NIXON, Rex L., 92, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 1998. Mr. Nixon served on both the Electoral Board and the School Board in Floyd County for several years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior and George Nixon. He was a retired farmer and attended Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren. Surviving are his wife, Eva Carlene Nixon; daughters and sons-in-law, Loreeta N. and G. Frank Carter, Bristol, Va., Janet G. and Thomas Baca, Albuquerque, N.M., Wanda N. and James G. Rettinger, Roanoke, Lisa R. and John Newell, Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Sara B. and Jason Reeves, Rio Rancho, N.M., Stephanie Baca, New York, N. Y., Rex Carter, Sheri Carter, both of Bristol, Va., Amanda Newell, Ian Newell, Albuquerque, N.M.; great-grandchild, Kelly Reeves; sister, Ava N. Sumner, Christiansburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Pat Nixon, Salem, Gene and Evelyn Nixon, Christiansburg; sisters-in-law, Irene Nixon, Christiansburg, Ruth Nixon, Salem; several nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home.

Eva Carlene Cole Nixon, 92, of Salem, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2012, from complications of a stroke. Eva was born on November 20, 1919, to Jerry and Mae Cole and spent most of her life in Floyd County. In 1986 she retired from Floyd Nursing Home and moved to Salem. She was a member of Green Hill Church of the Brethren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rexford L. Nixon; and her siblings, Elva Martin, Archie Cole, Hester Hoback, Effie Conner, Nina Martin, Dorothy Martin and Marvin Cole. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Loreeta and Frank Carter, of Bristol, Janet and Tom Baca, of Albuquerque, N.M., Wanda and James Rettinger, of Roanoke, and Lisa and John Newell, also of Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandchildren, Sara and Jason Reeves, of Hamilton, Mont., Stephanie and Mike Schmidt, of Los Angeles, Calif., Sheri Carter, of Alexandria, Rex Carter, of Floyd, and Amanda, Ian, and Anya Newell, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; great- grandchildren, Kelly and Kevin Reeves, and Emma and Maya Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank extended family, Ann LeDe' and her wonderful staff, Dr. Michael Malpass, and Good Samaritan Hospice for the care and attention during Eva's illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad, the National Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of the donor's choice . He was a veteran having served in the US Army during WWII, and later retired from General Electric after 25 years of service. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed bowling and golfing. Preceding him in death were his parents, John Thomas Nixon, Sr. and Bertha Nixon; siblings, John Thomas Nixon, Jr, Rexford Nixon, George W. Nixon, Eugene Nixon, and Ava Sumner; and a granddaughter, Carol Renee Manuel. His surviving family includes his wife of 70 years, Rosetta (Pat) Nixon; children, Donald H. Nixon and wife, Peggy, and Joyce Manuel and husband, Carl; grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Manuel, Charles R. Heslep III, Kimberly D. Bratton and husband, Paul, and Robyn M. Mrs. Nixon retired from Leggett's with 15 years of service and enjoyed sewing. She is survived by her children, Donald H. Nixon and wife, Peggy, and Joyce Manuel and husband, Carl; grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Manuel, Charles R. Heslep III, Kimberly D. Bratton and husband, Paul, and Robyn M.
