hearing lasted for more than two hours and when the jury was
finally given the case it was near the midnight hour when they returned a
verdict to the effect that Cephus B. Dalton came to his death by a gunshot
wound at the hands of Price Wade.
Both principals and all the witnesses are Virginians, some of them
not having lived in this section long. Cephus B. Dalton a few months ago
purchased the J. M. Sterrett farm, near Rock Springs. He leaves a wife and
three small children. His body was taken to his former home in Virginia for
burial.
Mr. J. E. Tyson took the. body of Cephas B. Dalton to Meadow Dan,
Floyd county, Virginia, for interment last week.

Find A Grave note: “Oma's name is
on her husband's stone in Carroll County Va., but she lived 48 more years
after he was murdered in Cecil Co MD. So, she was buried here, West
Nottingham Cemetery, Colora, Cecil Co., MD, near
loved ones. Info provided by Great Grandson Leonard Michael Goad.”

Not noted in original survey but is buried in a “Dalton”
Cemetery per his Death Cert & I would say that is probably
correct “Dalton Cemetery” (there are several) as
so many of his family are known to be buried here.
