In her book, "The Descendents of Hezekiah Sumner in Montgomery and Floyd Counties, Virginia," Peggy Burton Rich has found evidence that a John Sumner, age 60 who married a Rebecca Agee in Sullivan County, Tenn, may well be the same John Sumner whose wife was Mahala Lester Sumner in Floyd County, Va. The last documentation of John Sumner was in 1875 when he filed papers on behalf of his son, Giles, then under the age of 21, to obtain a divorce from his wife Dollie Ann Ellen Roop. The matter seems to have been dropped and John "disappeared" from Floyd County, Va. This same John Sumner who married Rebecca, is said to have come from Va where he left his family due to having trouble with his children, a man whose son, Eli, visited Rebecca around 1900, a man whose son, Tazewell, came to Tenn and started a family, a man who was a veteran of the Civil War. There is no documentation either in Floyd, Va or Sullivan, Tenn that John Sumner was divorced from Mahala Lester Sumner. Furthermore, Mahala had always been saying in her census accounts that she was married, but after 1900 began providing census information that she was now a widow.
