At the age of 19, James enlisted first in 1861 in Floyd County, Virginia as a private in Company A of the 54th Regiment Virginia Infantry. He was hospitalized in 1863. Then in 1864 he was taken prisoner in Dallas, Georgia and was listed as a prisoner of war between May and October of 1864 at Rock Island, Illinois.

He joined the Northern Army when given the choice of staying in a death ridden prison or joining the Army. Like many he just wanted to live.

James wrote love letters to Rebecca Sumner during the war. In one he apologized to her for his sloppy writing "but I am writing this on another man's back."

When the war was over, James and Rebecca married in 1866 and 8 children were born in Alum Ridge, Floyd County, Virginia. After the 1880 census they decided to go West.

They went by train as far as they could and the rest of the way by covered wagon. They stopped in Kansas for a while but didn't like it so they went to Portland. The whole family except Rebecca worked on the railroad. Even the youngest, Mary, worked in the railroad office.

About 1890 they moved to Tacoma and from there to Springbrook, WA, where the Iddings have stayed ever since.

James and Rebecca bought 40 acres and built a house. They had their own cows, from which they made butter to sell. James died of Bright's Disease April 9, 1903. He left all he owned to Taylor, the only unmarried child at the time, on the condition Taylor would take care of Rebecca until she died.

The funeral of Chas. W. Iddings, who died at his home in Sunnyhill on Wednesday, January 8, was held from the Chittenden chapel Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of people.

Deceased had been a resident of Sunnyhill for the past twenty-eight years and was well known throughout the county. He was a Southerner by birth, having been born in Virginia fifty-one years ago.

Interment was made in the Kent cemetery."

According to her Washington State death record, Anna was the daughter of Joseph Baker and Mary Martin. She was the wife of Taylor Iddings.

As Anna Townsend she married William Taylor Iddings on Sept. 19, 1910 in Seattle.

Three Iddings brothers married 3 women named Anna. All the women belonged to the same church, women's group and even the same quilting group. At first when someone said "Anna Iddings" all 3 would respond. The Kent Community wasn't dumb ~~ all of the Anna's got a nickname. They took their husband's first name. Doc had always wanted to be a doctor, so he was called by that name. They became Anna Tom, Anna Taylor and finally Anna Doc.

Heart Attack Fatal To James E. Iddings Of Sunnyhill District

Funeral services for James Elliot Iddings, 68, resident of the Sunnyhill district for 53 years, were held at the Chittenden Funeral home Saturday March 20, Rev. ...(faded out) of Trinity church, Seattle, conducted the final rites. Mr. Iddings died suddenly of a heart ailment at his home on Wednesday, March 17. Interment was in the Kent Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Floyd, Virginia and resided and operated a farm in this district for over forty years and known to his many friends as "Doc."

James had always wanted to be a doctor, so he got the nickname and became a farmer.

On April 6, 1902, he was married to Anne J. Coleman in the Sunnyhill district.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. J. E. Iddings, and a son, Harry, of Kent, two brothers, Taylor and Thomas, of Route 1, Renton, and one sister, Mrs. Mary A. Lankester of Astoria, Oregon."

Lloyd E. Iddings, 71, of Hood Canal died Oct. 4, 2000, at his home.

He was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Renton to Earl and Viola (Wilson) Iddings

He married Marlene Olson on May 6, 1952, in Tacoma.

Mr. Iddings owned Iddings Farm Service in Kent from 1952 until his retirement in 1982.

He was a member of a barbershop chorus and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Earl of Maple Valley; two daughters, Linda Slates of Vashon Island and Renee Hanover of Yelm; a brother, Jim of Winthrop; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at The Inn At Gig Harbor. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

James Raymond IDDINGS February 10, 1931~September 4, 2008 James Raymond Iddings or Jimmy as many called him, was the light of our lives. He was the funniest man on earth, made everyone feel welcome and lucky to have known him. He lit up a room with his humor, his love of people and his positive attitude. He loved his family and friends deeply. Jimmy was born in Kent Washington and graduated from Kent Meridian High School in 1950. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jackie Colson Iddings I, and his son, Randy Iddings, daughter, Ronanne Riley and son-in-law Jack Riley. He was very proud of his 4 grandchildren: James Ryan Iddings 24, Erin Marie Iddings 22, John Jackson Riley 22, and James Raymond Riley 19. His dog Stuey is also wondering where he is. He was an athlete in high school, playing football and basketball and was the state champion in the high hurdles. He had an athletic scholarship to the University of Washington and was an Olympic hopeful for track. However, school was not the right path for Jimmy, and he soon joined his brother in business, forming a successful company still being run by his son Randy today. For over twenty years, he was a member of a barbershop quartet called the Ford Do Matics and together they sang all over the United States, as well as performing overseas for the US troops on a USO Tour. He spent the last 15 years in Winthop, enjoying the community, his many newfound friends and puttering on his farm. A great source of pride was his wheel line which he put together himself; he enjoyed seeing the water pumping out of it and growing this first year's crop. He radiated happiness all of his life and we will all miss him immensely. There will be two celebrations of Jim's life; Friday September 19th at the Winthrop Auditorium at 2:00 pm and Friday September 26th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at the Inn at Gig Harbor.

"FALLS UNDER WAGON WHEEL; IS KILLED

The Sunnyhill settlement was thrown into sorrow Sunday morning when Mamie, the five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Iddings, was killed by falling from a wagon. The wagon held the Iddings family and about ten other neighbors, all of whom were going to Swan Lake, a distance of two miles, for a Sunday picnic. They had not gone more than a mile from Idding's farm when the little girl started to change her position in the wagon. while she was standing, the left rear wheel sank into a hole in the road and she lost her balance, falling over the side of the wagon. Just as she went over she clutched the board on the hay rack and threw herself beneath the wheels, the rear wheel passing completely over her head before her father could stop the team.

The injured girl was carried to the home of one of the neighbors and Dr. Owen Taylor from Kent was summoned. Though the girl was breathing when he arrived, it was the doctor's opinion that she never knew what happened after the accident. She lived until 1 o'clock P.M.

Mr. Iddings told deputy coroner C. G. Chittenden, when the latter made a formal investigation, that he had a presentment when he started to hitch up that something would happen, and that his wife asked him why he was reluctant to go. He replied that he did not know at the time, but that he had a 'hunch' something would happen.

The victim is the youngest of five children."
