Tidehaven Independent School District is approximately 293 square miles in area. This is roughly about forty percent or two-fifths the size of the state of Rhode Island or about one-third the size of the state of Connecticut. Within its boundaries are the communities of Ashby, Blessing, Buckeye, Clemville, El Maton, Markham, and Midfield. Tidehaven High School is only a few miles from the old Tidehaven landing which was situated near the junction of State Highway 35 and FM 1095. The first plans for consolidating and creating a new school district came in the summer of 1948 when the school boards of Blessing and Markham ISD met to discuss plans to provide better educational facilities for their sparse and widely scattered Negro scholastics. Before the evening was over, the board was enthusiastically discussing plans for the consolidation of the whole area, and it was decided to submit the plan to the voters of the area. Petitions were received and elections ordered in both districts for the purpose of consolidation. On July 12, 1948, the people gave the proposal a five-to-one landslide at the polls thereby creating the new Tidehaven District taking its name from the early historic port on the Tres Palacios Creek. Tidehaven High School opened in the fall of 1950 heralding a long step forward in the educational facilities of Matagorda County. The scholastic census in 1950 was 614 persons between the age of 6 and 17. In 1986 the scholastic population was approximately 915.

The Tidehaven Schools will open the 1949-50 school year on September 5 with a general faculty meeting. Registration of students will be held on Tuesday, September 6, beginning at 9 a. m. Students of the first eight grades living in the original Markham district will attend the Markham School as it is now classed as an eight-grade elementary school. First and second grade pupils living in the Midfield area will attend the Midfield School, all others from this area, third through 12th grade, will attend the Blessing School. Pupils from Ashby, El Maton, and Blessing areas will attend in Blessing. Pupils of the four high school grades from the entire district will attend classes in Blessing until the new high school building, now under construction, is ready for occupancy. The district is known as Tidehaven Consolidated Independent School District. The new high school is to be known as Tidehaven High School, and our high school will be identified by this name during the coming school year. Although classes are to be held in the building which has, in the past, been known as Blessing High School, the high school will operate as Tidehaven High School, come September 5. Bus routes will be approximately the same as last year, with only one major change. After all buses arrive at the Markham School, one bus will make the run to Blessing for the high school students. In the afternoon this bus will deliver the high school pupils back to Markham, where they will take their respective buses for the return home. Only those children six years of age on or before the first day of September will be admitted to the first grade. This does not mean those who are six before the first day of school. The law which defines a scholastic is clear on this point. All beginners must have their birth certificates. This has been made an entrance requirement for all pupils entering the first grade. Teachers for the year are;
Markham Elementary
School: Due to the recent resignation of Miss Sybil Runnells, the first grade is vacant at the present time.
Blessing Elementary
School: O. F. Havlik will have charge of the band work in the high school and both elementary schools. The Blessing eight graders will be in the high school building and will be taught by the high school teachers.
In the high school Alfred Hansen is business manager for the district, Mrs. Laura McIntyre is assistant in the tax office and George K. Nelson is superintendent of the district.
