Ex-Solon's Rites Pend

Bay City, Oct. 9.--Funeral arrangements for Judge W. C. Carpenter, 77, former member of the legislature representing Matagorda and Brazoria Counties, who was fatally injured when struck by an automobile yesterday, were pending here today. Judge Carpenter died of a fractured skull a few minutes after he was struck.

Judge Carpenter Funeral Tomorrow

The funeral of Judge W. C. Carpenter who was fatally injured when struck by an automobile early Monday morning will be held tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 10 o’clock from the Methodist Church, the pastor, Rev. E. G. Cooke, officiating.

There will be Masonic services at the cemetery. The ceremonies will be under the direction of Walker-Matchett.

Clinton H. DeWolfe & Lenner Fay DeWolfe

Lenner Fay DeWolfe

Services will be held for Lenner Fay DeWolfe, 74, of Bay City, 3 p. m. today (Tuesday) at First United Methodist Church.

Officiating at the services will be the Rev. Leoy Stanton.

DeWolfe died October 17, 1982 at Rotama Manor in Port Lavaca.

Survivors include son, Carl H. DeWolfe of Point Comfort and Dr. C. J. DeWolfe of Houston; 6 grandchildren, 3 great –grandchildren;  cousin, Opal Ahnort.

DeWolfe worked as title clerk at the County Courthouse for many years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow services at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Virgil Fetters, Earl Long, Russell Law, George Shoultz, John Paul Mielsch and Bubba Byrd.

J. P. "Pat" Dougherty

James Patrick Dougherty

Funeral services for James Patrick Dougherty of Bay City are scheduled for 10 a. m. Nov. 26 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Memorial Park.

Mr. Dougherty, 74, died at Matagorda General Hospital Nov. 24, 1983. He was born in Houston June 5, 1909.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Jo Dougherty of Bay City; three daughters, Donie Balusek of Pasadena, Dian Stille of Des Moines, Iowa, Dana Nunn of Bay City and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Frank Michalik, Jake Foltyn, Lewis Sutton, John Paul Mielsch, Jan Norris and Charles Hoodless. Honorary pallbearers will be L. W. Richers, Lee Roy Thomas, Louis Wagner, Michael Jones and Arthur Norris.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Taylor Brothers Funeral Home.

Emma Gladys Finch

Funeral services for Emma Gladys Finch, 85, of Bay City will be held 10 a. m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Chester Sassman officiating. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City.

Mrs. Finch was born Jan. 5, 1902, in Rusk County, Texas, to W. W. and Mary Elizabeth Smith Bradham and died Oct. 4, 1987, at Bay Villa Nursing Home, Bay City.

A resident of Bay City since 1937, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sammie Jarrell of Bay City; a son, Ray Finch of Kingsville; two sisters, Nina Johnson and Ida B. Howell, both of Cooper, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers include Morris Richardson, S. W “Shirley” Brown, E. S. “Shep” Graham, Phi Wilson, Walter Lowe and Raymond Johnson.

Arrangements are with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home, Bay City.

Frank J. Gaas & Betty J. Gaas

Frank J. Gaas

A funeral mass for Frank J. Gass, beloved husband and father, age 66, of Rosenberg is scheduled for 10 a. m. Friday, Dec. 12 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1416 George St., Rosenberg. Graveside services will be 2 p. m. Friday at Cedarvale Memorial Park [Cemetery] in Bay City. Pallbearers are Julius Nowak, Joe Hubenak, Jimmie Jurek, Gilbert Saha, Allen Schillings and Joe Senkyrik.

Mr. Gaas died Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Polly Ryan Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 13, 1931 in Frenstat, TX. His parents were Frank R. and Rosalie Gaas. HE served in the U. S. Army.

He also worked as a construction general contractor and was a member of the American Institute of Constructors in Houston.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and was active in K. J. T. and the Knights of Columbus No. 3070.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty J. Gaas of Rosenberg; daughter, Elizabeth Whiddon and husband, Michael, of Prairie Hill; 3 sons, Richard Gaas and wife, Lyn and Patrick Gaas and wife, Carol all of Richmond; Christopher Gaas and wife, Annette, of Sugar Land; 2 brothers, Bernard Gaas of Point Comfort and Daniel Gaas of Georgetown; 3 sisters, Bernice Kitkoski of Houston, Henrietta Harrison of San Antonio and Mary Helen Gaas of Austin; and 5 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Paul Alan Gaas, in 1968, his parents and one sister, Loretta Polasek.

Visitation begins 5 p. m. today at Garmany & Carden Funeral Chapel with the rosary being recited at 7 p. m.

BETTY JEAN MOORE GAAS

ROSENBERG - Funeral services for Betty Jean Moore Gaas of Rosenberg are set for 10 a.m. today, March 31, 2009, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Bay City Cemetery in Bay City. Visitation was 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, with a rosary service at 7 p.m., at Garmany & Carden Chapel in Rosenberg.

Betty Jean Moore Gaas passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at her home in Rosenberg on March 28, 2009.
Betty was preceded in death by her son, Paul Alan Gaas; her husband, Frank J. Gaas; and her parents, Frances Elizabeth Svetlik Moore and Dail Duke Moore.

Betty was born in Matagorda County on Nov. 27, 1933 and graduated from Bay City High School in 1951. Betty, an only child, happily married into the large Gaas clan the following year. She and Frank lived in Bay City through the birth of their five children and moved to Rosenberg in 1974. Betty was a wholehearted participant in her children's lives; she was always there, rarely missing an event, small or large. Uncompromising in her work ethic, she always encouraged and challenged her children to be their best. She remained interested and supportive of her children throughout their lives as adults. Betty was a devoted wife to Frank, and cared for him throughout his life, including his final years as he suffered through a lingering illness.

The loss of her son, Paul, at age 18 months from an acute respiratory infection, was a life-long source of profound grief. However, she found tremendous happiness and joy caring for her many grandchildren. Betty's eight grandchildren knew her as Nanny and were the recipients of her enthusiastic love. Whether it was babysitting, baking homemade treats, or attending every school play, ball game or swim meet, Nanny was happiest in her role as mother and grandmother. Her loss will be felt keenly by her grandchildren.

Betty was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay City, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg, The Catholic Daughters, and the Young at Heart Senior Group. She contributed to every bake sale she could and often commented that she liked to make sure the 'old folks' at the senior group were taken care of. She leaves behind numerous friends to mourn her loss and celebrate her exuberant spirit.

Betty loved and was loved. She is survived by four children: Elizabeth Gaas and her husband Michael Whiddon, Richard Gaas and wife Lyn, Patrick Gaas and wife Carol, and Christopher Gaas and wife Annette. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Richard Lee Gaas, Michael Francis Gaas, Rachel Carolyn Gaas, Julia Elizabeth Gaas, Emma Louise Gaas, Matthew Richard Gaas, Samuel Patrick Gaas, and Carmen Louise Gaas. Betty is also mourned by her brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard and Henrietta Harrison, Bernice Kitkoski, Bernard Gaas and wife Angeline, Mary Helen Gaas, and Daniel and Karen Gaas.

Mrs. Nora Gunter

Mrs. Nora Gunter, age 34 years 10 months and 15 days, died at the residence of her parents., Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Mosely in Newgulf, Texas, Tuesday at 2:30 p. m. Mrs. Gunter is survived by her husband, Mr. Mort Gunter, two daughters, Margarite and Ruby May; two sons, Robert and Howard Gunter, of Grayburg, Texas, mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Mosely of Newgulf, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. H. B. Wooley, Mrs. Ralph Eikenberg of Newgulf and Mrs. D. H. Neal of Boling, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 p. m. at the funeral chapel of Taylor Brothers, Rev. E. S. Brawner of the Newgulf Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Gordon J. Hardegree

Gordon Jerome Hardegree

Funeral arrangements for Gordon Jerome Hardegree, 72, of Bay City, are scheduled for 10 a. m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating and Dr. W. D. Baker assisting. Burial will be in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mr. Hardegree was born July 28, 1921 to Hiram Dean and Winnie Brandon Hardegree in Colfax and died Aug. 23, 1993 in the Diagnostic Hospital in Houston.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He also taught Sunday school and served in several capacities of the church. He was a member and past president of the Bay City Kiwanis Club and worked for many years at LeTulle and Sisk Hardware stores.

Survivors include: a wife, Esther Augsberger Hardegree of Bay City; three sisters, Hazel Dollery of Clifton; Emma Lou Caddell of Dallas and Glenda Beth Pinkerton of Tyler; 10 nieces and nephews and many friends.

Pallbearers will be Gaston Morton, Gerald Rowland, Wayne Michael, Robbins Odom, Jimmie Powers, Roger Ward, Woody Riedel and Morris Richardson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Sanders, Hollie Briscoe, Bob Pennington, Bill Correll, Gene Sandusky, Frank Baethe, deacons of First Baptist Church and the Bay City Kiwanis Club.

Services are under the direction of Dick R. Elkins, Bay City Funeral Home.

Rice Pioneer Frank A. Hurley Dead At Age 82

Frank Allen Hurley, 82, a resident of Bay City during almost its entire history, died Thursday night in his home in Bay City.

Hurley was born in Houston, and came to Bay City over 55 years ago. He was a rice grader and buyer when the industry was in its infancy in Matagorda County.

Hurley and his wife, who passed away one year ago owned and operated Hurley’s dress shop next to the Post Office for many years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bay City and served on the Selection Service Board as chairman for several years.

Hurley had been ill for several years.

He is survived by his son, Frank A. Hurley Jr., and two grandchildren, Frank and Martha Hurley, all of Bay City. Services will be at 2 p. m. Saturday in the Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. W. D. Baker of the First Baptist Church in Bay City will officiate. Burial will be at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Fay Williams Hurley

Hurley, Mrs. Fay Williams, 79, of 2112 3^rd Street, died Wednesday morning at Matagorda General Hospital. Services were set for 3 p. m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. William Baker officiating. Burial to be in Cedarvale Cemetery, under the direction of Taylor Brothers Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband, Frank A. Hurley; a son, Frank A. Hurley Jr.; one sister, Mrs. Effie Dickey, and two grandchildren, all of Bay City. Pallbearers were Dr. Shelton Breeden, Wade Ashcraft, Fred Broughton, R. B. McCullough, G. W. Davis and Charles Dickey.
