Leland H. “Sarge” Davis

Aug. 5, 1917 – Aug. 5, 1917

Leland H. “Sarge” Davis, 89, of Blessing passed away May 2, 2007.

He was born August 5, 1917 in Gunner, Texas to Joe Knox Davis and Mary Frances West Davis. He retired as Sargent in the US Air Force; was a member of the Blessing American Legion and the El Campo VFW Post.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Davis of Blessing and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2007 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Hill Winfrey officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

DAVIS, LESLIE "LES"

Leslie “Les” Davis, 88, of Bay City, died November 2, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.

He was born April 11, 1915 in Fredonia, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, to the late John and Janett Spencer Davis.

Mr. Davis was a resident of Bay City since 1945 and a member of the Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Bay City Masonic Lodge No. 865 AF & AM and was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U S. Army.

He was the former owner and operator of Les’s Welding and Repair Shop.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, David and Abbigail Davis of Bay City; step-son, Rodger Reppond of Huntsville; step-daughters, Judy Reppond of Garrison, Texas, Betty Williams of Alvin, and Margarie Cross of Anahuac; sisters, Helen Harper of Princeton, Kentucky, Louise Cline of Marion, Kentucky, and Geneive Simpkins of Nashville, Tennessee; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly knew him as Paw Paw.

Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sam Steele officiating.

Masonic graveside service will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas.

Pallbearers will be Jim Jumonville, Doug Thigpen, Randy Smith, Johnny Lowe, James Orr, and David Janssen.

DAVIS, ROY ELVIN

BAY CITY - Roy Elvin "Dick" Davis, 88, of Bay City and formerly of Blessing, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005.

He was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Mingus, to the late Oral and Essie White Davis. He was a Baptist and a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.

Survivors: sister, Marie Holsworth of Palacios; and brother, Richard Davis of Mineral Wells.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing. Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City, 979-245-4613.

Funeral services for Joseph L. Dawson Jr., 77, of Corpus Christi will be held 3 pm Thursday at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Van Vleck.

Mr. Dawson was born Aug. 24, 1912, to Joseph L. and Marie Dawson Sr. in New York City and died June 26, 1990, at Humana Hospital, Corpus Christi.

He served as a sergeant during WWII in the disbursing office at Camp Hulen, Texas for three years.  He was an employee of Central Power and Light Co. in McAllen and Edinburg for 30 years. He was also a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Corpus Christi.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Keller Dawson of Corpus Christi; a son, Joseph L. Dawson III of Houston; a daughter, Linda Dawson Fagg of Corpus Christi; a sister, Lorraine Dawson Kirchner of Edisto Beach, S.C.; and two grandsons, Spencer and Bret Fagg of Corpus Christi

Pallbearers are Dana Keller, Jack Keller, Maurice Keller, Tommy Lane, John McMillan, and Andy Williams.

In lieu of the usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3216 Reid Dr., Corpus Christi, Texas 78472.

CORPUS CHRISTI - Mary Elizabeth Keller Dawson, 86, of Corpus Christi, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005.

She was born June 23, 1919, in Bay City [Matagorda County, Texas] to the late Donald E. and Mary K. Wright Keller. She served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Survivors: daughter, Linda Dale Fagg of Corpus Christi; son, Joseph L. Dawson III of Humble; brother, Col. Jack N. Keller of San Antonio; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: husband, Joseph L. Dawson Jr.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, the Rev. Tom Morgan officiating.

DEDEK, JOSEPH

DEDEK
Graveside funeral services for Joseph Dedek, 88, were at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000 at Hawley Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Klimpel officiating.

Mr. Dedek died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 in Bay City. He was born June 4, 1911 in Liptal, Czechoslovakia to Joe F. and Marie Dedek.

Mr. Dedek came to the United States with his parents when he was nine months old. They arrived in Galveston in 1912 and then went to Ennis, Tex. to live with his mother's Uncle Luska.

He then moved to Ft. Worth a couple years later and then to Needville. He moved to Blessing in 1925 and in 1936 he lived on the 1221 Farm (Marie Dedek Estate) until Jan. 30, 1995 when he entered the hospital in Bay City. In February he was moved to Bay Villa Nursing Home.

He served in the army during WWII, where he was a prisoner of war. He was discharged in 1945.

Mr. Dedek lived in Blessing for 70 years and enjoyed farming. He especially loved his pecan trees. He made scarecrows, and put them on the trees so the crows wouldn't eat his pecans. Crows would sit on the scarecrows and he would slam a screen door and use a gun to scare them off.

Survivors include: one sister, Bessie Hemza of Hayword, Calif.; two nephews, Stanley and Larry Dedek and their families; and three nieces, Carolyn, Diane, and Susan and their families.

Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City.

DEES, KENNETH RAY, SR.

Mr. Kenneth Ray Dees, Sr., 52, of Midfield died Monday, March 13, 2000 at his residence following an extended illeness. He was born Oct. 25, 1947 in Wharton the son of Jacob Franklin and Wilhelmina Voitles Dees.

Mr. Dees has been a resident of Midfield for the past 35 years and was a truck drive working for the Genesis Crude Oil Co. and was also self-employed. He married Carolyn Woodson on Dec. 21, 1966 in Bay City. He was Christian by faith. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict and a member of the American Legion Post in Blessing.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Midfield Community Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn Dees of Midfield; daughter Kelly Lynn Leach of Needville; sons, Jack Kenneth Dees, and Kenneth Ray Dees, Jr., both of Midfield; mother, Wilhelmina Dees of Wharton; sisters, Marlene Soles of Wharton and Mary Ann Beroth of Freeport; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Curtis Dees in 1996.

DeLEON, BENNY

Benny DeLeon, 67, of Palacios, Texas passed away Thursday, August 2, 2001 in Houston, Texas.

He was born March 21, 1924 in Pleasanton, Texas to David DeLeon and Dolores Lopez DeLeon.

He was a long time resident of Palacios, a member of the Catholic Church, a retired Police Officer from the Palacios Police Department and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by: wife, Dora Longoria DeLeon of Palacios; daughters, Patricia Sanchez of Brazoria, Diana Pena of West Columbia, Mary Ellen Roecker of Lake Jackson, Lisa Halfen of Dubio, UAE, Lori Cruz of Bay City, and Karen DeLeon-Bailes of Angleton; sons, Benny Joe, David, and Robert DeLeon all of Palacios; sisters, Mary Smith of Bay City, Pauline Garcia of Katy, Mary Cascrez of Pleasanton, Sophia DeLeon of California, and Minga Garcia of Galveston; brother, Daniel DeLeon of Houston, and by 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents,David and Dolores DeLeon and by his brother Joe DeLeon.

The rosary was to be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, August 3, 2001 at the Palacios Funeral Home. Funeral services were to be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2001 at the First Baptist Church of Palacios, with the Rev. Tony Flores officiating. Interment was to follow at the Palacios Cemetery.

DENN, BILLY WILLIAM JOHN

Billy William John Denn

April 14, 1923 – Aug. 19, 2007

Billy William John Denn, 84, of Bay City passed away August 19, 2007.

He was born April 14, 1923 in Ellsworth, Wisconsin to the late Matt and Gladys Collamore Denn. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was recalled for the Korean Conflict. He served for a number of years in the Air Force Reserve retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He spent 67 years working in the family business, M. J. Denn & Son, and served on the Bay City Port Authority Board for over 24 years.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Judith Anne and Michael C. Burkle of Van Vleck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon and Gail Denn and Mike and Becky Denn all of Bay City; 3 sisters: Margaret Huddleston of Temple, Emily Lee of Bay City and Betty Cartwright of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, William M. Burkle and wife Andrea, Christopher C. Burkle, Danny Denn and wife Bobbi, Keisha Denn and Julie Denn; two great grandchildren, Lily Burkle and Tigh Michael Denn; and by a number of nieces, nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Georgena Nell Denn in 1992 and sister: Maxine Farrar.

A Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.

Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Van Vleck. His nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold Martin, Lynn Quillin, Billie Head, and Current and Former Board Members of The Port of Bay City Authority. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Edgar Hamel Dobson, 63, of Palacios, died July 15, 1976. He was born Jan. 26, 1913 in Wapanucka, Okla. He is survived in death by a daughter Clara Louise Wright of Portland, Ore., a son Richard B. Dobson of Camp Lejeune, N. C.; two sisters, Mrs. Harley Snider of Palacios and Mrs. Gertie Roberts of Corpus Christi. He was a life long resident of Matagorda County and a veteran of World War II. The funeral services will be held in the Palacios Funeral Home chapel on Sunday, July 18, 1976 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leon Maxwell officiating. The funeral will be in Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with the Palacios Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Hines Douglas, Jr., 84, of Bay City, died January 31, 2007.

He was born in Post Oak, Texas on July 29, 1922 to the late Jessie Hines and Vida Douglas. He was a resident of Bay City since 1963 and a World War II veteran of the US Army Air Force.

Jessie is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Hilda L. Douglas of Bay City; his sister, Jolene Manheimer and husband Donald of Kingsville; sons, Jessie H. Douglas, III and wife Barbara of Pasadena, Larry Douglas and wife Sandra of Bay City; daughter, Donna Jones and husband John Paul of Arlington; grandchildren, Julie Douglas of Houston, Jessica Douglas of Bay City, Troy Douglas and wife Amy of Medford, Mass., Jeremy Douglas and wife Jessica of Bay City, and Justin Douglas of Arlington. Also by his step-granddaughters, Keisha DePhong and husband Jason of Mesquite and Jamie Jones of Mesquite; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Cylus Douglas of Bay City and Savannah Jones of Mesquite.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jessie and Vida Douglas, a sister, Lura Dean Lowry, and a grandson: Bobby Gene Douglas.

Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at the Cedarvale Cemetery under the auspices of Philip H. Parker VFW Post 2438.

DOWELL, WALTER

PORT LAVACA - Walter Dowell, 82, of Port Lavaca, died Wednesday, December 21, 2005.

He was born August 8, 1923, in Cut-n-shoot, to the late Miles James and Martha Ellen Adams Dowell. He was Rice Farmer and owned Calhoun County Pest Control Company, was a Deacon at Alamo Heights Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, member of VFW Post 4403, U. S. S. Pennsylvania Survivors Reunion, and honorary life director for Calhoun County Fair.

Survivors: wife, Melba Dowell; daughters, Pam Janke of El Campo and Lori Strong of Port Lavaca; sons, Walter V. "Buddy" Dowell, Jr. of Port Lavaca, Chipper Dowell of Port Lavaca and Tommy Dowell of Snook; seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: one sister and six brothers.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Alamo Heights Baptist Church, the Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Palacios Cemetery [Matagorda County, Texas]. Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home, 361-552-2988.

DREHER, WILLIAM HIRAM "JACK"

William Hiram “Jack” Dreher, 79, of Bay City, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2002. He was born October 26, 1922, in Rockdale, Tx., to Jerome J, Dreher and Myrtle Rozell Dreher.

He was a lifelong resident of Bay City, he was a renowned and avid fisherman, a retired paint contractor, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shriners, and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Flossie Gentry Deher of Bay City; by his daughter, Denise Gentry Phillips of Houston; by his son, Robert W. Gentry of Houston; by his sisters, Vera H. Robinson of Houston, Estelle Muston, Jeraldine J. Hosek, Peggy L. Hosek, Marilin Orsak and Johnnie Sue Roberts, all of Rockdale; and by his grandsons, Ryne Genty Christesen and Preston Russell Christesen of Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Veterans’ graveside honors will be provided by P. H. Parker VFW Post 2438 of Bay City.

Pallbearers will be Charles Hahn, Chuck Hahn, Jerry West, Wayne Bruening, Pete Hale and George Clements, Jr.

PALACIOS - Earl Thomas Dunn, 79, of Palacios, died Sunday, July 17, 2005.

He was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Va., to the late George Thomas and Augusta Baethge Dunn Sr. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II.

Survivors: wife, Evelyn Ann Dunn; daughters, Lisa Kaye Dunn and Jolene Dunn Barrientos, both of Victoria; sisters, Dorothy Kirkham, Laura Huddleston, Hardie Ann Baldwin, and Gladys Baldwin; and brothers, George Dunn Jr., Eddie Dunn, and Carroll Dunn.

Preceded in death by: brother, Elmer Dunn.

DYKES, I. Z.

I. Z. Dykes, 81, of Bay City, TX passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at the Legacy. He was born December 10, 1921 in Coffee County, Georgia to the late I. Z., Sr. and Pearl Rutherford Williams Dykes. I. Z. was a resident of Bay City since 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific and was stationed in Japan with the army of occupation. In 1978 he retired as supervisor with Phillips Petroleum with 27 years of service. At the time of his death he was a self-employed farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Duffy Dykes of Bay City; and their four children and four grandchildren who knew and loved him as "Pa": Julia Dykes Stripling, her husband Darrell and her daughter Megan Ramsey of Kingwood, Vicki Dykes of Kingwood, Timothy Dykes and his daughters Taylor and Shelby of Corpus Christi, and Cindy Dykes Hussey and her son Darren of Bay City; brother: Gene Dykes of Sugar Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers: Wendall, Ivy, Glenn, Clyde and Jimmy Dykes, and Liddell and Marcell Williams; sisters: Sadie Dykes Teague and Gladys Dykes Brawner.

Graveside Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 31, 2003, at the Hawley Cemetery in Blessing with Rev. Sam Steele officiating. Military funeral honors provided by Philip H. Parker VFW Post #2438. Visitation will be at Taylor Bros. 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Thursday, and till noon Friday. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. The family wishes to thank all the doctors, nurses, staff and friends at The Legacy for their loving care and support during Pa's final months. Pa said his family and friends made his life worthwhile.
