EARLIEST BURIAL: 12 Oct 1853 - Mary Ellen Wight

LAST BURIAL: 2000

According to History of Box Elder County, published by Daughters of Utah Pioneers in 1937, "Philip Ettlemen, great grandfather of the Mary Valentine family, was the first man buried in the Brigham City Cemetery. He is resting on a lot to the extreme southern end and about two blocks west of Main Street, as the cemetery is now platted. Mr. Ettleman had been hauling a load of timber and on the return trip was driving up Third North near Third East where the old tannery was located. He was sitting on the front of the running gears when suddenly the reach-pole broke loose from the hind gear. The motion of the wagon caused the pole to fly forward and hit the team on the back, at the same time pinning Mr. Ettleman in such a way that he was dragged to death by the runaway team. The accident occurred November 16, 1854."
